CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) -- The owner of The Coronado Flower Lady, a popular flower stand along Orange Avenue, is trying to rebuild after a suspected drunk driver destroyed her business. Coronado police say 22-year-old Elias Atayee is being charged with felony DUI after crashing his car into the stand. They say Atayee also had a female passenger inside his car. RELATED: Driver slams into Coronado pole, picnic tables“The fact that there are people drinking and driving, going 90-100 miles per hour, I have my kids out here with me all the time at work," owner Shanel Albert said. "There are tons of kids out here and people. If one of my girls would have been here during the day and that happened, they would have been dead. And that scares me.” Thanks to the City of Coronado, Albert will be back selling her flowers on a table in the same spot until she can permanently rebuild her stand. CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) — An Air Force pilot who was killed in Vietnam was honored on Tuesday with an official U.S Air Force Memorial Flyover in Coronado.His widow also honored for her years of work, fighting for prisoners of war and those missing in action to be acknowledged. Colonel Arthur "Art" S. Mearns' plane was shot down in 1966, but for 11 years his wife and daughters didn't know if he had been taken as a POW or if he had been killed.LONGFORM: Teachers turn Marine Recruits, providing perspective for studentsDuring those 11 years of not knowing, his wife wrote letters and visited congressmen, reminding them of all the men who were still unaccounted for. Today, Colonel Mearns' wife and daughters were on hand for the ceremony. COVINGTON, Ky. -- At least three Northern Kentucky school districts will be closed Monday after state lawmakers rushed through a pension overhaul plan.Covington Independent, Boone County and Kenton County schools confirmed they'll be closed April 2.Covington spokesperson Deb Vance said 180 of 271 teachers called to say they're taking a personal day on Monday. The day will have to be made up later, she said. In Boone County, Superintendent Randy Poe said a day off will let teachers and families travel to Frankfort."Drastic times call for drastic action," Poe said in a letter to parents. "Although closing school is the last thing anyone wants to do, one of the reasons for this decision to close school is because educators feel one of their main responsibilities is to advocate for the children of the Commonwealth."The bill passed Thursday night preserves benefits for current retirees. Most benefits for current workers would also be preserved, but sick days would be capped after this year and will not be applied toward retirement. Some teachers would also have to increase the amount they pay to fund retiree health.However, future teachers would not be guaranteed a set pension when they retire, and would instead use a hybrid 401(k) plan that requires them to contribute more. 1298
