NEW YORK CITY — Mayor Bill de Blaiso suggested that the snow day as we know it may be gone due to remote learning, as the city prepares for what could be it's biggest snow storm in years. The mayor announced that all schools, including in-person learning, would be open Wednesday. The mayor cited expectations that the storm will not begin to hit New York City until 4 p.m. School buses will also be in use. "School will be in session Wednesday," de Blasio said. "We do not expect the snow to even begin until school is complete tomorrow." On Thursday, there will be classes one way or the other. While the decision has not yet been made on in-person learning, all students will have the option of remote learning for Thursday regardless of how much snow the area gets.De Blasio suggested parents have an alternative ready for Thursday. NIPAWIN, Saskatchewan (AP) — Canadian police said early Saturday 14 people were killed and 14 people were injured after a truck collided with a bus carrying a junior hockey team to a playoff game in Western Canada.Police say there were 28 people, including the driver, on board the bus of the Humboldt Broncos team when the crash occurred around 5 p.m. Friday on Highway 35 in Saskatchewan."We can now confirm fourteen people have died as a result of this collision," The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said in a release early Saturday."The other fourteen people were sent to hospitals with a variety of injuries; three of these people have injuries that are critical in nature."No names were released, and police would not say whether players or coaches were among the dead. There was no mention of the truck driver.The team president said parents from across Western Canada were rushing to the scene as they struggled to cope with the tragedy."It's one of the hardest days of my life," said Kevin Garinger. "There have been multiple fatalities — our whole community is in shock, we are grieving and we will continue to grieve throughout this ordeal as we try to work toward supporting each other."Michelle Straschnitzki, who lives in Airdrie, said her 18-year old son Ryan had been taken to a hospital in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan."We talked to him, but he said he couldn't feel his lower extremities so I don't know what's going on," she said. NEW YORK (AP) — Twitter has blocked a post from an adviser to President Donald Trump who suggested that masks do not work to stop the spread of coronavirus. Scott Atlas joined the White House in August as a science adviser. He had tweeted “Masks work? NO.” The post said widespread use of masks is not supported. It was blocked Sunday. A Twitter spokesperson says the tweet violated a company policy that prohibits sharing false or misleading misinformation about COVID-19. New York, New Jersey and Connecticut are imposing a 14-day quarantine on incoming travelers from states with a high transmission rate of the coronavirus."We worked really hard to get the viral transmission rate down, and we don't want to see it go up," New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said. "So we are jointly instituting that travel advisory today."The travel advisory will apply to states with two criteria: States that have an infection rate above 10 cases per 100,000 people and states where 10% of the total population test positive. NEW YORK (AP) — Mail-in voting has gotten off to a rocky start in New York City, where election officials sent out a large number of absentee ballots with the wrong names and addresses on the return envelopes.The faulty ballots were sent to an unknown number of voters in Brooklyn and could result in ballots being voided if voters sign their own name on return envelopes bearing different names. More than 140,000 ballots have already been sent out so far across the borough. It was unclear how many people got the wrong envelopes.The city Board of Elections is blaming the problem on the vendor that was contracted to print and mail the ballots for voters in Brooklyn and Queens. Board of Elections head Michael J. Ryan says the proper ballots and envelopes will get to voters before the Nov. 3 election.But it’s unclear exactly how the city will handle voters who had already mailed their completed ballot back in the provided envelopes.Ryan said elections workers will reach out to voters by social media and, if available, by telephone and email addresses. And he said the board will ensure all received ballots are “appropriately processed” and tallied votes are “properly credited” to voters. 1207
