College students rely on internships to give them hands-on experience before graduating and going into the workforce. However, this year, 22% or nearly one in four college students had their summer internships canceled because of the pandemic, according to a survey done by the National Association of Colleges and Employers.“I was supposed to work with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this summer, working full-time for about 10 weeks,” said Purdue University junior Patrick Haimbaugh. “I was really excited about it, but it did get canceled.”Fortunately for Haimbaugh, when his internship fell through, a company called TechPoint was seeing how many students were losing internships and decided it wanted to help.“It felt like I had a second chance, like the summer wasn’t just going to be a blowout,” said Haimbaugh.“We thought you know what based on our organization, position and where we sit in the community, this is an area where we can make a difference,” said Mike Langellier, the CEO of TechPoint.TechPoint normally has a summer internship program that helps about 100 students, but in the wake of the wave of internship cancellations, it decided to create a second summer internship program for five times as many students. The new program was practically created overnight and called the SOS Challenge.“Their task is over the course of five weeks to come up with a product prototype and a go-to market strategy aimed at one of nine different challenge topics, and they are all COVID related,” said Langellier. “So, they include things like tele-health, outbreak detections, restaurants and small businesses.”TechPoint got 56 other companies and more than 250 tech professionals to commit to helping with the SOS Challenge interns. Beyond the networking and mentorships, TechPoint setup the internship to have ,000 prize for the group with the best prototype and arranged for the group to get an award from Indiana’s governor.“We are excited to be able to make a difference amidst challenging times for so many people,” said Langellier.With unemployment rates so high, college graduates are entering one of the most competitive jobs markets ever. CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. — A Florida family says they were recently targeted by a terrifying kidnapping scam.Katie and Steve Watson live in Coral Springs, Florida and want to warn families about the crime.Katie tells WPTV that she received a call on Monday from a number she didn’t recognize. On the line she heard a whimpering child, then a mysterious man say he had kidnapped Katie’s daughter, Chloe."All of a sudden a man's voice came on the line, and he said, 'Katie I have your daughter. She's in the back of my van,' " Watson told WPTV on Tuesday.Katie said she quickly hung up, feeling in her gut that it was scam. "That's really part of what gave me the chills was somebody calling me by my name," said Watson. "That was unsettling."Katie says she figured it was a scam, but then got a bad feeling when she checked her daughter’s location through her phone's GPS.It initially said her daughter was at Westglades Middle School in Parkland, which Chloe attends. But then the GPS suddenly jumped to another location in Parkland.Upon further investigation, the Watsons found that her daughter was indeed at school, and more importantly, safe."I got chills all over my body and I was like, OK, I know that was a scam but that's like every parent's worst nightmare is to hear your kid has been kidnapped," said Watson.The FBI calls this a virtual kidnapping scam and says it’s evolved over the years and become more sophisticated.In the calls, a crook says he’s kidnapped your loved one and demands money in exchange for their safe return.In the Watsons' case, however, the scam was taken to a frightening new level with the use of a whimpering child on the line.The FBI offers these tips so you don’t become a victim: 1748
Commercial construction is experiencing a huge downtown and has yet to recover since it dipped at the start of the pandemic. But in contrast, residential construction is experiencing historic demands.“It's been a remarkable year for housing,” said Robert Dietz, chief economist for the National Association of Home Builders.When the pandemic hit, no one was sure what the impact would be on housing.“People need larger homes; they need to fix up their existing homes and frankly there’s not enough inventory on the marketplace so builders are really busy right now,” Dietz said.So busy, in fact, that some are deciding to buy new homes rather than wait for their projected renovation to start. The NAHB is a trade association with 140,000 members who handle all facets of family construction.“We’re looking this year, we think single family construction will be up almost 10% and that will make it the best year for single-family home building since the Great Recession itself,” Dietz said.But that doesn't, by any means, put anyone in a "perfect" position.“There are headwinds on the horizon and the industry has faced a number of persistent challenges that have reduced housing affordability,” Dietz said. “Those would include the persistent lack of skilled labor, lack of lots in high-demand markets, and of course regulatory costs have been a persistent thorn in the side of the industry causing costs to be higher and pricing out home buyers out of the market.”When demand goes up, supply goes down. Lumber prices are at an all-time high. It's taking months for builders to get their materials and supplies, and people are finding themselves stuck.“It can be a frustrating marketplace because you have those historically low interest rates that you want to take advantage of, you’re looking for more space given the changes to telework and all the factors that have changed as a result of the virus but there’s not the inventory there to meet the demand in front of the industry,” said Dietz.Ken Simonson, chief economist for the Associated General Contractors of America, was asked whether some are considering moving into the residential sector because it's doing so much better than the commercial side. He said, "Home building is really a different market."Simonson said the contractors in his organization do “apartment buildings, every type of non-residential building, infrastructure, highways, water and sewer systems, power plants and so forth.” He said contractors across the national saw an initial rebound, but it's been on a steady decline since the spring.“Non-residential construction, there’s a lot of doubt about whether there’s going to be demand for more stores or offices and whether owners whether they’re private or universities or state and local governments have the money to pay for them,” Simonson said.He says it's different in every state and region. Some niche industries are doing okay, like data centers, and the fields of medical device and health care. But most industries, like hotel and retail, for instance, have just about disappeared.“I have to say I’m pessimistic the construction industry is going to lag the overall economy,” Simonson said. “There are hopeful signs about the economy being able to pick up speed in 2021 if enough people get vaccinated and the vaccine proves to be effective.”Construction tends to take a while to bounce back.
