SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Teachers across the U.S. are working to diversify the books in their classroom libraries, according to Harvard University and Collaborative Classrooms."It’s been more than 50 years since literacy experts first stressed the need for more diverse books in the classroom, and yet reading lists look surprisingly the same as they did in 1970," an excerpt from Harvard Ed Magazine reads.Mother Tancy Campbell wasn't exposed to characters who were African American growing up."It wasn't until high school that I started seeing books that had people that looked like me and started getting into black authors like Toni Morrison and Maya Angelou," Campbell says.Third-grade Teacher Kyle Luciani noticed the disparity last year when he started looking through his own classroom library. He went to work last year adding to his library. "I noticed almost all characters are animals or white," Luciani said. "I have books about biographies, about Jackie Chan, about Oprah Winfrey. Books on civil rights leaders ... Books such as don’t touch my hair, books on awareness of cultures."He said after George Floyd died, he added 0 worth of books on diversity and culture to his classroom.Last year, Luciani said he saw the electric change in his students."They love them! I mean I don’t think they’re always aware, 'Oh, it's someone of color,' but it's cool seeing them drawn to them automatically," Luciani said.In a 2015 Collaborative Classroom Diversity Review Book Project, 59% of books in more than 200,000 classrooms across the country had white characters and about 90% of authors were white. A team member of the project said this makes children of other ethnicities feel invisible or insignificant.Licensed psychologist Dr. Michelle Carcel is Latina and trained to teach diversity and inclusion courses. "I certainly take this to heart. It is so important to identify with others who are like you and you can see similarities and so you can also see diversity as a welcoming thing," said Carcel.Campbell believes diverse books will shape the future."I think it gives them confidence that they're the center of the story, I think that it shows them a hero can look like them," said Campbell. "I think it gives them stories of their background, that they might not have known before of their history and their culture that they didn't learn from their parents or grandparents."She has a diverse home library for her 9- and 5-year-old children. She said the latest book they read is about a girl in Africa who has to walk a long way to find water, bring it home, and boil it before she can take a sip. She said her daughter was touched by the book and filled with gratitude we have access to clean drinking water.Carcel said diverse books like this can break down systemic racism and heal generational trauma. 2829

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club has canceled its racing program this weekend, July 17-19. The cancellation follows 15 jockeys recently testing positive for COVID-19. Racing is slated to resume July 24."Assuming these individuals continue to show no symptoms, they will be isolated for a total of 10 days and should be able to resume their usual activities, including riding after that time,” said Dr. Eric McDonald, Medical Director, Epidemiology & Immunizations Services, County of San Diego.Racing at the track is set to return on July 24.The 15 jockeys who tested positive are believed to be asymptomatic, officials said. “Contact tracing procedures are underway in conjunction with the San Diego Health & Human Services Agency. However, a common factor among all but one of the riders that tested positive is that they rode at the recently concluded Los Alamitos meet.”The track ordered testing of all jockeys after two riders, Flavien Prat and Victor Espinoza, tested positive for COVID-19.Espinoza, who rode American Pharaoh to horse racing’s Triple Crown in 2015, spoke about his coronavirus diagnosis earlier this week on “The Winner’s Circle” podcast.Espinoza told podcast host Bram Weinstein that he took a COVID-19 test on July 7 and did not go to Del Mar’s opening weekend because he did not receive his results until July 10.The famed jockey described his symptoms as body aches and join pain, but he did not have a cough, fever or shortness of breath."It's different from a cold. Tuesday at 5 o'clock, it hit me hard for two hours. The next day I wake up normal like nothing happened. I feel fine ... The following day, my body starts hurting, every joint in my body, especially my legs, every joint from my hip to my ankles. And there's not much I can do, anything,” Espinoza told Weinstein.Espinoza added, "I've been in quarantine since March. I've been so careful to take care of myself, and it was one of those little things; you let your guard down, I went to Los Alamitos and that was it.”"Honestly, I can speak from my experience, I don't wish nobody to have this disease. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The California Appeals Court put a stay on the release of a sexually violent predator known as "Bolder than Most" rapist. Back in June 2019, a San Diego County Superior Court judge ruled in favor of conditional release for a sexually violent predator. Judge David M. Gill made the controversial decision for Alvin Ray Quarles, 56.Mary Taylor is a survivor and says she's hopeful with the appeals court stepping in, "we've been hopeful in the past, but this is actually a court saying wait a minute lets look at this." Up until this week, things were moving forward as the search for a place to release Quarles in San Diego County continued. Monday afternoon, Taylor got a call from the deputy district attorney saying they filed for a writ and it had been approved. A writ is similar to an appeal. The California Appeals Court issued a stay. Now, all progress towards finding Quarles a location has stopped and cannot continue again until the courts resolve the appeal. In the meantime, Quarles will stay at the Coalinga State Hospital getting treatment through a program for sexually violent predators. 1131

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The City of San Diego announced Tuesday that the transformed Super 8 motel in Egger Highlands will be used to temporarily serve families and children experiencing homelessness amid COVID-19. The city's purchase and transformation of the motel was approved by the City Council in 2017. The transitional housing units will eventually be used to serve those enrolled in the San Diego Misdemeanants At-Risk Track. The program was created by the City Attorney's Office for chronic misdemeanor offenders with acute drug addiction, according to the city. For now, the recently-renovated motel will provide temporary housing for children and families struggling with homelessness. “We’re looking at every opportunity to help those families and children experiencing homelessness during these trying times,” Mayor Faulconer said. “The rehabilitation of this motel couldn’t come at a better time as the need for temporary shelter has never been greater. I want to thank City Attorney Elliott for partnering with me to provide safety and relief to so many families as we fight to stop the spread of this deadly virus.”The city started moving families to motel rooms in March to allow for proper physical distancing. “During this challenging time, it's more important than ever to ensure our most vulnerable community members are protected,” City Attorney Elliott said. “I am gratified to be able to transition our S.M.A.R.T. on Palm facility to provide temporary emergency housing for families in this time of dire need.”The facility has 42 transitional housing rooms, 39 double-bed units, and three units that meet the Americans with Disability Act standards, the city says. 1693
