SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In celebration of Dr. Seuss's birthday, and as part of "America Reads," the United Way of San Diego is holding a week-long book drive across San Diego County."Reading to children is the utmost important thing a parent can do," says United Way CEO Nancy Sasaki.The United Way will accept book donations at their office, and also at any SDCCU branch location across the county. They're also teaming up with Warwick's Book Store in La Jolla for donations.The need is most significant among low-income families. The United Way says 61% of low-income families in San Diego don't have any books in their homes for kids. That puts them at a significant disadvantage."If a kid is not at a 3rd-grade reading level by the end of third grade, we know they're four times more likely not to graduate high school on time," says Sasaki. "And if they come from low-income communities, they're six times more likely to fall behind."Studies show that reading to children as few as three times each week helps promote vocabulary and reading proficiency."In many family settings where the parents are working 2 or 3 jobs, and they're crossing paths in the night, and they're barely able to get the food on the table, reading is not so easy to do," Sasaki says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Local officials say a record number of San Diegans died of meth last year.According to the county's 2020 Meth Report Card, 546 San Diegans died from meth in 2019, 63 more than the previous record of 483 set in 2018.The County Medical Examiner's Office says people most impacted by meth are those 45 years of age or older, which represented 319 of the meth-related deaths. The ME says people in this age range tend to have chronic cardiovascular disease, which may have been from long-term meth use."There’s no sugarcoating it: Meth is destroying lives and families at a record pace here in San Diego County," said County Supervisor Dianne Jacob. "Local law enforcement and treatment services are on the front lines battling this scourge, but clearly we need to do even more as a region."While San Diego was once considered the "Meth Capital of the World," little is made locally today and most of it is being transported into the county from Mexico, according to the report. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Legoland debuted a new land for youngsters as well as a train attraction for park guests Thursday.Park officials welcomed in the addition of Duplo Playtown and a new mini-locomotive in a ribbon cutting with families from Ronald McDonald House Charities. A special check presentation of ,000 was also made to Ronald McDonald House. The park says the new Duplo Playtown will give guests the best views of Miniland U.S.A. from high atop the theme park. The land is geared for kids five and under and features ten interactive areas with sounds and games to entertain.The new mini-locomotive, the Legoland Express, was also unveiled.
