DESCANSO, Calif. (KGTV) — A Descanso man has finished carving a Buddha statue into a granite boulder in his backyard. “Buddha is in every tree just looking at you like every rock,” said artist Duncan McFetridge. “It’s connected to our saving our environment — all life is sacred.” Duncan McFetridge says it took six months to carve the 6-foot tall Buddha into the granite. “It occurred to me that this was a perfect time and place to carve a representation of Buddha,” added McFetridge, who was heavily involved in the preservation of the Cleveland National Forest. He estimates he chipped away more than 750 pounds using a combination of hand tools and power tools on the stone carving while working in 4-hour increments every day. “These are incredibly difficult,” said McFetridge pointing to cinnamon roll-sized circles adorning the carving's head, “each one takes about a day.” The 78-year-old says someone recently visited and figured out the Buddha carving faces due east, sticking with an ancient tradition of Buddha statues facing east to represent the moment of the enlightenment. “I didn’t know, I was totally unconscious of this,” said McFetridge, who adds he just picked the rock face because of its accessibility.McFetridge says hundreds have already inquired about visiting the statue to which he says he encourages it. “The Buddha wants to be known,” said McFetridge. 1390

DALLAS, Ga. — A Georgia high school plans to start the week with all classes shifting online after nine students and staff tested positive for the coronavirus as the school year opened with in-person classes last week.News outlets report all students at North Paulding High School west of Atlanta will take online classes Monday and Tuesday.Paulding County Schools Superintendent Brian Ott sent a letter to parents Sunday saying those two days will be used to clean and disinfect the school.Ott disclosed Saturday that six students and three staff had tested positive for the virus.The school made headlines last week with photos posted to social media that showed hallways crowded with students who weren't wearing masks.Hannah Watters, a student who posted photos of the school’s crowded halls, was suspended for her actions, but the punishment was later lifted.Since posting the photos and making headlines, Watters says she has received threats. The sophomore told CNN that she and her loved ones have been sent screenshots of group chats with threatening language against her.Watters believes much of the school’s staff supports her actions, but some of her fellow students don’t."I feel like a lot of teachers have my back because they know how dangerous it is going to school,” she told CNN. “But I know that a lot of the kids I go to school with, I've already gotten backlash for it. I've gotten threats and things like that, but I know that I'm doing the right thing and I, and it's not going to stop me from continuing doing it, but it is concerning, especially since it's a lot of the people I go to school with, people I've known for years now, that are threatening me now." 1694

(KGTV) - The California Thoroughbred Racing Board postponed a vote on the use of riding crops at their meeting Thursday.The board was scheduled to vote on the issue but decided to move it to the December meeting.Two different versions of the regulation have been proposed.One would allow jockeys to hold a crop during race, but would disqualify the horse if the jockey used the crop to whip the horse during a race.The second version broadens the acceptable use of the crop to include “tapping of the neck” and for use in directing the horse without contact, but would still not permit a jockey to raise the crop to forcefully whip a horse.Del Mar Thoroughbred Club CEO, Joe Harper, said he supports the phaseout of whips.“I’m hopeful we can get to a point where the whip is not used at all,” said Harper. “It’s a horrible visual.” 855

DENVER, Colorado — Candidates and political parties are desperate to reach voters as Election Day approaches but one method feels a little more personal. Text messages are being used to target voters, and if you've been inundated, you're not alone. "But it is a little kind of like how do you have my phone number," said Andrew Drysdale, a voter who called the texts unsettling. Colorado Secretary of State Wayne Williams said his office has received numerous phone calls and emails about the text messages. Some of his own staff members have also received them."They're allowed to do it as long as they're following the law," said Williams.The FCC has specific rules about campaign-related robocalls and texts, stating they cannot be sent to a cell phone "without the called party's prior express consent." "There are ways that they use to try and avoid some of the legal restrictions on it by having a live person as one of the steps, so it's not automated," said Williams.On top of that, he adds the Do Not Call Registry does not apply to political calls.Williams says you can visit govotecolorado.com to make sure your cell phone number is not attached to your voter registration. DETROIT — Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan was packed with people for Michelle Obama’s book tour Tuesday night.Although, before she hit the big stage, the former first lady made a visit to the famous Motown Museum, where a group of college students were surprised when she walked through the door.The group of teenagers, ages 18 and younger, all attend Wayne State University. They were at a forum to discuss various topics such as education, culture issues, goals and overcoming obstacles.The event moderator was actor, comedian and Detroit-native Keegan-Michael Key.
