JIANGYIN, Jiangsu, July 1 (Xinhua) -- China's manned deep-diving submersible, the Jiaolong, embarked on a journey on Friday during which it will make a 5,000-meter dive in the Pacific Ocean.During the dive, the submersible will undergo several operational tests in which it will take photos, shoot video, survey seabeds and take samples from the ocean floor, according to Jin Jiancai, deputy director of the submersible's diving test program team.The tests will be conducted in the Pacific Ocean in accordance with a contract signed between the China Ocean Mineral Resources Research & Development Association and the International Seabed Authority (ISA).The submersible is scheduled to spend 47 days at sea, according to a statement from the Ministry of Science and Technology.A submersible differs from a submarine, as it typically depends on another vessel or facility for support.The Jiaolong, designed to reach a depth of 7,000 meters, completed 17 dives in the South China Sea between May 31 and July 18 last year, reaching 3,759 meters during its deepest dive.In the year since the submersible's last dive, program team members have made several technical improvements to the submersible and its support vessel, Jin said.Jin said the program team members are "very confident" about the test.He also stressed that the test will be carried out in accordance with the provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea as well as the ISA's rules and regulations.The Jiaolong is the world's first manned submersible designed to reach depths of 7,000 meters below sea level, according to Xu Qinan, the submersible's chief designer.

Together, the modifiable risk factors contributed to 50 percent of Alzheimer’s cases worldwide.The researchers want to carry out more work to find out how many people can prevent the disease by making small changes to their lifestyle.

SAN FRANCISCO, June 28 (Xinhua) -- Google Android chief Andy Rubin said on Tuesday that the activations of Android-powered devices are growing at a rate of 4.4 percent on a weekly basis, with over 500,000 devices activated each day worldwide."There are now over 500,000 Android devices activated every day, and it's growing at 4.4 percent w/w," tweeted Rubin, Google's Senior Vice President of Mobile who oversees the development of Android, the open-source operating system for smartphones.Last month, Google said at its annual developer conference Google I/O that 400,000 Android devices were being activated each day, compared with 300,000 daily activations in December and 100, 000 in May 2010.More research data have shown Android system's soaring market share and popularity. PARIS, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- European heavy-lift launcher Ariane 5 lifted off two communication satellites on Saturday.The Ariane 5, carrying Astra 1N and BSAT-3c/JCSAT-110R, was launched at 2252 GMT on Saturday from Kourou launch centre in French Guiana, according to live broadcast of the launching process.This was the fourth mission of Ariane 5 in 2011 and its 203th flight that sent off the two satellites Saturday night to their respective geostationary transfer orbits.Astra 1N, to be separated first, is built by EADS Astrium in Toulouse, France, for the Luxembourg-based operator SES Astra. With a designed lifespan of 15 years, it has an estimated liftoff mass of 5,350 kg and is fitted with 52 active Ku-band transponders.It is initially to deliver interim capacity from an orbital position of 28.2 degree East, and will subsequently move to SES Astra's prime location at 19.2 degree East for primary and backup services.BSAT-3c/JCSAT-110R is manufactured by Lockheed Martin Commercial Space Systems in Newtown, Pennsylvania, for Japanese operators B-SAT Corporation and SKY Perfect JSAT Corporation. This satellite weighs approximately 2,910 kg at launch time. It is to be positioned at 110 degree East longitude in geostationary orbit with a lifetime exceeding 16 years.This Ariane 5 flight has been postponed twice, firstly due to some technical problem in early July and then delayed by bad weather.Arianespace plans to achieve six Ariane 5 missions through this year.
