BEIJING, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- The Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) summit concluded its first closed session here Friday evening, with the global financial crisis topping the agenda.     Leaders and representatives of the 45 ASEM members attended the meeting which lasted two hours.     Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao chaired the meeting and made the leading speech.     Wen called on Asian and European nations to make concerted effort in response to the global financial crisis triggered by the U.S. credit crunch, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry.     Wen said the international financial and economic situation is an issue linked up with the direct interests of all ASEM members, and that is why the issue was listed the top subject for discussion.     "Asian and European nations are an important force to safeguard international financial stability and promote world economic growth," Wen said. "We should make concerted effort to show the world our confidence, unity and cooperation," he added.     He said relevant countries and organizations have taken measures in response to the global financial crisis, and China hopes these measures would achieve the desired results soon.     He also called for global action to jointly respond to the crisis.     The leaders present at the meeting had an "enthusiastic and in-depth" discussion on how to tackle the crisis, as well as how to promote Asia-Europe trade and investment, the Foreign Ministry said, giving no further details.     The seventh ASEM summit, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, will all together have four closed sessions.

BEIJING, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President and member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau Xi Jinping Friday conferred certificates on graduates of the Party School of the CPC Central Committee.     Xi, also a member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee, heads the school.     Politburo member and director of the CPC Central Committee Organization Department Li Yuanchao and Ling Jihua, director of the General Office of the CPC Central Committee, both members of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee, also attended the graduation ceremony.     The ceremony marked the graduation of 577 Party officials from the Central Party School and more than 2,600 graduates from the school's branches.     The Party School of the CPC Central Committee is the highest institution for training high- and middle-ranking party officials and Maxist theoreticians. The School's history dates back to the school of Marxism and Communism set up in March 1933.

HAVANA, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Tuesday visited Fidel Castro, first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, in Havana.     The two leaders warmly shook hands, exchanged greetings and had a long conversation in a sincere and friendly atmosphere.     Hu said he was delighted to see Castro again. The comrades of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China "have all cared about your health and I brought their sincere greetings to you," he said.     "I see in person that you have recovered and have been energetic so I feel very pleased," he told Castro. BEIJING, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao held a telephone conversation with his U.S. counterpart Barack Obama on bilateral ties Friday, with both sides expressing the willingness to further the ties.     The Chinese president said China is ready to strengthen dialogue, promote mutual trust and expand cooperation with the United States in a bid to confront various global challenges together and push forward a stable development of the Sino-U.S. relationship.     Hu said the core interest of either country should be respected by each other and taken into consideration.     As the contagious financial crisis is still producing severe influence to national economies and people's lives, the international community should strengthen coordination and promote closer cooperation to stand up to the challenge, Hu said.     Describing the Sino-U.S. ties as the most important bilateral relations for both sides, Obama said enhancing bilateral constructive dialogue and cooperation is in the interest of not only the two countries themselves, but the world at large.     The U.S. side is expecting closer cooperation with China on major international and regional issues, he said, adding that the U.S. government is willing to join hands with China to develop a more active and constructive bilateral relationship.     Hu Jintao said China acknowledged U.S. efforts in stabilizing the financial market and stimulating the economy, adding that China is willing to further strengthen communication and coordination with the U.S. side in macroeconomic policies, and firmly oppose trade and investment protectionism.     Hu said China will join hands with the United States to work toward fruitful achievements in April's Group of 20 (G20) summit in London and promote healthy and stable development of the world economy and finance.     Obama said it is crucial for the United States and China, the two most important economies, to enhance cooperation.     Both sides exchanged visit invitations. CHENGDU, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- President Hu Jintao visited quake-hit Sichuan Province over the weekend, showing concern for survivors and inspecting reconstruction work as winter set in.     It was Hu's second visit after the May 12 earthquake. Hu's last visit was on May 16, when quake relief work was in a critical phase.     The 8.0-magnitude quake, centered in Wenchuan County, left more than 69,000 people dead, 374,000 injured, 18,000 missing and millions homeless.
