Now, posts with the tag #IAmVanessaGuillen are circulating online, as people share their own stories of sexual assault in the military.Billiekai Boughton with the San Diego Women Veterans Network said any conversation like this can bring up hard memories for female veterans. She said while many women have a positive experience in the military, four out of five females report harassment or assault. The goal of her group is to support women through any of this pain. She says this is important in a community like San Diego which has about 26,000 female veterans.“For those of us who have been in the military and have had negative experiences, this can be a memory (sic) of feeling unsafe,” said Boughton.The group’s website says the most common request of women veterans in San Diego is to meet other women veterans. Their primary goal is to create a community for female military veterans, while also encouraging community service and policy change, which encourages and embraces the positive traits female vets have to offer.“Our friends remind us how strong we are. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- San Diego State University held an inauguration for their new president. Dr. Adela de la Torre is the ninth president for SDSU but the first female president. She was appointed in 2018. During her speech she said, “I know I stand here as first woman to serve as permanent president to lead this university, but I recognize that I stand on the shoulders of women who have shaped the identity of SDSU from the very beginning”. Looking at the coming years, she says there is critical work that needs to be done. San Diego (KGTV)- We’re learning more information about the seemingly healthy political commentator who dies suddenly in San Diego over the weekend. 26-year-old Bre Payton contracted the H1N1 flu virus, also known as swine flu, and meningitis. On Friday, a friend posted on twitter she found Payton unconscious. She was rushed to the hospital where she later died. The San Diego County Health Department says the So-Cal resident contracted both illnesses before arriving in San Diego. Meningitis causes inflammation in the brain and spine. A recent outbreak was reported at San Diego State University, but it is unclear if the strain Payton had was bacterial, like the SDSU cases, or if it was viral. In a report released last week, there were over 1,300 influenza cases in San Diego County between July and December. Almost 200 of those cases were the H1N1 flu. Health officials say, young adults, like Payton, are more likely to get the flu virus than kids and older adults. Middle age adults are not regularly exposed to the virus, and they have the lowest vaccination rates. News of her death is hitting hard to her family. Her parents released a statement to ABC News saying: “Bre was a brilliant, determined and beautiful girl from day one. She could silence a room with her beauty, and at the same moment impress everyone with her articulate reasoning. We miss her dearly, and our hearts are broken." 1415

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A record 621 people died of drug overdoses in San Francisco so far this year, a staggering number that far outpaces the 173 deaths from COVID-19 the city has seen thus far. That's according to a San Francisco Chronicle report, which says the crisis fueled by the powerful painkiller fentanyl could have been far worse if it wasn’t for the nearly 3,000 times Narcan was used this year to reverse an overdose. On and off rain Saturday morning had event organizers making tough decisions to cancel, while others decided to keep their events going, rain or shine. The Street Medicine Clinic for the Homeless at Balboa Park was canceled due to heavy rain Saturday morning. But the Northpark Arts Festival went on despite some sprinkles.
