SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Pacific Beach bartender was sucker-punched by a man he said refused to wear a face mask.Tony Aversa, bar lead at 710 Beach Club, said he was working on Saturday, Sept. 5, when he noticed a confrontation at the door around 7 p.m.He says he walked over to the three men and, "I just asked them to please put on a mask and I'll happily help you with whatever you need ... The guy just refused and continued to argue blatantly within inches of my face with no mask on."A female bartender walked over and Aversa said the man shoved her, so he put himself between the man and his coworker.That's when Aversa said another member of the combative group came running."He was walking away at the time and came running back down the sidewalk and blind-sided me with a punch ... Immediately, you could tell my nose was broken, I was gushing blood and I knew immediately what had happened, I kinda spun around and asked one of my employees to call the cops," Aversa said.He said an officer was there within a few minutes and walked with him, finding one of the men. Bystanders said the man who threw the punch got into a car and sped off.Police describe the man as Pacific Islander, 6'2", 260 lbs., with curly brown hair, and wearing a white t-shirt and dark basketball shorts.When we asked if Aversa had anything to say to the man, he said no. "I just want to see him put to justice at this point," says Aversa.Aversa will be seeing a surgeon later this week for his broken nose. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A sailboat caught fire Sunday around 2:45 p.m. at Shelter Cove Marina, witnesses say a lithium battery in the navigation panel started the blaze."Saw the smoke, thought it was a barbecue then the kids started screaming on the dock and saw the black smoke and knew it was time to react," Boater and Witness Charlie Colson said. He said he grabbed a hose and was helping the father who was on the boat when the fire started. Getting a boat fire put out quickly is crucial, Witness and Boater Murad Abel said. "There's a lot of electrical equipment, you have batteries, you have fuel, propane, it's all probably within 10 feet of each other," he said.Colson said they had it under control by the time firefighters made it to the scene. "The nine minutes probably seemed like 27 to me, because I was putting the fire out, and I wanted some help, I wanted a professional there," He said chuckling.He said the family had just moved onto the boat last week. "You could literally come back 2 hours later and he's still fishing trying to get fish off the back of the boat, so he's very diligent in that," Abel said.They're hoping insurance covers the damage. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A person is back in ICE custody and in isolation after they were taken to Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center to be evaluated for possible coronavirus symptoms.The individual was in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement when officials determined the person needed to be taken to Sharp Chula Vista, the county said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A near decade-long push to get a traffic light installed at a residential intersection along Governor Drive is inching closer to success.The city has partially funded the light at the intersection of Lakewood Street and Governor Dr. and it's now in the design phase. The news comes almost nine years after resident Mark Powell complained to the city about speeding drivers. Powell received a letter from the city in April 2010 that acknowledged a safety issue and said the intersection would be placed on its "priority list" for a traffic light, pending funding. "If you're put on a priority list, and it's been a decade, you're obviously not a priority," Powell said. "They've failed on multiple levels to get this completed."The intersection is on a long stretch of Governor Dr. that leads from Genesee Avenue to the 805. It has a 35 mile-per-hour speed limit, but there is no traffic light or stop sign to slow drivers as they pass Lakewood St. "By copy of this letter we will request that the police department consider this location for radar enforcement," the city said in the 2010 letter. Meanwhile, Powell says the safety issue is getting worse because University City is going through a building boom. The area is seeing new high rises, plus the expansion of the Westfield UTC mall. Powell's daughter, Arielle, 16, just got her driver's license and commutes to University City High School daily, making a left onto Governor from Lakewood. It's the only road that leads out of the neighborhood. "I get nervous in the morning because I don't want to be late for school having to wait for all of these people, because traffic on Genesee builds up really fast," Arielle said.
