WASHINGTON (AP) — No one budged at President Donald Trump's White House meeting with congressional leaders Wednesday, so the partial government shutdown persisted through a 12th day over his demand for billions of dollars to build a wall along the U.S. border with Mexico. They'll try again Friday.In one big change, the new Congress convenes Thursday with Democrats taking majority control of the House, and Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi said outside the White House that there would be rapid passage of legislation to re-open the government — without funds for the border wall. VISTA (KGTV) – One person is dead and four more injured after three motorcycles crashed in Vista Saturday night.The crash happened at the intersection of Monte Mar Road and East Vista Way around 6:30 p.m. The motorcyclist who died is 55, but authorities did not release his name.Deputies say at least three motorcycles and one car were involved in the crash. All of the motorcyclists are part of the same club.Deputies say three Harley’s crashed with a Toyota Camry. Authorities don’t believe drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash. 544

VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Students at Rancho Minerva Middle School in Vista are sending love to a city still grieving after a mass shooting. Jessica Ward, a 6th and 8th-grade teacher at Minerva, was inspired to act after seeing a Facebook post:"Hello. We are teachers in El Paso. We would like to know if anyone is interested in sending us postcards to help our students know there is plenty of good in our world. As teachers, we may only be able to say so much. We think concrete messages of support would help us calm some fears. Any thoughts?"Ward and her more than 160 students got to work, creating letters filled with love, support, funny jokes, and positivity. "I just hope this small little gesture will bring happiness and positivity to their lives," said Ward. Ward also showed the students news clips of the tragedy, answering questions about what happened less than a month ago. "It's just something I like to be open about, so they understand that it's important to talk about. It's not something that should be silenced, it's something that everyone should be aware of, and part of the fight is talking about it," said Ward. Ralph Northam said in a statement that workers removed the statue from the National Statuary Hall Collection early Monday.“The Confederacy is a symbol of Virginia’s racist and divisive history, and it is past time we tell our story with images of perseverance, diversity, and inclusion,” said Northam.Each state is entitled to display two statues in the collection. Lee’s statue had stood with George Washington’s statue since 1909 as Virginia’s representatives in the Capitol.The Lee statue had been one among 13 located in the Crypt of the Capitol, representing the 13 original colonies.Northam had requested its removal and a state commission has recommended replacing Lee’s statue with a likeness of Barbara Johns.Johns was an American civil rights leader who protested poor conditions at her all-Black high school in the town of Farmville in 1951. Her court case became part of a landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision that struck down racial segregation in public schools.Virginia’s General Assembly must approve the replacement before a sculptor can be commissioned for the new statue. WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump traveled to Kenosha, Wisconsin, on Tuesday -- a city still reeling from social unrest following the shooting of Jacob Blake. Democratic Nominee Joe Biden has not visited yet although he said he was looking into it on Monday. Trump's visit to Kenosha comes days after the president stopped in Louisiana following the landfall of Hurricane Laura. But do presidential visits during a crisis help or hurt the community? "If I was doing his security, I would advise against it," Grant Whitus, a retired SWAT team leader in Colorado said. Whitus has protected presidents in the past and is a Trump supporter. Whitus says when a president comes to town, hundreds of officers need to be reassigned. "Their resources are already stretched to the max trying to deal with this," Whitus added. Many Wisconsin leaders feel the same way. Gov. Tony Evers (D) of Wisconsin wrote to the president unsuccessfully asking him to cancel his trip. Visits to areas in crisis have been a signature of Trump's since taking office. During his 2016 campaign, Trump visited Louisiana and their flood devastation a full four days before siting President Barack Obama made the trip. When asked if Trump was visiting Kenosha for political reasons, White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said no. "The president is showing up to see hurting Americans," McEnany said.
