BEIJING, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese experts on Tuesday refuted claims by the Pentagon released in a report that China is developing cyberwarfare capabilities, saying that the U.S. military was attempting to blacken China's image."I've never heard about any plans by China to develop its cyber attack forces, not to mention China's so-called 'organized cyber intrusion," Hu Qiheng, president of the Internet Society of China (ISC) told Xinhua on the sidelines of the China Internet Conference, which opened here Tuesday."It is a mere fabrication that China is using computer technologies to intrude on other countries' sovereignty," Hu said.The Chinese expert's comments came after the U.S. Department of Defense concluded early Tuesday in its annual assessment report sent to the U.S. Congress that "China is fielding...cyberwarfare capabilities to hold targets at risk throughout the region.""The U.S. purpose (of releasing such a report) is to tarnish China's image and exaggerate the threat China poses," Hu said.The U.S. was the top country of cyber attack origin in 2008, accounting for 25 percent of worldwide activity, according to a report by U.S. security firm Symantec.The ISC said more than 1 million Internet Protocol addresses in China were controlled by overseas hackers while 42,000 Chinese websites were tampered or hacked in 2009.Ni Feng, deputy director of the Institute of American Studies with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said the United States has greatly outstripped any other country in terms of Internet technological power."As the source of Internet technology, the United States enjoys the most advanced Internet technologies and equipment in the world," Ni said, "thus it makes no sense and is beyond my comprehension for the United States to play up such cyber threat from China.""Maybe the only reasonable explanation is that the United States has always been on the alert for China's development," Ni said. "The U.S. government needs this kind of rhetoric as an excuse to scale up its cyberwarfare capabilities and win support from Congress, the media and the public at large.""If the United States continues such behavior, looking for topics to attack China, the mistrust between the two countries will only get worse," he added.

CHONGQING, July 19 (Xinhua) -- Rain-triggered landslides in southwest China Monday blocked a river, creating a barrier lake in Chongqing Municipality and forcing the evacuation of more than 12,000 people, flood control authorities said.The landslide blocked the Luojiang River in Chengkou County early Monday, creating a dam holding 15 to 20 million cubic meters of water, said Xing Hua, a Chengkou Water Resources Bureau spokesman.As of 5 a.m. Monday, the barrier lake was five-square-kilometers in area and 18-meters deep, said Xing.Photo taken on July 19, 2010 shows the Ciqikou Town surrounded by flood water of the Jialingjiang River, southwest China's Chongqing Municipality. ZURICH, Switzerland, July 18 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo and Doris Leuthard, president of the Swiss Confederation, held talks on Sunday and agreed to expand their bilateral cooperation.Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), delivered Chinese President Hu Jintao's regards to Leuthard. BEIJING, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) - China's Ministry of Agriculture Friday urged local authorities in flood-hit regions to step up efforts to resume agricultural production and create favorable conditions for the autumn harvest following this summer's severe floods.Local departments were ordered to accelerate water drainage, restore damaged infrastructures, strengthen field management, and plant mung bean, potatoes and buckwheat, which have short growth periods, to make up for losses, according to an official from the ministry.The official also required departments to clear away and carry out bio-safety disposal of dead livestock, while increasing epidemic control measures.As of July 21, more than 7 million hectares of farmland in China had been destroyed by torrential rains and floods, according to data from the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters.

BEIJING, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- Beijing launched a one-month household registration survey on Sunday in preparation for the once-a-decade census of China, the world's most populous country, which begins in November.A total of 100,000 uniformed census takers will go door-to-door in Beijing from Aug. 15 to Sept. 15, along with policemen, to check each household's current residential information, said a spokesman with the sixth national population census' Beijing office.Foreigners and residents of Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan will also be surveyed for the first time, except those on short-term business or sightseeing trips, according to a census regulation jointly issued by the State Council and the National Bureau of Statistics in May."This is because the upcoming national census seeks to survey 'every natural person' in China and Chinese citizens who live abroad but have not obtained long-term living permits," said Su Hui, director of the office.The survey aims to count the total number of Beijing residents and to correct false household registration information and provide accurate information for the sixth national census, he said.Experts say that many households do not unregister their deceased family members so they might continue collecting social insurance funds from the government. Also, some children born in violation of the country's "one child" policy were also not registered.All information collected in this survey will be kept confidential, and will not be used for other purposes, Su added.Since the founding of the People's Republic in 1949, China has conducted national population censuses in 1953,1964,1982,1990 and 2000.The last census, a decade ago, set China's population at 1.29533 billion people.
