BEIJING, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese mainland authorities have promised ethnic minority groups in Taiwan preferential assistance in trade, tourism and other sectors to promote the island's economic and social development after the devastating Typhoon Morakot.     Minister of Commerce Chen Deming said in meeting a Taiwan delegation led by politician Kao Chin Su-mei on Thursday that the ministry would lead mainland entrepreneurs to visit the island's areas inhabited by ethnic minorities to purchase local products.     The ministry would also encourage mainland commercial distributors to buy more agricultural products from Taiwan and help the Taiwan minorities participate in trade fairs on the mainland, Chen said.     Shao Qiwei, director of China's National Tourism Administration, told the Taiwan delegation that his administration would extend existing travel routes to areas where Taiwan's ethnic minorities live.     Shao suggested that the reconstruction work in the typhoon-hit minority area should also be combined with tourism development.     He Junke, chief of the China Youth Development Foundation (CYDF), said the non-profit organization has started fund-raising for Taiwan's victims of the disaster and would like to mobilize more mainland youth to help dropout students on the island.China's Commerce Minister Chen Deming (2nd R) meets with Kao Chin Su-mei (2nd L) who heads a delegation of ethnic minorities from Taiwan province, in Beijing, Aug. 20, 2009.Kao Chin Su-mei said that she hoped the mainland authorities could increase the purchase of processed agricultural products from Taiwan, especially from the island's mountainous regions.     Currently, about 500,000 ethnic people live in Taiwan, 80 percent of whom make a living by growing and processing agricultural products.     In another meeting with the Taiwan delegation, Yang Jianqiang, Vice-Minister of the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, said his commission would encourage mainland people to visit the island and welcome Taiwan's minority students to study on the mainland.

HAVANA, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese top legislator Wu Bangguo on Thursday visited Fidel Castro, first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, in Havana, a source with the Chinese National People's Congress (NPC) confirmed.     The two leaders had a two-hour conversation in a sincere and friendly atmosphere on bilateral relations and other issues of common concern, the source added.     Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), spoke highly of the China-Cuba relationship, according to a NPC press release.     Bilateral relationship between China and Cuba is at its best time in history, Wu said, adding that China would strive to push its relations with Cuba to a new high by continuously expanding their friendly cooperation in various fields.     Castro said Cuba closely follows China's economic and social development and feels proud when China scores new achievements.     China's success is of special significance for Cuba and all the developing nations, he added.     "The Cuban people, along with the Chinese people, will continue to support each other, work closely and intensify their cooperation with the aim to maintain world peace and realize common development," the press release quoted Castro as saying.     On China's efforts to curb the global financial crisis, Wu said China is actively participating in international cooperation while striving to maintain a steady and relatively fast economic growth.     He said developing countries should have a greater representation and a bigger say in endeavor to deal with the global financial crisis and reform the global financial system.     He also urged the international community to try to minimize the damage the current crisis inflicts on the developing nations, especially on the most underdeveloped ones.     Wu arrived in Havana on Tuesday at the invitation of Ricardo Alarcon de Quesada, president of the Cuban National Assembly of People's Power (CNAPP).     Cuba is the first leg of Wu's three-nation American tour, which will also take him to the Bahamas and the United States.     China established diplomatic relations with Cuba on Sept. 28, 1960. BEIJING, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Former Chinese ambassador to Brazil Chen Duqing said Saturday China may play a significant role in Riode Janeiro's preparations for the 2016 Olympic Games.     "Compared with the other applicants, currently Rio de Janeiro still has a lot to do to improve its sports facilities and other infrastructure, which indicates a special opportunity for Chinese companies," Chen told Xinhua Saturday in an exclusive interview.     The costs of preparing for the event in 2016 are estimated at roughly 12 billion U.S. dollars. However, the event is expected to generate 250 billion.     Zhou Zhiwei, an expert in Brazil studies with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, noted that for Rio de Janeiro, traffic and infrastructure are the city's weak points.     Beating rivals Chicago, Tokyo and Madrid, Rio de Janeiro won the right to host the world's largest stage of sporting events after three failed attempts.     Rio de Janeiro's win also marks the first time that an Olympic Games will be held in South America.     Chen said as big third world countries, both China and Brazil have cooperated closely in applying for host cities, making preparations and organizing the Games in the past few years.     In 2007, China's General Administration of Sports sent teams to Brazil to draw experiences from the Pan American Games. During last year's Beijing Olympics, the Brazilian Olympic Committee and the Rio de Janeiro bid team came to China to watch the games.     Besides the Games, Rio de Janeiro, along with another seven cities, was also expected to host the 2014 World Cup, which required large investments in infrastructures in terms of sports facilities, transportation and reception, Chen said.     "Just like their Beijing friends, I believe people in Rio de Janeiro will also enjoy rich benefits brought along by the Olympic Games," he added.
