HOUSTON, Texas -- Police engaged a driver in a prolonged slow-motion chase along Houston highways Thursday morning.According to KTRK, the chase started after a 911 call to a disturbance. The suspect reportedly pistol whipped a woman and fled when police arrived.Police believed the suspect might have been armed during the pursuit.The chase started out as a high-speed chase. But when the SUV suffered a flat tire, the driver briefly stopped on the highway before proceeding at very slow speeds.Several miles later, the driver again pulled over and the SUV was surrounded by authorities.  Yet somehow the SUV was able to drive away again.After another brief chase, a patrol car performed a PIT maneuver to stop the SUV for good.Officers surrounded the vehicle and pulled the driver out.The driver was removed from the scene on a stretcher. 872

Documents obtained by The Associated Press show a private contractor hired by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is taking children to three Hampton Inns in Arizona and Texas under restrictive border policies implemented during the coronavirus pandemic. The hotels have been used nearly 200 times, while more than 10,000 beds for children sit empty at government shelters. Federal anti-trafficking laws and a two-decade-old court settlement that governs the treatment of migrant children require that most kids be sent to the shelters for eventual placement with family sponsors. But President Donald Trump’s administration is now immediately expelling people seeking asylum in the U.S., relying on a public health declaration to set aside those rules.Lawyers and advocates say housing unaccompanied migrant children in hotels exposes them to the risk of trauma as they’re detained in places not designed to hold them and cared for by contractors with unclear credentials. They are challenging the use of hotels as detention spaces under the Flores court settlement.Federal immigration authorities say the contractors caring for the kids are “non-law enforcement staff members trained to work with minors.”Hilton, which owns the Hampton Inn brand, said in a statement Tuesday that all three hotels were franchises and it believed rooms were booked directly with those owners. In an election year in the middle of a global coronavirus pandemic, a new study finds the majority of Americans, about 80 percent, are confident in-person polling places will be run safely.Survey respondents also seem to agree that it is important for Americans to learn who won the election within a day or two of Election Day, about 82 percent, but only about 50 percent feel confident this will actually happen.Other questions asked on a recent Pew Research Center study appear to have strong partisan divisions.When it comes to being confident about in-person versus mail-in ballots being counted, overall 90 percent of respondents feel good about in-person ballots being counted as voters intended.The confidence in mail-in ballots being counted as voters intended differs; just 37 percent of those who support President Donald Trump say they are confident in mail-in ballots, compared to 77 percent of those who support Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden.These feelings lead to a 30-point difference in which supporters are planning to cast their ballot in person on Election Day; 50 percent of Trump supporters say they will vote in-person, while just 20 percent of Biden supporters say they will.Roughly 20 percent of both Trump supporters and Biden supporters reported they had already voted or planned to vote in-person during their state’s early voting.The sides also differ on their feelings about how Election Day will be administered around the country. In a scene reminiscent to what played out in Minneapolis on Memorial Day, Oklahoma City Police released video of a May 2019 incident of a man dying while in police custody.Body worn camera video was released to the public this week.The video shows as officers attempted to place him in handcuffs, Derrick Scott told officers multiple times “I can’t breathe,” a line that George Floyd used moments before he died in Minneapolis. One of the officers responded to Scott, “I don’t care.”The video shows officers struggling to place Scott in handcuffs.Unlike in the Floyd incident, the only video available from last May’s incident was from body camera footage.The May 2019 incident began on a call of a black man carrying a gun. After police arrived, officers talked to Scott. The body cam footage then showed officers chasing a fleeing Scott.Officers caught up to him and tackled Scott. Two officers straddled Scott until a third officer arrived and told Scott to stop resisting.It took all three officers to bring Scott into custody. An officer continued to hold a knee against Scott’s leg.Scott then didn’t say anything for four minutes, which prompted officers to call for EMTs. Scott died an hour later. An official autopsy stated that Scott had a collapsed lung at the time of his death, but did not give the manner for his death.The officers were cleared of wrongdoing. 1380
