More than half a million businesses received the federal funds the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP). The program was created in March to help small business and their employees survive the financial impact of the pandemic. The program lent businesses money at a low-interest rate, with the potential for the loans to be forgiven or turned into a grant if the company retained and paid their workers for a given time.Watchdog groups, like U.S. PIRG, were among many groups and elected leaders that called for transparency with PPP. After initially resisting, in May, the U.S. Department of Treasury and the Small Business Administration announced they would release the names of all businesses that received a PPP loan in the amount of 0,000 or more.Earlier this month, that list was released. What has come to light is that millionaire, billionaires, and even some celebrities received the federal aid intended to help struggling small businesses. For example, rapper and fashion designer Kanye West, with an estimated net worth of .3 billion, received a PPP loan for his company Yeezy.“From the very outset, the public, watchdogs, and elected officials had a very good reason to want data to see where this money was going,” said R.J. Cross with U.S. PIRG. “As we just learned, we had good reason to be questioning is this program going to do what it was intended to do?”Cross is calling for the federal government to take steps to find out how much money went to small businesses and how much went to larger companies that may have had access to other sources of cash to get them through the financial hardship.“A big improvement on the program would be true audits on all of the loan amounts,” said Cross. “That, say, if we find that you could’ve probably gotten money somewhere else we are going to take those taxpayers dollars back.”Currently, only loans over million will be audited, but most of the loans taken out, including some by millionaires and billionaires, were just below that threshold.“We don’t have any proof to say that they picked that amount strategically, but it certainly raises questions,” Cross added.Watchdog groups say the only way to answer those questions for the American people is continued transparency and expanded audits.“Fraud and corruption are a real concern anytime the government is spending and giving money to companies, and especially, the pace in which it is happening right now,” Cross said. “There is reason to keep a very close eye on what is happening next. The biggest bailout in U.S. history deserves the most transparency in U.S. history.”The SBA and treasury department have not given an indication that they will expand audits. NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A veteran wounded in the line of duty, who was told he would never run again, is gearing up to run a marathon in Nashville.Randy Woodward, of Smyrna, Tennessee is in the process of running 10 marathons in five weeks.He will complete each 26.2-mile run while carrying an 8-foot-by-5-foot American flag.“It’s been really great,” said Woodward.  “It will be something to look back on and say you did it. You finished it.”Woodward has already completed marathons in Kansas City, Missouri; Des Moines, Iowa; Lexington, Virginia; Arlington, Virginia; Savannah, Georgia and Bowling Green, Ohio. He has plans to run in future events in Louisville, Kentucky; Fort Benning, Georgia and another in Nashville.Woodward was on his second tour in Iraq when he was hit by a roadside bomb. He spent nine months in hospitals recovering.  At the time, doctors told him he would never run again.“Fortunately, I have all my limbs,” said Woodward.  “I’m blessed and thankful for that.”Woodward was awarded a Purple Heart for his bravery.Having run a marathon before his injury, Woodward was determined to run again. After recovering, he set his sights on the bold decision to run back-to-back marathons over the course of consecutive weeks.At each stop, Woodward’s efforts and his American flag have been getting a lot of attention.“I got just an outpouring of support from people,” said Woodward.  “It’s been really great.”Woodward said the reason he is running is to spread patriotism, and he hopes his efforts inspire others.“There is just so much divide in this country, and there is so much hate,” Woodward said.   1709

Mosquitos are known for spreading a number of infectious diseases through their bites. But a trial set to begin in 2021 hopes to slow the spread of these diseases, such as West Nile and Zika.A plan approved for the Florida Keys will release millions of genetically modified mosquitoes, known as Aedes aegypti, in hopes of reducing the number of bites. The genetically modified mosquitoes are all males, which, unlike female mosquitoes, do not bite humans.The trial is being conducted by Oxitec, which is based in the UK. Earlier in 2020, the EPA gave Oxitec approval to move forward with the trial.“To meet today’s public health challenges head-on, the nation needs to facilitate innovation and advance the science around new tools and approaches to better protect the health of all Americans,” the EPA said earlier this year. “After all appropriate approvals are garnered, EPA looks forward to receiving field test results regarding the effectiveness of this promising new tool that could help combat the spread of mosquito-borne diseases like the Zika virus.The Florida Keys Mosquito Control District say that the male mosquitoes have been genetically modified to only provide live male offspring when mating with a female.The experimental use permit begins in 2021, and the trial must conclude by 2022.Some environmental groups and residents have expressed opposition to the plan. A group opposing the plan said that 2,000 letters were sent to officials requesting the plan be put on hold.Some are concerned that timing of the trial during a pandemic is not a good policy."The release of genetically engineered mosquitoes will needlessly put Floridians, the environment and endangered species at risk in the midst of a pandemic," said Dana Perls, food and technology Program Manager at Friends of the Earth. "This approval is about maximizing Oxitec's profits, not about the pressing need to address mosquito-borne diseases."Others say the plan is ‘risky.’"The Mosquito Control Board has an obligation to our community, not a vendor that's products are risky and untrustworthy. FKMCD wants to proceed with an experiment that may be damaging to public and environmental health and our local economy," said Barry Wray, Executive Director of the Florida Keys Environmental Coalition. Doctors and nurses say they are treating patients in hallways and parking lots because of the lack of space for more people.The California Department of Public Health reports there are 0% ICU beds available in the large Southern California region, including Los Angeles and San Diego, as well as the San Joaquin Valley region in the center of the state.The record high number of people in the hospital with a transmissible disease is straining medical facilities, as well as staff.Leaders around the country say they are increasingly worried about staffing levels at medical facilities. At a time when there are surges in patients needing intense care, there are staffing shortages and staff balancing quarantine measures.
