BEIJING, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- The state-owned assets in China's centrally-administered state-owned enterprises (SOE) reached 2.01 trillion yuan (297.40 billion U.S. dollars) by the end of June, up 10.71 percent from 2008, China's state-owned assets regulator said on Thursday.Nearly a quarter of the SOEs have state-owned assets over 10 billion yuan each, while six have state-owned assets over 100 billion yuan, the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission said in a statement on its website."China's state-owned capital has been flowing towards big companies with international competitiveness," said the statement.Some 30 central SOEs are listed as Fortune 500 companies. BEIJING, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- China's central bank and banking regulatory commission have ordered the country's financial institutions to provide preferential loan policies to victims in the mudslide-hit regions of Gansu and Sichuan provinces.The minimum down payment for a home in the disaster-affected urban regions could be reduced to 10 percent while the interest rate for home loans could be cut to possibly 60 percent of the benchmark rate, the People's Bank of China, the central bank, and China Banking Regulatory Commission said in a joint statement issued over the weekend.Banks were also asked to help ease loan pressures for rural residents in the disaster-affected regions.A massive mudslide, which took place on Aug. 8 in Zhouqu County of northwest China's Gansu Province, has killed 1,248 people as of 4 p.m. Sunday, with 496 still missing. Flooding and mudslides in southwest China's Sichuan Province has left at least 13 dead and 59 missing.

ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers were busy searching a possible survivor in a damaged building Wednesday night after they were told cries for help were heard from the building in a mudslide-hit town in northwest China.Zhang Guiquan, an army officer, told Xinhua some residents of Zhouqu County of Gansu Province heard cries from the partially-collapsed building near the Bailong River that overflowed after being blocked by mudslides.About 40 soldiers braving heavy rains and potential mudslides were detecting signs of life near the building after receiving the report from the residents, Zhang said.Hopes of finding any survivors faded as the thunderstorms battered the county seat of Zhouqu Wednesday night, nearly four days after the mudslides hit the town, leaving 1,117 people dead and 627 missing.

HARARE, July 7 (Xinhua) --The eighth session of the Zimbabwe/ China joint permanent commission ended in Harare on Wednesday with a pledge by the two countries to widen and deepen economic cooperation.The two countries discussed ways of enhancing various cooperation projects already being implemented and new ones in the energy, agriculture, manufacturing, transport, tourism and water sectors.An agreement was also signed for China to provide 1.5 million U. S. dollars to the China-Zimbabwe Friendship Hospital in Mahusekwa, Mashonaland East Province, for medical equipment and drugs.The hospital is part of the several projects that include two primary schools and an agricultural demonstration center that China is constructing in Zimbabwe as part of the eight measures agreed to at the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit in 2006 in Beijing.Other support from China includes a 200 million U.S. dollars buyer's credit facility extended by the China Exim Bank for procurement of agricultural inputs to boost food production in Zimbabwe.Zimbabwean foreign minister Simbarashe Mumbengegwi praised China for setting a shining example to other world donors by honoring pledges it made to assist Zimbabwe under the Forum for China-Africa Cooperation.Mumbengegwi noted that under the eight measures enunciated by Chinese President Hu Jintao at the FOCAC heads of state summit in Beijing in 2006, projects earmarked for Zimbabwe are now at various stages of completion.The Chinese government has also dispatched 10 agricultural experts and 23 volunteers to buttress the cooperation."By successfully implementing these measures, China has set a shining example for other donors and international cooperating partners who do not always honor their commitments," Mumbengegwi said at the opening of the eight session.He said Zimbabwe is also willing to learn and benefit from China's experience and expertise in the economic sphere, which has transformed the country into a global economic powerhouse."Zimbabwe will, therefore, welcome Chinese investment and is ready to discuss during the joint commission specific projects in the energy, agriculture, manufacturing, transport, tourism and water sectors," he said.Mumbengegwi thanked China Exim Bank for extending the 200 million U.S. dollars buyer's credit loan repayment period from five to eight years, saying this would give Zimbabwe the breathing space to turn around its economy and enhance capacity to repay loans extended by China."The payment of the arrears and extension of the repayment period on the 200 million U.S. dollars buyer's credit loan have paved the way for increased cooperation between Zimbabwe and China, " he said.While hailing China as a good example of a reliable and dependent donor partner, Mumbengegwi said he hoped the Asian country will similarly implement new eight measures announced by Premier Wen Jiabao at the fourth ministerial conference of FOCAC held in Egypt last year.He said the projects that have been identified for implementation in Zimbabwe are in critical sectors of energy, water, health, education, agriculture and social infrastructure.

BEIJING, Aug.1 (Xinhua) -- China's General Administration of Press and Publication (GAPP) has voiced its support for journalists' rights of supervision after police in an east China county wrongly issued an arrest warrant for a journalist."News organizations have the right to know, interview, cover, criticize and monitor events regarding national and public interests. Journalistic activities by news organizations and their reporters are protected by law," read a statement posted on the GAPP's website.The statement came after police of Suichang County in Zhejiang Province canceled a warrant for Qiu Ziming, a reporter of the Economic Observer News, who was accused of defamation by a publicly-listed company.Qiu had previously been wanted by the police of Suichang after Zhejiang Kan Specialty Material Co., Ltd. (Kan) accused him of defaming the company with fabricated stories.However, police of Lishui City, which administers Suichang, ordered the county's public security bureau to cancel the warrant for Qiu after a review found the warrant failed to meet statutory requirements.Police officials said earlier Friday that the investigation into allegations of defamation against Qiu and his newspaper would continue.
