The city received nearly 27,000 requests for feces removal in the most recent fiscal year, although not all are human.Mayor London Breed last year announced the formation of a special six-person "poop patrol" team where each cleaner earns more than ,000 a year.Advocates say steam cleaning requests have dropped in areas surrounding some of the public toilets. Butler was released last year from San Quentin State Prison, scared and apprehensive and in need of a job. He went to work at a Pit Stop.Technically, his job was to prevent drug use in the bathrooms and make sure homeless people didn't set up camp."The reality is I'm a security guard. I was a babysitter, I was a social worker, I was a counselor. I did a lot of things that was not necessarily in the scope of my job description, but this is my community," Butler said. "So my thought was, if I saw somebody that needed help, that's why I'm there — to help."Homelessness has surged throughout California, and cities are struggling to open more bathrooms. Officials are considering adding port-a-potties and special loos designed by the city of Portland, Oregon, and expanding hours of restrooms in government buildings.Sacramento, which is in a county where a one-night count of the homeless increased 19% in two years, tried a Pit Stop but stopped after a few months because it cost too much.Los Angeles Councilmember Mike Bonin initially thought the stops too pricey, but he now understands that having someone to watch over the bathrooms has its upsides. Los Angeles saw a 16% increase over a year in its one-night count of homeless, to 36,000."I heard from everyone, from people affiliated with law enforcement, from people who live in the neighborhood, from homeless advocates, from people who are homeless themselves, that it's important to have a staff to make sure they stay clean and free of destruction or abuse," he said.Down the street from Ahmed Al Barak's corner market is Aref Elgaali's Z Zoul, a Sudanese cafe. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says the U.S. is considering a ban on Chinese social media apps, including the wildly popular short video platform TikTok.In an interview Monday with Fox News' Laura Ingraham, Pompeo said people should only download the app if they want their private information in the hands of the Chinese Communist Party.TikTok is owned by ByteDance, a company based in Beijing. (KGTV) — A dream trip to Africa for a Santee grandmother turned into a nightmare as she sat in a tour bus.Daughter-in-law Tomira Baca-Craig says Jeanette Craig, who retired four years ago, left for South Africa two weeks ago. Jeanette had been saving for the trip for more than a year.  It was her first trip to Africa.A few days after she arrived, she was on a tour bus headed to an animal preserve in the landlocked country of Lesotho when the bus overturned, killing three and injuring more than 12 tourists on board, including Jeanette."Because she had her seatbelt on, she wasn't thrown. She was trapped upside down. When the bus rolled, that's when she sustained all her injuries," said Baca-Craig.Jeanette was transported by helicopter to a clinic just outside Lesotho. She has since undergone several surgeries, suffering a fractured pelvis and leg, and torn ligaments in her legs."Now her pain is just shocking. There's a ton of breakthrough pain every time she shifts because the pelvis is bone on bone," said Baca-Craig.Jeanette is comforted by her daughter, who just arrived in South Africa. Loved ones say they just want to bring her home.  "We'd like to get an MRI and another CT scan to and rule out everything else because it was such a traumatic accident," said Baca-Craig. The problem? SEATTLE, Wash. – Models show a “second wave” of coronavirus deaths beginning in the United States in September, the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation said Thursday.The IHME has extended its COVID-19 forecasts through Oct. 1 and the institute says they show 169,890 deaths in the US by October 1, with a possible range between 133,201 and 290,222.IHME says deaths nationwide are predicted to remain fairly level through August and begin to rise again at the end of the month, with a more pronounced increase during September. However, the institute says some states will see the increase earlier due to increased mobility and relaxation of social distancing mandates.“We’re now able to look ahead and see where states need to begin planning for a second wave of COVID-19,” said IHME Director Dr. Christopher Murray. “We hope to see our model proven wrong by the swift actions governments and individuals take to reduce transmission.”Based on IHME’s models, these states are estimated to have the highest numbers of deaths by Oct. 1:· New York: 32,310 (range between 31,754 and 33,241)· New Jersey: 13,177 (12,881–13,654)· California: 8,821(7,151–12,254)· Michigan: 8,771 (7,098–14,743)IHME says the states with the earliest uptick in deaths, according to current modeling, are Florida, Arizona, Georgia, and Colorado.“If the US is unable to check the growth in September, we could be facing worsening trends in October, November, and the following months if the pandemic, as we expect, follows pneumonia seasonality,” Dr. Murray said.According to IHME, increasing travel in some states and the overlap with the flu season are likely to impact hospital demand for services in fall and winter.The IHME is an independent population health research center at the University of Washington School of Medicine.
