With Georgia playing a key role in this year’s presidential election, Democrats in the state are reminding voters to check the status of their ballot before a 5 p.m. Friday deadline.Voters in Georgia have until then to “cure” their ballot as the state has a rule that allows people who have their ballot rejected for administrative reasons, such as forgetting a signature, to fix their ballot. Nevada gives voters seven days to correct a signature discrepancy. Arizona gives voters five days to make a correction.Pennsylvania is a state that does not have a process for ballot curing. According to WPVI-TV, some counties allowed voters to cure their ballot, prompting a lawsuit from Republicans. According to WPVI, nearly 1,600 voters in Bucks County had their ballot rejected, many for not properly placing their ballot inside of the “secrecy envelope," as voters in Pennsylvania are required to place their ballot inside an unmarked envelope, which is placed inside a marked envelope.In most states that permit ballot curing, elections officials are to notify voters of the discrepancy immediately. But with thousands of ballots being counted, there are questions on whether election officials are able to reach all voters.Stacey Abrams, a prominent Georgia Democrat who had an unsuccessful bid for governor in 2018, launched a website “CheckMyBallot.net” which allows voters in key battleground states to check the status of their mail-in or provisional ballot.What voters aren’t able to do through vote curing is change their vote. 2040

The health agency issued their “framework for resuming safe and responsible cruise ship” operations Friday, ahead of the no-sail order expiring Saturday.The no-sail order, which originally began in April, prohibits cruise ships from carrying 250 passengers in waters subject to US jurisdiction.The CDC said it has identified at least 3,689 coronavirus-related illnesses, and 41 associated deaths, connected to cruise ships. Although the CDC cautions these figures are likely an underestimate.The framework urges a phased approach, and applies to ships that have the capacity to carry at least 250 passengers in waters subject to U.S. jurisdiction.“A phased approach is necessary because of the continued spread of the COVID-19 pandemic worldwide, risk of resurgence in countries that have suppressed transmission, ongoing concerns related to restarting of cruising internationally, and need for additional time for the cruise industry to test the effectiveness of measures to control potential COVID-19 transmission on board cruise ships with passengers without burdening public health,” a statement from the CDC reads.During the beginning, cruise line operators will have to demonstrate adherence to testing, quarantine and isolation plans, as well as social distancing requirements for passengers and crew members.The CDC says they will help by “establishing a laboratory team dedicated to cruise ships to provide information and oversight of COVID-19 testing,” updating instructions and creating a system to track ship status and passenger cases.Meanwhile, cruise lines will need to build out the capacity and ability to test crew and passengers on a regular basis.In their framework, the CDC says there may be simulated, or mock, voyages with volunteers to test cruise ship operators’ ability to apply COVID-19 mitigation measures.Although the no-sail order will be lifted, Carnival, Royal Caribbean and other cruise lines have already cancelled sailings until 2021. 2083

Although this might sound like a strange way of voting, the process allows for “instant runoffs.” Election officials continually eliminate the last-place candidate until there are only two candidates left or a candidate receives a majority of the vote.For instance, if your first choice is eliminated, your second choice becomes your vote until that candidate is eliminated or is declared the winner.On Tuesday, the Maine Supreme Judicial Court ruled against a GOP-led initiative that attempted to delay the use of ranked choice voting in the presidential election. The court struck down a lower-court ruling.The process had already been used in the primary and the 2018 midterm. Governor Paul LePage protested the results from the 2018 election, and threatened not to certify the results. In Maine’s House District 2, Democrat Jared Golden won the election despite not receiving a plurality of first-choice votes. Golden ended up garnering a majority after two independent candidates were eliminated.Maine is also unique as it is only one of two US states that divvy up Electoral College votes based on congressional districts. When I think of Kim the one word that comes to mind is joy,” said Wukovits. It's still painful for Wukovits to talk about her only daughter. Kimberly Coffey was a high school senior who was in her last two weeks of school. She'd been accepted to nursing school and was ready to launch her career. She wanted to follow in her mom's footsteps and be a nurse. One day she came home from school with a fever.“By the next morning she wasn’t fine at all. She said 'mommy everything hurts from my eyelashes to my toes.' This is really, really bad. She couldn’t pull her head off the pillow and was completely lethargic,” Wukovits recounted. Kimberly told her mom that it felt like her ankles were bleeding. Patti saw purple dots and rushed her daughter to the emergency room. “One of the doctors pulled me aside and said 'we believe your daughter had bacterial meningitis.' I said 'That’s not possible. I made sure Kim was vaccinated with the meningitis vaccine.'”She learned that Kim wasn't fully protected. "At the time, in 2012, when she got sick we didn’t have a Meningitis B vaccine in the United States so I couldn’t protect her with that. It does not have to happen any longer, we have a vaccine and it should not be happening. We shouldn’t lose one more child. But again, if parents don’t know about it we might not know to ask about it,” Wukovits said.Even in the COVID-19 era, Wukovits is doing webinars, educating everyone about the two separate vaccines, and empowering parents and families to have the conversation before they head back to school this fall. “I know we’re making a difference I know that. Kimberly’s dream was to be a pediatric nurse and save children’s lives and this is not how she or I planned she would save children’s lives but she still is and through me.
