All across our country, small business owners are fighting day in and day out to stay afloat during these uncertain times.Two small business owners in Utah have seen just about everything in their lifetimes, and their resolve to keep going is inspiring.In the heart of Sugarhouse, Utah, there’s a place that uses perhaps more sugar than anywhere else.“We bake a lot of eclairs,” said Bob Walkenhorst with a smile.Bob is 87-years-old and his older brother, Al, is 92-years-old.For almost six decades, Bob and Al Walkenhorst have been showing up to work at Carol’s Pastry Shop in a suburb of Salt Lake City.“I get up every morning at 5:30 and get down here about 6 am,” Bob said.“We have a lousy retirement plan,” added Al with a chuckle.The co-owners mix together like peanut butter and jelly.“We get along good together,” Bob said. “We’ve never had an argument.”They say baking is in their blood.“My dad came over to this country in 1924 and this was the bakery,“ Al said pointing to and old black-and-white photo.The brothers were separated when Uncle Sam came calling.“In 1950, I got drafted for the Korean War, just started, so I pulled Bob out of high school and he took over at the bakery,” Al said. “When I came home, he left for two years to serve.”They have seen their fair share of change.“There isn’t really any little bakeries opened up anymore,” Al said. “They’re dropping by the wayside.”Since March, it’s not big box stores making business tough, it’s a new, bitter ingredient.“It was just after that virus hit,” Bob said. “We stayed open and never closed, but it’s been slow. There is just nobody coming in.”Owning a small business is tough, but COVID-19 is making it even harder.“We depend on all that business just what comes in the door,” Al said. “We aren’t getting those big orders anymore.”The brothers hope to keep making eclairs and fresh donuts for as many years as they can.“Hard work is what keeps us going and gives us something to do,” Al said.Now, the next generation is pitching in.“I love getting to work with my grandpa and great uncle,” said Conner Johnson. “They are amazing.”Bob and Al want to keep Carol’s Pastry Shop in the family.“I don’t know what’s gonna happen in the future,” Johnson said. “It’s hard to tell what’s going to happen even day by day now.”For now, the brothers plan on showing up every day.“COVID is not going to stop these guys,” Johnson said with a laugh.Al listened in and smiled.“You know, it’s like my father used to tell me; if you put in good work and good ingredients, then you always get a good product out of it,” Al said. “We’ve always used the best ingredients there is.” 2647

Demetria Poe posted on social media about her experience, and what passengers and crew members did next.Poe, who is Black, says she helped a white woman with her bag as the woman sat next to her on the plane. The woman swapped out her mask for one that said ‘Blue Lives Matter’ and sat back down next to Poe."That woman was trying to entice me into an argument because there was no need for her to flip that mask in my presence," Poe later told USA Today.According to Poe, after take-off, the woman said “I support blue lives because I support officers.”“I explained to her blue lives do not exist. All that Lizabeth Birnbaum of Seven Hills, Ohio wanted was a little peace while taking care of her elderly father, but instead, she says she's been traumatized by hundreds of robocalls since the beginning of the year.Birnbaum said it all started when she answered a phone questionnaire, the robocalls started ringing her home phone every day."It's horrible, horrible, and it's every day, morning, noon and night," said Birnbaum."And they're threatening me for money.""The 'do not call' really doesn't help with these robo guys, they know how to get around it."Birnbaum said she contacted her phone carrier, and it helped her set up blocks, but the robo caller just kept turning to other phone numbers."That's when I decided to contact the Federal Trade Commission and file a complaint," said Birnbaum.The FTC reports robocall complaints from Ohio have now reached more than 275,000 annually, more than doubling over the past three years.The FCC recently fined one telemarketer 0 million dollars for tricking consumers into answering robocalls.Cleveland BBB President, Sue McConnell, said consumers should still sign up for the "do not call registry," contact their phone carriers about phone number blocking, but the first line of defense is to ignore the calls, and don't engage the callers in a conversation."If you get a phone call, and you look at your caller ID, and you don't recognize that caller, don't answer it," said McConnell."Because if you answer, now you've confirmed that it's a valid phone number, and that you'll answer."Still, Birnbaum believes more federal investigators are needed to slow down the growing robocall epidemic."It's a shame because a lot of people are elderly, and they take advantage of elderly people," said Birnbaum."Something needs to be done, it's not fair someone should be invaded in their own homes."  1935

After aiming for a mid-July relaunch, AMC Theatres said on Monday that it is pushing back reopening nearly 75% of its US locations to July 30. AMC said it hopes to have its remaining locations reopened the following week. The theater chain shuttered most of its locations in March to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. The theater chain was planning to reopen locations in mid-July to account for the releases of potential blockbuster “Mulan” and “Tenet.” The release dates for those two movies have been pushed back into August.“We continue to devote extraordinary resources into our plan to operate our theatres with a hyper commitment to the safety and health of our guests and associates, notably in the United States through our new AMC Safe & Clean initiative,” Adam Aron, CEO & President, AMC Theatres wrote in a statement. “Our theatre general managers across the U.S. started working full time again today and are back in their theatres gearing up to get their buildings fully ready just a few weeks from now for moviegoers.
