ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers were busy searching a possible survivor in a damaged building Wednesday night after they were told cries for help were heard from the building in a mudslide-hit town in northwest China.Zhang Guiquan, an army officer, told Xinhua some residents of Zhouqu County of Gansu Province heard cries from the partially-collapsed building near the Bailong River that overflowed after being blocked by mudslides.About 40 soldiers braving heavy rains and potential mudslides were detecting signs of life near the building after receiving the report from the residents, Zhang said.Hopes of finding any survivors faded as the thunderstorms battered the county seat of Zhouqu Wednesday night, nearly four days after the mudslides hit the town, leaving 1,117 people dead and 627 missing.

BEIJING, July 26 (Xinhua) -- China's centrally administered state-owned enterprises (SOEs) jointly donated over 1.42 billion yuan (212.53 million U.S. dollars) for charitable work during the first half of 2010, the state assets watchdog said Monday.The money came from 107 of the 125 central SOEs which are overseen by China's State Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC), according to a statement posted on the SASAC's website.Some 53.63 percent of the donated funds went to disaster-hit areas, including China's southwest provinces, which were hit by a once-in-a-century drought earlier this year, and Yushu Prefecture of Qinghai Province, where a devastating earthquake struck in April.China's largest coal producer, Shenhua Group, and two oil giants, PetroChina Co. and China National Offshore Oil Corp., ranked top three in the list of the most generous donors, with their donation accounting for 36.78 percent of the total.
BEIJING, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- China's central bank and banking regulatory commission have ordered the country's financial institutions to provide preferential loan policies to victims in the mudslide-hit regions of Gansu and Sichuan provinces.The minimum down payment for a home in the disaster-affected urban regions could be reduced to 10 percent while the interest rate for home loans could be cut to possibly 60 percent of the benchmark rate, the People's Bank of China, the central bank, and China Banking Regulatory Commission said in a joint statement issued over the weekend.Banks were also asked to help ease loan pressures for rural residents in the disaster-affected regions.A massive mudslide, which took place on Aug. 8 in Zhouqu County of northwest China's Gansu Province, has killed 1,248 people as of 4 p.m. Sunday, with 496 still missing. Flooding and mudslides in southwest China's Sichuan Province has left at least 13 dead and 59 missing.
BEIJING, June 21 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator, Wu Bangguo, met Monday with a delegation from the Ethiopian House of Federation, pledging closer links between the two countries on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of diplomatic ties.Meeting with the delation led by Speaker Degefi Bula, Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), described bilateral ties as an example of friendship between China and African countries.Since the two countries established diplomatic relationship 40 years ago, China and Ethiopia had seen consolidated and progressive friendly cooperation in the spirit of mutual respect and equality, said Wu.The establishment of a comprehensive cooperative partnership in 2003 set the direction for the future development of relations, said Wu.Wu said China was willing to work with Ethiopia to tap cooperative potential and boost traditional friendship.Wu said parliamentary exchanges between the two countries had played positive roles in promoting nation-to-nation relations.Wu urged the two countries to deepen cooperation between special committees and friendly groups within both parliaments in a bid to introduce new energy into China-Ethiopia ties.Degefi expressed his appreciation for China's assistance to African countries, including Ethiopia, saying the Ethiopian government and parliament highly valued relations with China and would learn from China in its economic development, technological progress and national unity.Ethiopia would make joint efforts with China to enhance cooperation in areas like agriculture, science and technology, and infrastructure, said Degefi.
