(KGTV) — Back to school time usually means it's time for a new backpack.Nowadays there are tons of choices in how kids can lug around their belongings. Rolling backpacks, shoulder sling options, or the traditional two-strap pack. But which one is right for them?Will it support their back? Stay together through the school year? Does it look good? These are some of the questions parents grapple with in the middle of shopping aisles.MORE: 10News back to school resources for parentsA study by UC San Diego researchers found that children commonly carry about 10 to 20 percent of their body weight in backpacks, which is also the limit recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics.UCSD researchers tested the correlation between backpack weight and a child's back pain. They tested a group of 8 children and measured spinal pressure at three different amounts of backpack weight meant to mimic 10, 20, and 30 percent of their weight.They found that as the weight of the backpack load increases, back pain in children increases and spinal disc height shrinks as lumbar asymmetry grows.Which brings us back to the original question: How do you make sure a backpack is right for a child? Shoulder straps should be wide and padded to help distribute the pack's weight evenly, according to the website Healthy Children. Abdominal straps also help distribute weight across the waist, hips, and back.It's also recommended not to wear backpacks on only one shoulder, which shifts all that weight and leads to neck and back pain.Wearing it rightThe top of a backpack should sit one to two inches below the top of the shoulders. Also, the pack should not sit more than four inches below the waistline.The bottom of the backpack should align with the curve of the lower back.Preventing injury on the goWhile at school, its important for kids to be careful while lugging around their backpack. If possible, students should stop by their lockers often to unload any unneeded gear from their backpack. If bending down, kids should use both of their knees while wearing a backpack and not bend at the waist.Learning back-strengthening exercises can also help build up muscles primarily used while carrying weight.Consult a pediatrician if necessaryTalking with your child's doctor about back health is vital. Speak with your child as well about being vocal about back discomfort. (KGTV) - A former Veterans of Foreign Wars official is in custody in Bakersfield on suspicion of sex crimes which alleged victims say started in San Diego. Timothy Machin, 51, was arrested on July 2 and is currently being held on ,000,000 bail. The VFW confirmed to Scripps affiliate KERO that Machin was the commander of VFW Post 97 in Bakersfield. According to the police report, one person estimated that Machin had sex with her "almost 1,700 times." There are also multiple victims, according to the report. Child Protetctive Services was called by one of the alleged victims on July 1. CPS contacted Bakersfield Police on the same day to report the allegations. One alleged victim told Bakersfield Police that Machin forced her to perform oral sex on him during some of the encounters. The same person someone walked into the room one time when Machin was having sex with her. The alleged victim said Machin and the other person argued, but nothing happened beyond the argument, according to the documents. The accusers told investigators that the abuse started when Machin lived in San Diego. Machin moved to Bakersfield from San Diego in 2009. One alleged victim told police she didn't come forward sooner because previous reports of abuse went unheeded and she thought reporting the "incident would be meaningless." Machin resigned the position of commander July 10, according to Wayne Wright, who has taken over command of the post. He added that Machin is still a member of the VFW Post. Wright declined to comment on the allegations because it is an active investigation. Wright said the commander position is the top-ranking official at a VFW Post. Machin was arraigned on Friday, July 5, and pleaded not guilty. He's been charged with two counts of incest and three counts of lewd or lascivious acts with a child under the age of 14. Not the aliens, but the alien enthusiasts.Almost 2 million people clicked the "going" button on a Facebook page set up by a California man seeking to storm Area 51, the super-secret military base in Nevada, to "see them aliens." The date for this "raid" is Friday.The page's creator disavowed the whole thing and Facebook took down the page, but events are still planned, and that's led officials in Nevada to worry that thousands of people really will try to get onto the base, potentially creating a crisis situation in the middle of the desert.The creator underestimated the allureMatty Roberts was just joking. He didn't believe anyone would take him seriously when, on June 27, he created a Facebook page for an event entitled "Storm Area 51, They Can't Stop All of Us."But Roberts may have underestimated the allure of Area 51, the highly classified US Air Force base in southern Nevada. It's long been a topic of fascination for conspiracy theorists and paranormal enthusiasts who believe it to be the location where the US government stores and hides alien bodies and UFOs. Just this week, the US Navy acknowledged that some videos of UFOs are indeed images of objects that can't be identified.Roberts said he came up with the idea for the meme page after podcaster Joe Rogan interviewed Area 51 whistleblower Bob Lazar and filmmaker Jeremy Corbell. Lazar claims that he worked with an alien spacecraft while he was employed in one of Area 51's underground facilities.The Air Force didn't see the joke in any of this and promised to stand "ready to protect America and its assets," so Roberts switched tactics. He started promoting a music festival, Alienstock, to be held this weekend in Rachel, Nevada, one of the closest towns to the base. The inn has 14 rooms, and camping space is now the last available option.To make matters worse, Rachel's only gas station closed in 2006, so visitors will have to fill their tanks 50 miles away in Alamo, Nevada.Even a thousand visitors to the area could put a strain on emergency services, Lincoln County Sheriff Kerry Lee told CNN last month."We could probably handle it, but it could definitely cause issues. Heaven forbid the number is 5,000 people where you almost double the size of the county," he said.But the number of people isn't even Lee's main concern. He said exposure to the environment is what he is worried about."I could see people with a lot of heat-related issues, and with our limited resources up here it could definitely jeopardize their safety.
