SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It's survival of the fittest once again for gyms and fitness centers across the county as San Diego braces for stricter pandemic-related restrictions that go into effect Saturday.One gym preparing for the big shift is major chain 24 Hour Fitness. While members can't choose from their dozens of locations to workout, seven county locations will be open and offering outdoor equipment to members."We're committed to staying outdoors, staying safe, and the well-being of our members is the priority," said 24 Hour Fitness district manager John Amato.Amato told ABC 10News that member visits will be reservation based with 90-minute windows, minimized to 57 guests at a time.While many prepared for what's to come, others like gym owner Tom Green of Green Speed Training in Eastlake did the opposite. Instead of expanding his outdoor space for members, he doubled the square footage on the inside, even though guests won't be allowed to workout indoors until the county falls in a less restrictive tier."It's certainly risky, but I've always been kind of a risk taker and I go with my gut instinct, and if I feel good about it, I go for it," Green said.Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, Green said support from the Eastlake community along with members of his gym have helped keep things afloat and allowed him to upgrade indoor space."It's very supportive, and we have a lot of great clients who really support what we're doing,” said Green.Regardless, both gyms said they'll continue to be there for their clients no matter which tier San Diego slips into next."To get that one-hour workout in, and de-stress to stay healthy, that's what our goal is,” said Amato. 1691

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Mayor Kevin Faulconer, County Supervisor Ron Roberts and county health officials announced Tuesday a plan of "Vaccination, Sanitation & Education" to stop San Diego's hepatitis A outbreak."This is our community and we are working day and night to take care of it. It is going to require a sustained effort and everyone in San Diego County has a role to play," Mayor Faulconer said. The county's top medical professionals say there is no end in sight to the outbreak that began in March. RELATED: San Diego Hepatitis A death toll, those sickened rises"This outbreak could last another six months and unfortunately there are going to be more lives that are going to be at risk," said Dr. Nick Yphantides, the county's chief medical examiner at a news conference outside the county administration building. Officials gave critical updates about the outbreak, which has killed 16 people and sickened 444 others. While most of the cases involved the homeless or drug users, 25 percent of the patients were neither, health officials said.Hepatitis A is a highly contagious liver infection that is usually transmitted by fecal-oral or person-to-person contact, or consumption of contaminated food or water. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- In three weeks San Diego County will elect its next district attorney,  and in a recent poll a large number of voters indicated that they're still undecided. The results of our scientific 10News Union-Tribune poll shows the battle between Summer Stephan and challenger Genevieve Jones-Wright is wide open. If the election were held today, Summer Stephan would get 35 percent of the vote. Genevieve Jones-Wright would get 22 percent and 43 percent of those polled said they are undecided. "Those polls are consistent with what our campaign research shows," Jones-Wright told 10News. "We knew we were up against a political machine and it really is no surprise to me that she's up on the polls."Progressive candidate Jones-Wright says Stephan got a head start, by being appointed to the district attorney job when Bonnie Dumanis left. Jones-Wright said she thinks the poll shows her campaign is gaining steam.Stephan was encouraged by the poll numbers. "This is very encouraging, what you're telling me, because it shows that what we're doing is working," she told 10News. "That San Diegans are enjoying that we're one of the safest urban regions in the country and that they really prefer experience over an experiment."The poll shows that Stephan's voter base is republican, white and over the age of 35. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Maritime Museum of San Diego will reopen to the public on Aug. 22, with new precautions for visitors and limited capacity.Museum officials say they have placed 6-foot markers on the upper decks of ships to remind visitors to practice social distancing while visiting. Capacity for the museum has also been cut to 25%, but staff will monitor levels every 15 minutes.Guests and staff will undergo temperature checks and wellness screenings before entering the museum, and facial coverings will be required. The museum is also condensing its hours to 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.Due to the high touch potential, the museum's gift shop is temporarily closed. Museum staff will be cleaning and sanitizing surfaces throughout the day.The museum's tours will be self-guided, but volunteers will be available through the museum to help guests."We wanted to offer a special treat for visitors and residents of San Diego during the stress of the global pandemic," Raymond Ashley, president and CEO of the Maritime Museum of San Diego, said. "So, a stroll aboard the decks of these historic ships and refreshing, educational boat ride in San Diego Bay could be the perfect break.The museum will offer outdoor activities, such as self-guided tours, of the museum's fleet of historic vessels.
