Is it an addictive drug, or a way to actually overcome addiction? The FDA is considering regulating an herbal drug called Kratom. But a group of doctors is pushing back, saying it's part of the solution not part of the problem. They may be color coded, but for Catherine Nieves, the liquid she's pouring in her cups are more than trendy new drinks. She says what's inside them, changed her life."I was homeless and a drug addict who lost custody of my oldest child," Nieves says.Nieves owns a store and prepares drinks made with Kratom, a coffee-like herb. After a C-section a few years back, she started taking Kratom for pain, instead of the addictive opioid Percocet her doctor prescribed."It made the pain just as manageable," Nieves says. "But it was healthier for me mentally just to not get back in the habit with pills when it was something that I was already very sensitive to.But the FDA describes Kratom differently, calling it dangerously addictive, and similar to narcotics like opioids with respect to addiction and death."Yes they interact similar with opioid receptors in the body but the effects are very different," says Oliver Grundmann Ph.D. with the University of Florida.Dr. Grundmann is one of several doctors publicly rejecting the FDA's position on Kratom. He says it doesn't impact breathing the way opioids do, so that lessens the chance of an overdose. And he says the FDA is wrong to link it to 44 deaths in the last decade."So we are not saying that Kratom doesn't have potential adverse effects," Dr. Grundmann says. "But is it positively linked to these deaths? We don't think so."Grundmann believes it should be regulated by the FDA but not as a narcotic."What is at the heart of all of this is we want to consumers to be protected and we want them to have quality products," Grundmann."I have children I have a great life that I've made for myself it's just entirely too much to possibly jeopardize," Nieves says.Nieves wants people who are in her situation to see a safer way out.Nieves says, "It seems like a bottomless hole, addiction. But there is so much hope and Kratom gives people hope." 2147

Interim Chief of Police Vanessa Wilson will be tasked with regaining the fractured trust of Aurora, Colorado residents after she was appointed the city's permanent chief of police during a city council meeting Monday night."I am honored, humbled, and energized by the trust the city manager, mayor, and council has placed in me. Aurora is a city that has experienced many triumphs and tragedies, and we sit at a crossroads for our city's future," Wilson said in a prepared statement moments after the vote. "I am committed to leading the Aurora Police Department to be an active and engaged part of this community in building a collaborative and constructive path forward. We will be a transparent partner dedicated to making Aurora a safer city for all, with respect for our diversity, and embrace of unity, and continual conversation about how we can do better."“I believe that she is the right choice to lead the Aurora Police Department,” Aurora Mayor Mike Coffman tweeted Tuesday. “She has a lot of work to do to improve the image of this department and to rebuild trust between our officers and the community.”Wilson's appointment comes at a time when the embattled police department is under the spotlight for a series of controversies over the past year, most notably the violent arrest of Elijah McClain, who would die days later after encountering police the night of Aug. 24.The announcement came a few hours after it was revealed Aurora officers detained a Black family after mistaking their SUV for a stolen motorcycle from another state Sunday, the latest in a string of tarnishing encounters with residents in the community.Coffman said in an interview Tuesday that he believes Wilson is right for the job.“She is not afraid to make the tough decisions, and I believe that she is a person that can move this department forward,” the mayor said. “IT has had a lot of problems: Poor image, bad relationships with the community. So it is really going to take a tremendous effort and a lot of work to move the department forward, and I think she can do that.”Omar Montgomery, the president of the NAACP’s Aurora chapter, says he thinks that the recent incidents involving APD show that the department needs to take a serious look at the culture within the department and how it handles situations like the one on Sunday or the Elijah McClain incident.“We need something different because it seems like every other day there is something we are addressing related to the police department,” Montgomery said. “…If we can get rid of those officers and keep the ones that are doing a phenomenal job I think we will be on the right path to getting a police department that we, all combined, can trust.”Wilson was selected after a months-long nationwide search to replace Chief Nick Metz, who retired from the force Jan. 1.Wilson will continue to lead a department under scrutiny as communities around the nation reexamine the role and operations of police departments in the wake of George Floyd’s death.Marcus Dudley Jr., a commander with Aurora Police Department; Alexander D. Jones, a colonel and bureau chief for the Baltimore County Police Department; and Avery L. Moore, an assistant police chief with the Dallas Police Department, were the other three candidates vying for the position.Aurora City Council also on Monday unanimously passed a resolution banning Aurora police from using carotid holds, which was used on McClain the night of his violent arrest. Incredible video captured by researchers at Florida Atlantic University captured the blacktip shark's annual migration off Florida’s southeast coast.FAU researchers refer to the blacktip shark's as the "snowbirds of the sea". The sharks migrate south during the cold months and head up north when the weather, and water, start to warm back up. They leave the north when water temperatures drop below 71 degrees Fahrenheit and start heading south.The video was taken by FAU researchers on February 27, right off MacArthur Park in Singer Island.“Last year, we saw a dramatic decline in the number of blacktip sharks that migrated south. In fact, it was so low that we estimated the population to be about one-third of what we have seen in previous years,” said Kajiura, a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences and director of the Elasmobranch Research Laboratory in FAU’s Charles E. And of course, they call him "Superman."Over the weekend, Clark, who swims for the Monterey County Aquatic Team, competed at the Far West International Championship in California, where he won the 100-meter butterfly in 1:09:38.That's more than a second better than the 100-meter butterfly record that Phelps set at the championship in 1995.It had gone unbroken, while Phelps went on to win 28 Olympic medals. 598
