(KGTV) -- Police and fire crews responded to the scene of several small brush fires in La Mesa Wednesday night.The fires broke out near several homes along Interstate 8 at Severin Drive near Briercrest Park. (KGTV) - Target representatives were on UC San Diego's campus this week talking to students about what they would like at an on-campus store.The company already has at least a dozen small-format stores on college campuses, including USC, UC Irvine, and UC Berkeley. Target says the stores cater to student's unique needs, providing food, apparel, dorm decor and essentials like toothpaste and body wash. While discussions are underway there is no concrete plan for Target to set up shop at UCSD. 530

But you need to know, predators are using social media apps too.It's the dark side of Las Vegas. And sex traffickers have learned they can reach beyond runaway teens into the bedrooms of kids in cities such as Summerlin and Anthem. And they're accessing your kids on social media. Adia Lancaster is with New Hope Foundation International, an organization that educates our community about sex trafficking. "We have two lives now. An offline life and an online life. Whatever app has social capability, they are recruiting off of these apps."Parents never think something like this can happen to their teen. But predators are patient and smart.  Often they will target multiple students at a specific school at the same time. If they can interact with enough students online, other teens are more likely to think they are safe because they have friends in common. That's all it takes for your teen to let down their guard on social media.Worldwide, the average age of a girl pulled into sex trafficking is 12 or 13. Here in Las Vegas, the average age is about 15 or 16.  That's the age Michelle Balan's daughter was when a stranger made friends with her on social media."It was, there is a party let's go. The girls would go. A group of guys would go. They hang out. It became a friendship. Then it evolved. These guys said, 'We want to make some money'."Sadly, Michelle's daughter was fooled into thinking it was no big deal to sell her body. But since she was still living at home, it didn't take long for Mom to catch on."She started coming home with items I didn't pay for and she didn't have a job. LAKELAND, Fla. — A 90-year-old man dressed in full protective gear so he could say his final goodbyes to his wife of nearly 30 years.Sam Reck had been separated from his wife, JoAnn Reck, during the pandemic after the state placed a ban on visitors at nursing homes.He was reunited with his wife at a hospital in the Tampa area shortly before she died of COVID-19."Here's this 90-year-old man, he did risk his life to go see my mom, but that was his choice, that's his freedom to do that. He knew what he was risking," said Scott Hooper.Scott Hooper also dressed in personal protective gear so he could say goodbye to his 86-year-old mother. His family recorded the moments his stepdad said goodbye to their mom."It was my wife who recorded the video and I remember everyone in the room was crying. I remember looking at my wife, she was crying so hard, she could barely hold the camera. It was a very emotional moment," said Hooper.Hooper said his mother lived in a skilled nursing area. His stepdad lived in a nearby apartment. The couple was known as "Romeo and Juliet."The two would schedule distant visits during the pandemic after the state stopped visitors from coming into nursing homes.Sam would sit outside his second-floor apartment balcony then JoAnn would talk to him from a garden below.Hooper says his mother contracted COVID-19 last week and developed a fever, cough and fatigue."COVID was hitting her so hard and so fast," he said.Hooper said doctors said they could put his mother on a ventilator, but it would be a very painful procedure and her quality of life could be worse than before.JoAnn was diagnosed with dementia about a year ago."Anyone who has dealt with it knows what I am talking about because they don't always remember you or know the situation they're in or they think something weird is happening and you try to tell them it's not," said Hooper."It was the hardest decision, we ever made. We talked about it for a long time, but we decided to go to palliative care."JoAnn raised three children, including a daughter who died before her. She leaves behind grandchildren and great-grandchildren."She was a very giving person. LAGUNA BEACH, Calif. (AP) — A body was recovered in the ocean off a Southern California beach in the same area where a person was found dead in the water a week earlier. A search was launched Friday following reports of a missing swimmer in the Table Rock area of Laguna Beach. It wasn’t immediately known if the person found dead on Saturday is the swimmer reported missing the previous day. It’s the third death along Orange County’s coastline in the past week. A 25-year-old man was found dead in the surf off Huntington Beach on Aug. 25. 549
