As the COVID-19 vaccine makes its way across the country and into the hands of those who need it most, many nursing homes and senior communities are anxiously waiting as they are the most vulnerable.“I’m a true Okie from Muskogee, Oklahoma,” says 80-year-old Donna. After 46 years, she and her 83-year-old husband Art made the decision to leave the countryside and move into a senior community. They chose one of the 26 Arrow Senior Living communities that are housed around the Midwest. Things were great until the pandemic hit.“Since we live on the independent side, we do our own things. Until this COVID hit, we came and went as we wanted to,”she said.Their way of living is now completely different. No visits with their three sons. No extracurricular activities. They're diligent about masks and about the proper public health measures to prevent the virus.“It's a big concern, we know this is a killer,” Donna said. “Some get a light case and some are asymptomatic and you never who’s going to get the serious case.”Which is why she's anxiously waiting for the vaccine. She remembers when the polio vaccine came out and said it was wonderful."I don’t remember people questioning it, being afraid of having it so much then as some people today but I don’t know why they’d even question it with the horrible pandemic we’ve been having,” Donna said.Stephanie Harris, CEO of Arrow Senior Living said “absolutely” when asked if she would get the vaccine. Harris says her employees will get it too. In all, nearly 4,000 people between residents and staff will need to be vaccinated.“We have been blown away at how overwhelming the response has been by our resident group, over 90% of our residents, when we surveyed them, said ‘yes’ to vaccination,” says Harris. They're not first in line, but they're not far off. They have clinics scheduled for late December, and they're excited.“I’m tired of being cooped up and taking extraordinary precautions to ensure that I could be here in this seat to support our larger operation and I want to be able to get on with some sense of normal,” Harris said.Harris added this recent surge has been brutal and it's taking an emotional toll on everyone.Holiday gatherings have been canceled, important events missed during a time when grandparents should be spending with grandkids. It's caused Arrow Senior Living to take extraordinary precautions, deploying things like mask detection technology to determine whether face coverings are being utilized. There's not one community in their network that hasn't been touched by COVID-19.“This is going to be a strange Christmas, we’re accepting it,” Donna said. “We have three sons but they’re all doing their thing. They didn’t feel like it was safe to travel and we’ll be having Christmas here.” 2789

As millions of Americans avoid routine doctor’s appointments right now for fear of catching COVID-19, a decades-old practice is suddenly gaining new attention: the house call.“The notion of a house call means the care provider can get a more comprehensive view of you as a person,” explained Stacey Chang, who serves as the executive director for the Design Institute for Health.Chang says a reinvention of the house call could be a viable solution to America’s evolving post-coronavirus healthcare system. New portable technology means doctors can do more than just check your temperature.Health officials across the country are also worried that Americans in isolation are avoiding routine check-ups, which could lead to more long-term issues once the pandemic ends.“The care that didn’t happen, the routine care for managing chronic diseases, we may end up having greater mortality from those missed interventions than what COVID itself caused,” Chang added.Aside from keeping people away from hospitals where COVID-19 might be lurking, the house call gives physicians a chance to get to know their patients. Spending more than 10 minutes with someone in an office would give doctors a better chance to treat chronic diseases.“It’s really a relationship between the person that’s caring for you and the person you’re caring for,” Chang said. 1352

As the opioid crisis continues to damage communities across the country, new mapping technology is helping family members of victims cope by allowing them to crowdsource an interactive memorial. The "Celebrating Lost Loved Ones" map, created a couple of months ago, now marks the lives of thousands people lost to opioids. The map was created by engineer Jeremiah Lindemann and allows users to add photos and short stories of loved ones who have passed away, including the place of their passing. The goal of the map is to create a place to honor and respect overdose victims across the United States."(We want a map) that emphasizes the human toll behind the opioid crisis with a visual record of the victims it is leaving behind," Lindemann said. 764

As teachers report to work this week at Georgia’s largest school district, the Gwinnett County Public Schools, 260 of them tested positive or reported exposure to the coronavirus, according to multiple reports.Officials told CNN that most of the cases were likely through community spread. "As of last Thursday, we had approximately 260 employees who had been excluded from work due to a positive case or contact with a case," GCPS spokeswoman Sloan Roach told CNN. "This number is fluid as we continue to have new reports and others who are returning to work," she added. The district plans to reopen August 12 after shutting down in March. Nearly 160,000 students attend classes in Gwinnett County. The area saw a rise in coronavirus cases in July, according to public health data. The state of Georgia has averaged over 3,000 new coronavirus cases per day in the month of July."Given the number of COVID cases in Gwinnett we would expect to see positives among our employees based on the community spread in our county," Roach told CNN. 1045

At first, your loved one with Alzheimer's may not react well to wearing a mask or having to wash their hands consistently, but the Alzheimer's Foundation of America says there are things you can do to ensure they are safe during this time."You have to do your best to try, but you also have to be forgiving of yourself and understand that there are limits to what you can do. Some of the nice things about these masks are some of them can be lovely and fun. You can pick masks that have themes or that have resonance with that person," Dr. Allison B. Reiss with The Alzheimer's Foundation of America, told KIVI-TV.For those who don't like the consistent handwashing, Dr. Reiss says buying soaps with a fragrance can make a big difference and encourage them to wash their hands more often."I think a lot of us have that, that olfactory memory, so a scent that you enjoy brings such good feelings. Like cinnamon apple smells of apple pie and childhood, vanilla. You know many people love the scent of a warm home kitchen or the scent of outdoors and flowers and gardens and grass. So that very much goes into an emotional center and people like that," Dr. Reiss said.Throughout all of this, one thing to remember is to talk to your loved one who has Alzheimer's in a soothing tone."So we want to try and be that calm safety for them, a safe environment, a secure feeling, a feeling of routine and that everything is just as it should be so that there's not that agitation and panic," Dr. Reiss said.To get more information and tips on how to keep your loved ones safe during the pandemic, you can visit the Alzheimer's Foundation of America's website. This story was originally reported by Stephanie Garibay on kivitv.com. 1728
