TOKYO, June 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said here on Tuesday both China and Japan should take the road of peaceful development. The peoples of the two countries should promote mutual understanding, trust and cooperation between them, Wen said in an interview with the Japanese public broadcaster NHK."Japan's pacifist constitution adopted after World War II stipulates that Japan should follow the road of peaceful development, which has brought tangible benefits to Japan in terms of rapid economic growth and greatly improved standards of living for the Japanese people," Wen said.Speaking of China's tremendous social and economic progress since the adoption of the reform and opening-up policy more than 30 year ago, he said China will stick to the path of peaceful and harmonious development."Both China and Japan should take the road of peaceful development. Therefore, both the Chinese and Japanese peoples should understand and trust each other and cooperate with each other," he said. The reason why China attaches so much importance to taking history as a mirror and looking into the future is by no means intended to perpetuate hatred, but to promote the feelings and friendship between the two peoples and to prevent a repeat of the past tragedy, Wen said.He called on the leaders, news media and the academic circles of both countries to play their part in facilitating the exchange of thoughts and the friendship between the two peoples and promote their mutual understanding.
ZHENGZHOU, May 29 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Indian President Pratibha Patil on Saturday visited an ancient Buddhist temple in central China that is believed to be the starting point for Buddhism's spread from India into China.Patil toured the White Horse Temple in Luoyang City, Henan Province, accompanied by the temple's abbot Shi Yinle, and inaugurated an Indian-style Buddhist hall as a gift to China.A Han Dynasty (206 BC-220 AD) emperor ordered the construction of the temple in honor of two Indian monks and horses that carried Buddhist scriptures and Buddha statues from India to the then capital Luoyang in 67 AD.During Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's visit to India in 2005, the two countries agreed to build the Indian-style hall in the temple to commemorate the long history of bilateral ties. The 3,450-sq-m hall was funded by the Indian government and constructed by the Chinese side, the first of its kind outside of India.Wang Zhizhen, vice chairwoman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the country's top political advisory body, also attended the inauguration ceremony.Following the visit, Patil left Henan for the ongoing World Expo in Shanghai, the last leg of her week-long state visit to China.During her visit, the two sides agreed to boost cultural exchange and people-to-people contact.

BEIJING, April 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu Thursday urged authorities to make provision of drinking water for people in drought-hit southwest China a top priority.Hui's call followed arrangements for combating the expanding drought laid out at a State Council, or Cabinet, meeting in Beijing."As the drought in southwest China continues, our fight against the disaster and the relief work remain onerous," he said."We must do everything we can to get water by taking measures such as artificial precipitation, digging wells and finding new water sources," he said.He also asked officials to invest more in building water conservancy facilities to solve the "bottleneck problems" of agricultural production. As of Tuesday, the expanding severe drought had left 24.25 million people and 15.84 million farm animals short of water, Vice Minister of Water Resources Liu Ning said Wednesday. The drought started in September last year in southwest China, with Yunnan Province being the worst affected region. Ocassional rainfall in these areas has done little to alleviate it.
