SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The family of a man who died after sky-diving in Otay Ranch created a Gofundme page for his two sons left behind.Jonas Wingen said his brother, Joe, died Sunday after suffering a medical emergency while sky diving."Deployed his chute, everything was fine... While he was descending something happened, he had a heart attack I'm not sure," said Wingen.Joe's two sons, Jo Jo and Riley, now moving to Lake Elsinore to live with their mom, while grieving the loss of their father."Jo Jo, it's hitting him hard, he's 14... Riley's handling it well," Wingen said. He said the family created a Gofundme to help ease some of the hardship and support the boys' future."Jo Jo is going to get braces... We're going to put some of it in a college fund for when they hit 18," he said.Riley created a memorial video showing how much they idolized their dad, remembering jam sessions and adventures. Wingen said Joe liked to ride dirtbikes, go surfing and play instruments."You know he worked hard and he played hard. That was Joe, and he loved his two boys," he said. "The last thing he said to me was, 'I'm going sky diving tomorrow wish me luck, woo!'"Wingen said Joe's last text he sent captured his essence: "fears lead to an average life."Wingen said their family is planning a celebration of life for August 5, which would have been Joe's birthday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Carte Hotel in the heart of Little Italy is not nearly as full as it could be.It had been open just a few months before the pandemic hit, "We had a great start until March and the virus started showing up," said general manager Henri Birmele.Like many other hotels in California, The Carte is only allowed to book rooms for essential workers.But staff is preparing for when the Governor says they can fully reopen. "We have sanitizers on every floor, every piece of equipment that's available we have throughout the building to take care of team members and hotel guests," Birmele said Common areas will be sanitized every hour, the restaurant and rooftop bar will be spaced out to make it easier to social distance, valet service won't be available, there will be at least 12 hours and a deep clean between when one person checks out and another checks in and room service will leave orders at the door instead of bringing them in. The Carte is hoping to ease people back into hotels by encouraging "staycations" and planning to offer locals discounts and deals. "How people react, I don't know. I think time will tell. I think we have all the precautions in place to make sure that everyone is safe during their stay," said Birmele. 1270

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Sweetwater Union High School District officials say their revised budget will not have a major impact on students, but some parents are getting notices from schools informing them of cuts to some afterschool programs, tutoring and summer school.The discovery of an accounting miscalculation over the summer led to a million budget shortfall that the district rushed to fix. On Oct. 8, the district’s board unanimously approved a revised and balanced 2018-19 budget. The San Diego County Office of Education has until Nov. 8 to approve it.Changes to the budget include furlough days for numerous district employees, elimination of paid training days for teachers and cuts to the adult education program. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The California GOP Sunday endorsed neither of the two Republican frontrunners in the gubernatorial race. In order to earn the endorsement, one of the candidates, either Travis Allen or John Cox, had to get 60 percent of the delegates' votes. During the first vote, Cox received 55.3 percent of the vote while Allen earned 40.5 percent of the vote. A motion to change the rules of the convention was brought up by supporters of Cox, but the motion failed, leaving both candidates without the endorsement of their party.  567

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Drug Enforcement Agency launched a summer project drilling down on factors leading to violent crime across the nation. It is called Project Safeguard.Special Agent in Charge of the San Diego district, John Callery, said, "over 75% of those [violent] crimes are driven to get money to buy drugs."He said drugs and crime go hand in hand. "When a person devolves into a drug addict unfortunately they become very desperate right? And a desperate person will do desperate things to get money and buy drugs."Callery said his team geared up to knock out 15 cases with violent criminals. The arrests happened from August to October."We took a three month, for lack of a better word, a surge. Let’s get violent actors off the street. Let’s arrest them, DEA, and let’s charge them federally." Callery said they arrested 34 criminals.He added they have a lot of evidence to go through as well, "we’ve seized 71 firearms and... seized 160 kilograms of heroin and 160 kilograms of fentanyl."He hopes the arrests lead to hundreds more and reveal kingpins in the Mexican Drug Cartels."We’re a border town and we have a huge responsibility here to try and stop drugs from entering the United States because 75% of all drugs enter right here in our area and go to the rest of the United States." Callery said he is incredibly proud of his teamHe said five agents were infected with the novel coronavirus since March and have recovered. He said they haven't stopped working through the pandemic.Callery said his next big task is National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on October 24th.
