LOS ANGELES (AP) — Authorities are seeking to dismiss roughly 2 million old minor warrants and citations in the hopes of easing legal burdens on the Los Angeles homeless population.The offices of the Los Angeles district attorney, city attorney and police chief announced the filing of the motions Wednesday, saying they are seeking to reduce the court’s backlog and focus on serious offenses.Homelessness rose 16% in LA over the past year, to more than 36,000 people, according to a June report by the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority.The city and district attorneys are also seeking to dismiss old fines and fees for minor violations.Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore told The Associated Press in July that he considered homelessness to be a “humanitarian crisis of our generation.” 803

She was 70.Engel died Friday in Princeton, New Jersey, said her friend and executor, John Quilty. LOS ANGELES (AP) — California’s Republican Party has acknowledged owning unofficial ballot drop boxes that state election officials say aren’t allowed. California election officials received reports about the boxes in Fresno, Los Angeles and Orange counties. On Sunday, the secretary of state issued a memo telling county registrars the boxes are illegal and ballots must be mailed or brought to official voting locations. State GOP spokesman Hector Barajas said Monday the party owns the boxes. He declined to say how many exist and where they are located. Barajas said the state’s law governing so-called ballot harvesting allows an organization to collect and return groups of ballots. He said the GOP’s boxes are no different than methods use by Democrats to ensure ballots get returned.Neal Kelley, the Orange County's registrar of voters, said official drop boxes are clearly recognizable and carry the official county elections logo. LOS ANGELES (AP) — A shirtless man is in custody after leading Los Angeles-area authorities on an auto pursuit that ended in a Venice Beach parking lot where he was taken down by a stun gun.News helicopters showed the scene Friday afternoon as the pursuit transitioned from a freeway to city streets and then entered the parking lot, where the driver finally stopped and got out of the SUV.The man started walking away, but officers equipped with guns and less-lethal weapons closed in and he suddenly fell flat on his back.Officers swarmed the man as beachgoers gathered to watch.Police tell KTLA the man was suspected of assault and making criminal threats against his mother. 686
