SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A sea of purple covered Mission Bay Park as thousands showed up to ride, run and walk for epilepsy awareness.The event is Sharon's Ride, Run, Walk.  Sharon’s Ride was started by Dr. William Rosenfeld honor Dr. Rosenfeld’s sister, Sharon,  who was killed in a bicycle accident while bicycling cross country. She was also a nurse and teacher who cared deeply about epilepsy. Dr. Rosenfeld is the chairman of the event nationwide.   Participants could choose from a 15-mile bike ride or a 5k run or walk around Mission Bay.   The money raised benefits the Epilepsy Foundation of San Diego County.   678

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A stranger helped a woman through a flight from San Diego to Nashville in a random act of kindness caught on camera. Megan Schofield was on the Southwest plane and told 10News what she noticed. The flight had just started to take off when Schofield saw an elderly woman tightly clutching a young man’s arm. “Upon take-off, she mentioned she hadn't flown in 15 years and she was scared, and she said to the gentleman “Take my hand”, and he grabbed her hand,” Schofield said. Schofield discovered the woman was 96 years old and flying to celebrate her birthday with family across the country. “Seeing that, I told the gentleman I would want somebody to treat my grandmother the way you treated her.” Schofield posted the moment on Facebook, where it went viral. “Sometimes we're just so caught up in the hustle and bustle that we don't always see who needs help.” The man in the photo, identified only as Ben, emailed Schofield, saying he was happy such a simple moment could be so important to so many people. Schofield was inspired to pay it forward. “Yesterday on my flight home, a lady about the age of my mom… I could tell she was a little bit worried. She said “I don't fly, I drive” so I walked her to her gate and she gave me a big hug.” The elderly woman who received help from the young man is named Virginia, but we don’t know her exact identity. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A tow truck driver helped San Diego Police capture a man who the driver said was starting a fire Thursday along Interstate 15 in central San Diego.Police said the tow truck driver reported the man near the 15 and 94 freeways in Mount Hope about 1 p.m.Officers handcuffed the man and placed him inside a patrol car, but he managed to get out of his restraints. Police said he fought back and they removed him from the car to restrain him again.“The gentleman attempted to bite two of the officers on their hands as they were attempting to place him in the body wrap system,” said SDPD Sgt. Nathan Chambers.Arson investigators who responded to the fire scene found charred wood and grass. There was no evidence of a large fire.10News asked police if the man is connected to other recent fires in the area but officers said that has not been determined. The man was not charged with arson Thursday. 932

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Scripps Ranch woman who contacted Team 10 about problems with her Samsung refrigerator is now receiving a full refund after Team 10’s story aired.Stephanie Nivinskus bought her Samsung french door refrigerator in December 2014. It cost her nearly ,000. She said she had issues roughly six months after she bought it. "It's been a headache since the beginning," Nivinskus told Team 10 in September.The first problem was the ice maker does not function properly, according to Nivinskus."The ice just gathers and collects up there. It makes it so it doesn't work," Nivinskus said.She also has issues with the temperature of the refrigerator. The FDA says a safe temperature inside a refrigerator is 40 degrees or below. During the initial interview with Team 10, the thermometer inside of Nivinskus' refrigerator read about 56 degrees."Having spoiled food is a real problem," she said. Shortly after, a full refund for her refrigerator was processed.“Thank you so much for helping us because fighting by myself, I was getting a whole lot of nowhere,” Nivinskus said.Samsung is currently facing a class-action lawsuit regarding the broken ice makers. There are also more than 5,400 people in a Facebook group demanding a recall of Samsung refrigerators.In an email, a Samsung spokesperson told Team 10 in response to the initial story: "At Samsung we stand behind all of our products, including our refrigerators, and want to ensure our customers are completely satisfied. If a customer encounters any problem with their product or service, we encourage them to reach out to us directly at 1-800-SAMSUNG so we can provide assistance."Nivinskus said she spoke to customer service before contacting Team 10.
