HARPERS FERRY, W.V. – For more than 2,000 miles, the Appalachian Trail winds its way through more than a dozen states.It’s so-called “psychological midpoint” is the town of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia.“This community represents all the communities up and down the trail,” said Sandy Marra, who heads up the Appalachian Trail Conservancy.Ever since the pandemic began, she said there’s been a noticeable increase in people hiking the trail.“On any given weekday, even in the dead of summer, typically you wouldn't see anyone out on our trails,” Marra said. “And during the week now, you could see dozens and dozens of people just hiking.”That’s something other public lands across the country are seeing, too, in the time of COVID-19 and social distancing.Deborah Williams is with the Outdoor Industry Association, based in Colorado.“We did see a trend of more people exploring the outdoors in March and April and then that really did continue into May and June,” Williams said. “And what we initially saw is a little bit of escapism, in the first few weeks, actually continued.”That outdoor recreation can have a big impact on the economy.In West Virginia, for example, the outdoor industry is responsible for more than 91,000 direct jobs, 0 million in local and state tax revenue and billion in consumer spending.Across the country, it all adds up to 7 billion in consumer spending, supporting 7.6 million jobs.Williams said there’s the potential for that to grow even more in every state across America, in part, because of federal funding from the new “Great American Outdoors Act,” which was just passed by Congress and signed into law by the president.“It will fully fund the land and water conservation fund to the tune of 0 million,” Williams said. “So, this is our country's really flagship mechanism for funding conservation and maintenance of our public lands and waters.”Back at the Appalachian Trail, Sandy Marra hopes people now rediscovering the outdoors take care to protect it, as well.“Because of the pandemic and so many people wanting to get outside, the resource was being overwhelmed,” she said. “This is a great chance for us to reach a whole new audience of people. This is their park, right? So, they get to use it and enjoy it, but they also have a responsibility too.”It's a responsibility that can help future generations experience what’s great about the great outdoors. 2419

Gina Haspel was confirmed Thursday to be the first female director of the CIA with the help of votes from a half-dozen Senate Democrats.Haspel was confirmed in a 54-45 vote, the culmination of a roller-coaster nomination that appeared to be in danger at several points after she was abruptly selected by President Donald Trump in March.Three Republicans opposed Haspel's nomination: Sens. Rand Paul of Kentucky, Jeff Flake of Arizona and John McCain of Arizona, although McCain did not vote because he's battling brain cancer at home.But Haspel secured enough votes to win confirmation with the backing of six Democrats, including Virginia Sen. Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee.Most of the Democratic votes in favor of Haspel came from senators who are up for re-election in November in states that Trump won in 2016, including Sens. (AP) — The man who killed four people and wounded two others in random stabbings across two Southern California cities is a gang member with a violent criminal record who had served time in prison, authorities said Thursday.Zachary Castaneda "could have injured or killed many other people" had he not been arrested Wednesday while carrying out attacks and robberies during the two-hour wave of violence that began in Garden Grove, the city's police Chief Tom DaRe said.It wasn't immediately known if Castaneda, 33, had a lawyer who could speak on his behalf. He was scheduled to be arraigned Friday.Castaneda was taken into custody when he walked out of a convenience store in the neighboring city of Santa Ana, dropping a knife and a gun he had taken from a security guard he had just killed, police said. The suspect was covered in blood, DaRe said.Castaneda was kept in restraints as detectives tried to interview him, the chief said at a press conference."He remained violent with us through the night," DaRe said. "He never told us why he did this."Castaneda has a conviction for possession of meth for sale while armed with an assault rifle, DaRe said. Investigators were still putting together his entire criminal history, he said. Officials didn't specify what crimes sent Castaneda to prison or when he was released.The violence appeared to be random and the only known motive seem to be "robbery, hate, homicide," Garden Grove police Lt. The father said his passport, green card, sword collection and even a dining table were taken.Erwin Hauprich said his father never called back and he went to check on him after hearing there had been a stabbing at the complex.A police officer told him that Helmuth Hauprich had been taken to the hospital, where he died, the son said. He said he was told his father's roommate was killed in the apartment.A body was removed from the complex by stretcher Thursday.Erwin Hauprich said his father left Romania first for Germany and then the United States more than two decades ago. He said his father worked on an assembly line and lived in the complex for years.He said Helmuth Hauprich was a down-to-earth man who strove to make a life for his family.Police said surveillance cameras caught some of the carnage."We have video showing him attacking these people and conducting these murders," Whitney said.Whitney said the man lived in a Garden Grove apartment building where he stabbed two men during some kind of confrontation. One man died inside and the other at a hospital.Whitney said a bakery also was robbed.The bakery owner, Dona Beltran, said she was sitting in her car charging her cellphone when she saw a tattooed man get out of a Mercedes and go inside the business. Beltran, 45, followed him inside to offer help, but kept quiet when she saw him trying to open the cash register.She then ran out of the shop and yelled she was being robbed before taking refuge in a nearby dental office, she said. He ended up taking the entire register with him, which had about 0, she said."I saved myself because I was in the car," she said in Spanish on Thursday. "Thank God I am alive."The man also robbed an insurance business, where a 54-year-old employee was stabbed several times and was expected to survive.The woman "was very brave," Whitney said.
