BRUSSELS, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- China expected an early resumption of the six-party talks to ease tensions and resolve the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said here on Tuesday. All parties should make joint efforts to ease tensions between the south and the north on the peninsula and strive to resume the six-party talks at an early date, said Wen while meeting South Korean President Lee Myung-bak on the sidelines of the eighth Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Summit in Brussels."This is in the fundamental interests of all parties involved and is conducive to peace and stability in the region," he said. The six-party talks, a multilateral mechanism designed to peacefully denuclearize the Korean Peninsula, were launched in 2003. The talks involve China, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), Japan, South Korea, Russia and the United States.Speaking of the upcoming Group of 20 (G20) Seoul Summit, slated for Nov. 11-12, Wen said it was of great significance for boosting the world economic recovery, adding that China would support South Korea in seeking positive outcomes at the meeting.Wen said China regards South Korea as a friendly neighbor and an important partner. It also cherished the hard-won mutual understanding and trust between the two countries, believing the bilateral ties could withstand tests and continue to develop.China would also work with South Korea to boost cooperation in East Asia, Wen added.Lee appreciated China's support for Seoul G20 summit, saying his country would keep working with China to improve bilateral ties and play an active role in safeguarding peace and stability as well as deepening cooperation within the region.

BEIJING, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislature held an inquiry Friday into the government's report on grain safety in an effort to improve the legislative supervisory role.Entrusted by the State Council, or China's Cabinet, senior officials from nine government agencies, such as the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), attended the inquiry to answer questions raised by lawmakers at a bimonthly session of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), the country's top legislature.Such inquiries are believed to be a concrete and important step for the top legislature to exercise and improve supervision of the government.Zhang Ping, minister in charge of China's top economic planning body, the NDRC, issued the report on the country's grain safety on Thursday and lawmakers began to deliberate and make inquiries on the report on Friday. This is the second inquiry held by the top legislature this year. In its June session, lawmakers held an inquiry into the central government's final accounting for 2009.INTENSE Q&A SESSIONThe NPC Standing Committee's vice chairwoman, Oyunqemag, and 21 other lawmakers peppered government officials with more than 20 questions at the inquiry.Responding to a question on the impact of frequent natural disasters including drought, freezing weather and floods on this year's harvest, Vice Agriculture Minister Chen Xiaohua admitted that grain production has been negatively impacted.Chen, however, said because the central authority introduced preferential policies in a timely manner, the grain crops harvested in the summer maintained the same level as in previous years, though the harvest of early rice dropped a bit.He also said he was optimistic about the harvest in autumn, which accounts for more than 70 percent of the country's grain output because the seeded area has been increased and the growth of the crops was good at present.

BEIJING, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- China on Wednesday rejected reports of the presence of over 11,000 Chinese troops in northern Pakistan, saying that such "groundless reports" were made with "ulterior motives.""We believe the attempts of some people to fabricate stories to provoke China-Pakistan or China-India relations are doomed to fail," said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Jiang Yu in a statement. The comment came in response to recent reports of some American and Indian press that China had deployed more than 10,000 troops in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan.

BEIJING, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- China's week-long National Day holiday took in 280 million yuan (42 million U.S. dollars) in film box office receipts, up 12 percent over last year, said sources in the cinema industry.Half of all ticket sales were for "Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame," a film that debuted on Sept. 29, starring renowned Hong Kong actor Andy Lau and actress Carina Lau, along with mainland actress Li Bingbing.Director John Woo's new film, "Reign of Assassins," had sales of 30 million yuan during the golden week, which critics say was "ordinary" in box office performance but a "good film." Woo is known internationally for his 2000 film "Mission: Impossible II."The Leonardo DiCaprio film "Inception" continues its climb and took in 50 million between Oct. 1 and 7, making it the fourth foreign film ever to take in more than 400 million yuan in the Chinese mainland's box office. The other three were "Avatar," "2012" and "Transformers."Liu Hui, deputy general manager of Beijing-based UME Huaxing Cinema, is very pleased that "theatres are always packed with audiences during the golden week."
