BEIJING, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- The central parity rate of the yuan, China's currency Renminbi (RMB), jumped 113 basis points, or 0.17 percent, Tuesday to a new record high at 6.6997 per U.S. dollar, according to the data released by the China Foreign Exchange Trading System.Tuesday's yuan central parity against U.S. dollar beat the previous record of 6.7110 per U.S. dollar on Monday and extended the Chinese currency's gains to eight consecutive trading days.The yuan has picked up its strength against the U.S. dollars and seen increased volatility in the trading days since the People's Bank of China (PBOC), the central bank, announced on June 19 this year to increase exchange rate flexibility.Based on Tuesday's central parity, the Chinese currency has strengthened against the U.S. dollar by 1.87 percent from the rate of 6.8275 per U.S. dollar that was set a day before the PBOC's pledge to increase flexibility.On China's foreign exchange spot market, the yuan can rise or fall 0.5 percent from the central parity rate during trading each day.According to Tuesday's central parity rates, the yuan's value strengthened against all the currencies within its basket with lower rates.The PBOC released the yuan's central parity rates against a basket of currencies -- the U.S. dollar, the euro, the Japanese yen, the Hong Kong dollar, the British pound and the Malaysian Ringgit.The yuan's parity rate against the euro was set by the central bank at 8.7522 Tuesday, lower from 8.7595 Monday.The yuan's rate against 100 yen was 7.8204 Tuesday, compared with 7.8275 Monday.The Chinese currency soared 814 basis points against the British pound with the central parity rate being set at 10.42 from Monday's 10.5014.The central parity of RMB against the U.S. dollar is based on a weighted average of enquired prices from all market makers before the opening of the market in each business day.The central parity of RMB against the other five currencies is based on the central rate of RMB against the U.S. dollar of the same business day as well as the exchange rates of the five currencies against the U.S. dollar at 9 a.m. (0100 GMT) of the same business day in the international foreign exchange market.

UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao arrived in New York Tuesday afternoon to attend a series of meetings of the United Nations.It is Wen's second participation in UN meetings at the UN headquarters since 2008. Chinese President Hu Jintao also attended UN conferences last year.During Wen's three-day stay here, he is expected to attend and address a UN high-level meeting on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the general debate of the 65th session of the UN General Assembly, a summit of the UN Security Council member states and a high-level discussion panel on AIDS and the MDGs.He will also meet with world leaders, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Sino-U.S. friendship groups, overseas Chinese and foreign media in New York.About 140 heads of state and government will attend the three-day MDGs high-level meeting at the UN headquarters, where they will make new commitments to achieving the MDGs before the 2015 deadline.The MDGs, forged at a UN summit in 2000, includes eight ambitious goals, such as reducing extreme poverty in the world by half, cutting infant and maternal mortality, achieving universal primary education and halting the spread of HIV/AIDS and other diseases which kill millions each year.In a joint interview with the UN-based Chinese media last week, UN chief Ban voiced his confidence in China to meet those goals on time and urged other world leaders to keep their promises on the MDGs.

BEIJING, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese farmers have begun to reap crops as autumn drew to a close, and the nation is expecting a good harvest this year, China's Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) said here Tuesday in a statement on its website.The forecast is based upon higher average yields and an estimate that China's planting area for autumn crops rose by 10 million Mu (about 667,000 hectares) from one year ago, said the ministry.According to figures from the MOA, a total of 386 million mu of crops had been harvested by Sept. 27, accounting for 33.3 percent of the total.In a break down of the harvest, 130 million mu of rice, or nearly 50 percent of the total rice planted, had been reaped, while 140 million mu of corn and 60.7 million mu of soybean were harvested, accounting for 28.5 percent and 46.5 percent of the total, respectively, said the MOA.The ministry also arranged for 29 million sets of farm equipment to help with the autumn harvest, it said.China's grain output reached 530.8 million tonnes in 2009, the sixth consecutive year of growth in grain yield.In the wake of a severe drought in China's southwestern regions earlier in the year, summer grain output this year stood at 123.1 million tons, down 0.3 percent from one year ago.

BEIJING, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao has urged the Communist Party of China and the government to give priority to education in their work, in order to push forward socialist modernization and achieve the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.Xinhua News Agency on Wednesday issued the full text of President Hu's speech on the country's education cause, which was made during a high-profile work conference on national education held in Beijing on July 13.In the speech, President Hu said education is the cornerstone of national rejuvenation and social progress, and the basic means to improve all-round development of individuals.He said authorities should be innovative when deepening education reform and enhancing international education cooperation, and should promote education equality by protecting citizens' lawful rights to education, supporting those in need, and promoting balanced education development between different regions and between urban and rural areas.China's National Plan for Medium and Long-term Education Reform and Development (2010-2020) should be fully carried out, Hu said, adding the whole society should be mobilized to support the country's education development.President Hu said the government should expand education coverage across the country and strive for an equal and high-quality education system for all citizens.Hu pointed out five objectives in promoting education development.First, the education cause must be treated as a strategic mission and priority in the country's overall development plan.Strategic priority should be given to education in the work of the Party and the government, he said, adding that financing and public resources should be allocated in favor of education and human resources development.Hu pledged that the government will increase investment into education cause and realize a goal that 4 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) will be spent on education by 2012.

NANJING, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Sunday urged China to keep moving down the path of sustainable development and put greater emphasis on social equity and environmental sustainability.Addressing students of Nanjing University in east China's Jiangsu Province, Ban said as the world's most populous country with the fastest growing economy, China has become the world's largest manufacturer and exporter but also the greatest emitter of greenhouse gases."Seven of the world's 10 most-polluted cities are in China. Your environmental footprint is growing daily," Ban said, adding that fortunately China is beginning to fight the side-effects of prosperity -- climate change and environmental degradation -- besides poverty.The UN chief noted that many of these development problems were raised during discussions as Chinese leaders recently met to draw the 12th Five-Year Plan for economic and social development of the country from 2010 to 2015.Ban applauded the Chinese government's goal of leading the country into an all-around Xiaokang society, or well-off society, by 2020 and said making Xiaokang a reality will, perhaps, ultimately become China's "great export -- its gift to humankind.""You already have a concept for it... Let China be the country to show the way ahead. We all need to get serious about sustainable development," he added.On the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) talks, Ban said he is pleased to see progress in adaptation, technological cooperation and steps to reduce deforestation, but he has concerns over the slow progress in setting mitigation targets, monitoring, verification and the future of the Kyoto Protocol.The UN chief called on all governments to work together in a spirit of compromise and common sense in pushing forward UNFCCC progress during the Cancun meeting in December.Ban was in Nanjing for a short visit after attending the Summit Forum held on the closing day of the Shanghai World Expo. He received an Honorary Doctorate in Laws from Nanjing University.Ban began his China visit on Saturday and is expected to leave on Wednesday.
