SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - People looking for some extra cash on hand during the coronavirus pandemic are turning to pawn shops as one way to make ends meet.Moris Adato, the owner of CashCo Pawn, says business for pawn loans started to pick up near the end of April when people needed extra money for mortgage and rent payments."It's getting crazy right now," Adato says.Pawn shop owners say their loans can help people make ends meet as they wait for things like EDD payments or stimulus checks or search for a new job. When someone pawns an item, the shop owner gives them a loan against the item's cash value. People typically have 4-6 months to pay it back, with interest. Once the loan is repaid, the item is returned to the owner. If someone can't, or chooses not to repay the loan, the item then belongs to the store and can be sold. There's no penalty for forfeiting the item, and it will not affect your credit score. Many stores, like Adato's, will allow people to extend their loans if they ask.Adato says his most common item is jewelry."Jewelry in itself is something to wear and to look good, but it's a commodity," he says. "It's gold, silver, or diamonds. If things go wrong, this is how you get out of trouble."Experts say there are a few things people need to know before deciding to pawn a possession.First, make sure the store you go to is accredited with a state or national pawnbrokers association. That will ensure they follow all the laws and regulations of the business.Second, ask about the terms of the loan, especially the interest. California law caps the interest on a pawn loan at 3% per month.Third, make sure you understand all of the extra costs, including storage and set up fees.Despite the spike in demand, Adato says about 90% of the people who come in for loans pay them back and reclaim their items. His store is offering zero-interest on any loan paid in full within 30 days. He's also promoting safety by doing as much business as possible through his website and app.Adato says it's a small way he can help people get by during the pandemic. "There are still people out there that need money, unfortunately," says Adato. "These are blue-collar, working, hard class citizens that just need groceries to get through this hard time." 2270

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — North Park residents will celebrate this holiday season with an annual tradition intact — at least for one more year. For 56 years, the Toyland Parade has delighted crowds in North Park during the holiday season. But much like a parade balloon, financial troubles have loomed over organizers.Last year, the parade was briefly canceled after former-host Victoria House Corporation said it had lost support from sponsors. Then in March 2019, the community learned that a Victoria House Corporation organizer was accused of fraud and pocketing 2018 parade donations and fees after the cancellation.RELATED:North park donut shop defends homeless manSan Diego deputies share tips to protect your presents10 special holiday events coming to San DiegoNorth Park Main Street (NPMS), a volunteer-based non-profit, pledged ,000 to the parade. That donation and monetary support from the community helped 2018's parade continue as planned. NPMS has since taken the parade over, as well. But the parade is once again in trouble. Angela Landsberg, executive director with North Park Main Street, says support from the local Lions Club has saved 2019's parade, but 2020 is a different story."Our presenting sponsor North Park Lions Club have ensured that it's going to go off this year, but if we don't raise enough money this year to get us carried through our planning for next year, because these things take a long time to plan, then this will be the final year," Landsberg told 10News. The organization is asking for the community to once again step in to make sure the parade steps off on University Avenue next year. Donations are being accepted on the NPMS website here. The Toyland Parade will start at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8, rain or shine. 1766

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Oak Valley Middle School 7th Grader, Madhumita Narayan, says she spends up to 2 hours per day practicing for the upcoming County-Wide Spelling Bee.Her secret? Google."I just search for hard spelling word lists and try to memorize a bunch of words," she says.Words like "translucent," which she spelled correctly to win the school bee earlier this year.RELATED: Scripps National Spelling Bee regional challenge held at Liberty StationNow, she'll compete against dozens of other students from around the county for a chance to go to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington DC.Narayan admits she's nervous."I'll probably get even more nervous than I already am. A lot of them probably do study more than I do," she says.RELATED: Test your spelling skillsHer Humanities teacher disagrees. Dusty Posey has run the bee at Oak Valley for 4 years. She says Narayan is one of the best the school has sent to the county bee."She was very calm and collected," says Posey. "The biggest key is to go slowly and not worry about time and just think about it, spell it out in your head and visualize it. You can tell she was doing that. And she seemed to be very confident up there."Narayan says her love of spelling came from a childhood spent reading and writing. She won her first bee in 4th grade.RELATED: John Oliver is a spelling bee superfan"I really enjoy learning new words and their definitions and how to spell them," she says. "When I'm reading any books, I try and go through the words I don't know, and learn their spellings and definitions and their origins." 1628

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - President Donald Trump started a five-day treatment of Remdesivir Friday, according to Navy Commander Dr. Sean Conley.Gilead Sciences is a California-based company, with offices in Oceanside, making the experimental drug Remdesivir. That drug saved San Diegan Troy Kahle's life and has saved others."I did survive and I did have the five-day treatment," Kahle said. He went to the hospital March 24 and shortly after went into a medically induced coma.RELATED: Medical expert explains President Trump's COVID-19 treatment RemdesivirHe received his first dose of Remdesivir around March 30 and was released from the hospital April 10, almost six months ago. "I feel like I'm back 85% which is fantastic," said Kahle. The drug does help patients in certain circumstances, according to doctors.Dr. Christian Ramers, Chief of Population Health at Family Health Centers San Diego, said Remdesivir slows down the production of the virus. He said new information created by a supercharged immune system. He said the virus triggers the immune system to respond with force, creating damaging inflammation. Ramers said that's why the president and other patients are taking a cocktail of medications to battle the viral spread and inflammation. That inflammation leaves scarring in the lungs and lasting effects."If I over exert myself I have an asthma attack, with the wheezing and I've never had asthma before," Kahle said.He hopes by sharing his story to prevent at least one person from suffering the way he has."Please take it seriously, wear a mask, socially distance wash your hands use hand sanitizer. The only way we're going to get around, or on the other side of this global pandemic is if we all work together." 1738
