More than 100 people are believed dead Friday after a Cubana de Aviacion Boeing 737-200 crashed on takeoff from Havana's Jose Marti International Airport, according to Cuba's state-run media.Three female passengers were in critical condition after surviving the crash into thick vegetation just miles from the runway, the state-run newspaper Granma reported.Flight DMJ 0972, with at least 104 people on board, was headed to the eastern Cuban city of Holguin when it plummeted into in an agricultural area in the Santiago de las Vegas neighborhood at 12:08 p.m., according to Granma.Orestes Bentancour, who lives near the crash site, told CNN that he was drawn out of his home by the "enormous noise" the plane made on takeoff. He said the plane appeared to swerve to one side and revved its engines before crashing.Five crew members on board were Mexican nationals, according to Mexico's Civil Aviation Authority. The nearly 30-year-old Boeing 737-200 was owned by the Mexican airline Damojh and leased to Cubana de Aviacion, the Civil Aviation Authority said in a statement. The charter flight "suffered a failure" and crashed about six miles from the airport.Search and rescue personnel descended on the area -- with some residents helping -- as firefighters tried to extinguish the flames, according to photos and video from the scene. The Granma report included a photo from an airport terminal of a towering plume of black smoke rising in the distance.A large fireball followed by a plume of smoke was visible near the airport on the outskirts of Havana, according to witnesses.Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel was at the scene of the accident, the newspaper reported.Diaz-Canel later offered his condolences to the victims' families and told reporters the cause of the crash was under investigation. The fire at the crash site had been extinguished and no one on the ground was injured, he said.Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto offered his condolences via Twitter.Holguin is more than 700 km (about 435 miles) east of the Cuban capital. Cuban state media originally reported the flight was bound for Guyana.Cubana de Aviacion -- the national carrier -- has had to ground some of its aging fleet because of safety issues, though the cause of Friday's crash is unknown. In November 2010, a domestic passenger plane with 61 passengers and 7 crew members crashed in central Cuba, according to state media. The Aerocaribbean flight, carrying 28 foreign passengers and 40 Cubans, was traveling from the eastern province of Santiago de Cuba to Havana.The-CNN-Wire 2570

NATIONAL CITY, Calif., (KGTV)-- Residents and business owners in the South Bay are bracing for another round of floods. They have already seen flooding on 18th Street in National City this week, caused by the king tides. Now with the rain, many expect it to be worse. According to FEMA, businesses near West 18th Street and Roosevelt Ave. are right in a low-elevation flood zone. Ocean water travels from the San Diego Bay, up the Sweetwater Channel, and into Paradise Creek. That creek backs right into Jose's Auto Electric yard. Wednesday morning, the city shut down the road because of flooded streets caused by King Tides. During the day, luckily, the water receded before reaching the front door at Jose's Auto Electric. Check 10News Pinpoint Weather The combination of rain and king tides reminded employee Alma Ramirez of last year's disaster. She remembered 30 inches of rainwater gushing into her office and destroying her equipment. "We lost a lot of stuff, and I remembered that I forgot my purse," Ramirez said. "I said, 'Oh my purse!' And I tried to come back, but in less than five minutes, the water was already up. And I said 'Forget about it, just let me get out of here.'"If the flooding gets worse, Ramirez said she may have to move all of the low profile cars in their shop to another location to avoid flood damage for their customers.Meanwhile, neighboring businesses closer to Paradise Creek have already put up sandbags to protect their front office doors and garages. Ramirez hopes it does not get to that point for her shop. The National Weather Services estimates the Flash Flood Watch to continue through 10 p.m. Thursday. A Beach Hazard Statement is in effect until 7 p.m. Friday. 1718

More than 3,600 coronavirus-related deaths were reported in the United States on Wednesday, topping all previous days during the pandemic, which has killed more than 300,000 Americans since March, according to Johns Hopkins University data.Wednesday also saw a record 247,000 new cases of the COVID-19, a sign that the spread of the virus shows no signs of slowing.Wednesday’s figures mark the third time that US deaths topped 3,000 in a single day with two previous instances coming last week. Generally, mid-week death figures have marked the highest numbers due to how states report deaths. All told, a seven-day average of coronavirus deaths indicates that there are nearly 2,500-related coronavirus-related deaths per day. While much has been made of death figures, a death is only counted if COVID-19 was a factor in the person’s death. If someone dies from an unrelated ailment, but is coronavirus positive at the time of death, their death is not counted in official tallies, per CDC guidelines.Deaths related to the coronavirus have risen sharply in recent weeks. Here is a weekly breakdown of coronavirus related deaths in the last eight weeks, according to stats compiled by the COVID Tracking Project:December 10-16: 17,381 (Avg: 2,483)December 3-9: 16,187 (Avg: 2,312)November 26-December 2: 11,198 (Avg: 1,600)November 19-25: 11,624 (Avg: 1,660)November 12-18: 7,528 (Avg: 1,075)November 5-11: 7,490 (Avg: 1,070)October 29-November 4: 6,495 (Avg: 927)October 22-28: 5,724 (Avg: 818)The despair of the virus has hit in the central US, especially the Dakotas. According to the CDC, South Dakota has the highest death per capita rate in the US with 2.4 coronavirus-related deaths per 100,000 people in the last week. Since the start of the pandemic, 1,261 deaths have been reported in South Dakota. There has also been a marked rise in coronavirus-related hospitalizations. According to the COVID Tracking Project, there are more than 113,000 Americans in the hospital with the virus. That figure has doubled in the last five weeks, and more than tripled from late September and early October, when hospitalizations had recovered from a summer surge throughout the south. 2187
