SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An executive order signed by President Trump Wednesday may help San Diego's military spouses find work. The executive order is aimed at increasing opportunities for military spouses to obtain federal jobs.The order encourages agencies to increase use of the noncompetitive hiring authority for military spouses.For military spouses, the unemployment rate is 16 percent which is four times higher than the national average for female adults. Among military spouses who do have jobs, 14 percent have part-time jobs and half of those spouses want full-time work.Many spouses of military members choose careers like teaching, nursing or law, but such jobs often have state-specific licenses that make it difficult to move from state to state.“Right now I’m looking at leaving my career because the exams and licensing costs are phenomenal never mind how poorly the education system is run; right from resources to teacher pay,” Sheryl Ogle said in a Facebook comment.According to an impact study conducted by the San Diego Military Advisory Council, there are more than 100,000 active-duty military members in San Diego. The service members are split fairly evenly between the Navy and Marines.In a phone call Wednesday morning, a White House official says the new order directs agencies to make an existing non-competitive hiring authority provision for military spouses available in their job announcements, according to Military.com. The hiring authority allows military spouses to be appointed to certain jobs without having to go through the usual hiring process.According to dosomething.org, military spouses tend to be under 35 and are mostly women with only five percent of military spouses being men.Data also shows that military families relocate 10 times more often than civilian families, moving an average of every two to three years. 1886

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Airports across the nation saw more than 6 million travelers Thanksgiving weekend, concerning medical professionals.Dr. Davey Smith, Chief of Infectious Diseases at UC San Diego, is worried those who gathered with people outside their household will contract the coronavirus."The infection will go on to spread to their household members, other people they work with, etc., so we'll see more cases on top of more cases," Smith said.San Diego has been in the middle of a surge, with climbing coronavirus cases steeper than we saw in July. Smith said Thanksgiving gatherings could bring a spike on top of it all."It gets actually a little bit worse, so heading into Christmas, we can start seeing our cases rise, and Christmas is an even longer holiday with more opportunities for gathering and if they're not going to be socially distancing I can just see how this piles on," Smith said.Just up the freeway, Los Angeles will see more restrictions Monday, limiting retail capacities, closing playgrounds and prohibiting any gatherings with those outside your household."They might be telling us what's going to happen to us soon. I hope that's not the case, but I do worry they are the canary in the coal mine," he said.The density of cases makes it even more important to take precautions like wearing a mask, washing your hands and keeping your distance. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An hours-long standoff between San Diego Police and a burglary suspect ended late Thursday night in the Marina area.The standoff, which started at about 4:30 p.m., occurred in the area of West Harbor Dr., between Kettner Blvd. and Pacific Highway. Police called Emergency Negotiation Team and SWAT officers, and a Psychiatric Emergency Response Team to the scene. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A strong 7.1 magnitude earthquake shook Ridgecrest Friday night, a day after a 6.4 quake rattled the same area of Southern California.Friday's tremor happened at 8:19 p.m. and was centered 11 miles outside the high desert town. It was felt throughout southern California and as far east as Las Vegas. The quake was described as a rolling motion that seemed to last at least a half-minute.No deaths are reported as a result of the violent earthquake, according to Kern County Fire Department Chief David Witt. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A shipment from Mexico containing over 200 non-FDA approved COVID-19 test kits was seized at San Diego International Airport, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials announced Wednesday.CBP officials said the shipment of two packages arrived at the airport on Dec. 1 from a flight out of Mexico. In a news release, officials said the shipment was manifested as “plastic card” and then taken for inspection.Officers found 251 COVID-19 test kits inside the packages, and they were then evaluated by FDA officials.An inspection by the FDA found the kits were misbranded, and the shipment “did not have an FDA Emergency Use Authorization and violated the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act.”The kits, with a domestic value of ,000, were seized by CBP officers, with Homeland Security notified of the shipment.CBP San Diego Director of Field Operations Anne Maricich said, “I am proud of how vigilant our officers are when it comes to protecting our communities, they stopped the entry of unauthorized, unproven and potentially unsafe goods into the United States.
