ROCKVILLE, Md. — It’s been a long, empty year at many schools across the country and for those who work there.“It has been one of the most watershed year in my 30-some years of education that I've ever seen,” said Karin Tulchinsky Cohen, an assistant principal at Beall Elementary School in Montgomery County, Maryland. Montgomery County is home to the largest school district in the state. The more than 11,000 teachers in the district, like many all over the world, face tough challenges brought on by virtual learning.“Their stress levels have been very, very high,” she said.Recognizing that, the school district partnered with Kaiser Permanente for “RISE,” which stands for “Resilience In School Environments,” part of their Thriving Schools program to offer more programs and resources to help teachers improve their own mental health and coping abilities.“The effort of just having to overdo it on the screen so that your students can stay engaged, one, and continue to learn. I mean, they've just had to grow their repertoire so much,” said Erin VanLuven, a licensed clinical social worker at Kaiser Permanente.Some of what they do also involves yoga and virtual dance parties.“People that can regulate their own emotions when crisis comes into their life, you know, they are much more able to be effective and efficient and they're much more likely to bounce back,” VanLuven said.Among VanLuven's three main suggestions to strengthen mental health are the following:Make sure to give yourself a “bio-break,” which includes deep breathing or even stretching for a few minutesTry to eat at least two healthy meals a day that include fruits and vegetables, because that impacts your overall health, including mental healthTake up a hobby you enjoy and do it“Everybody should be taking care of their emotional wellness, and it doesn't really take much more than 10 to 30 minutes a day,” VanLuven said.For educators, the advice and camaraderie with fellow teachers have helped. RICHMOND HEIGHTS, Mo. – Authorities are searching for a person of interest following a shooting at a St. Louis area mall that left one person dead and another injured Wednesday.The St. Louis County Police Department said on Twitter that the two people were shot at the St. Louis Galleria Mall in Richmond Heights shortly before 12:34 p.m. CT.When officers arrived at the scene, police say they located the adult male victims. One victim, a man in his early 20s, was pronounced deceased at the scene and the other was transported to an area hospital for life-saving treatment.The department said it does not consider the shooting an active shooter incident.Police believe two groups of people got into some sort of dispute inside the mall and the altercation escalated into a shooting. SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California police say a man brandished what they later learned was a fake gun during a standoff that resulted in the evacuation of a hotel. The Sacramento Bee reported guests were evacuated from a Comfort Inn in Red Bluff early Saturday during a standoff between police and a domestic violence suspect. The Red Bluff Police Department said in a release that 21-year-old Christian Sandoval-Perez of Corning faces multiple charges including child abuse and domestic violence. (AP) -- Inmates in California prisons would be housed by their gender identity according to a bill moving through the state Legislature.The California Senate voted 29-7 on Thursday to require the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation to ask inmates their gender identity and to put them in prisons designed for that gender. The only exception would be if the department believed it would pose a significant security risk.The bill would require the department to refer to inmates by their preferred gender pronoun.Bill author Sen. Scott Wiener, a San Francisco Democrat, says transgender women put in prisons with men are often assaulted and raped and put in isolation for their safety.The bill now heads to the state Assembly. 771
