SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A beloved gorilla has died at the San Francisco Zoo & Gardens. The zoo says Zura, a 39-year-old Western lowland gorilla, was being treated for “long-term digestive issues” but her condition recently had worsened and she died Friday.Zura arrived in San Francisco in 1982 from the Columbus Zoo, where her grandmother was Colo. Colo, who died in 2017, was widely known as the first gorilla in the world to be born in captivity. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - For 250,000 San Diego County students, school is not just access to education, it is access to food.“We know that for many many of our students, the stable meal they can rely on each day is that breakfast and lunch they can normally get at school,” said SDUSD Trustee Richard Barrera.There are food distribution sites across the county where families can pick up meals for kids while school is not in session. These services will continue through the summer. While thousands are taking advantage of the food distribution sites, not everyone can physically get to the locations, so there is a new state resource to combat that.Pandemic EBT, or P-EBT, is available to students who are eligible for free or reduced price meals at school. Families can apply and get 5 per child on a card that can be used like a debit card at grocery stores or online. The money stays on the card for a year. That number was chosen based on an estimate of how much it would cost to feed a child through the summer.With about a million households applying in the first week, Anahid Brakke with the San Diego Hunger Coalition said there has been a delay with signing up, so anyone interested needs to have patience during the application process. She said it's currently taking about three weeks to process and warned that phone lines are currently backed up, adding that it could take until the end of July to process everyone.“If you apply, if you leave a voicemail, if you send an email, they are making their way through all of that. They’re hiring new staff at the state, they’re extremely committed to making sure everybody who is eligible get their card,” said Brakke.Families need to apply by June 30. If there is more than one child in a family, all of the money will come on one card and the oldest child’s name will be on the card.Barrera mentioned some of the feedback so far has been caution from families who are worried about sharing their information.“Some of our families have called us and said is this some sort of scam? Is somebody trying to get my information? No. Take advantage of this program. It’s meant to support you and your kids,” said Barrera.He said SDUSD is communicating this information through robocalls, so families should not be surprised if they get a voicemail with this information.Leaders also encouraged everyone to apply because families could be eligible if a parent recently lost a job or took a pay cut.According to a release, P-EBT was authorized under the Families First Coronavirus Response Act of 2020 which allows for states to apply to the USDA to run a P-EBT program to meet children’s nutritional needs. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Thursday San Diego city leaders announced the city will be joining AARP’s network of age-friendly communities.This means elected officials have made a commitment to prepare for San Diego’s aging population with policies that will focus on AARP’s “8 Domains of Livability” which include communication, civic participation, housing and transportation.At a press conference in front of San Diego City Hall, Councilmember Chris Ward said the city is committed to building a “sustainable and inclusive city where San Diegans of all ages and abilities can have long, active, and productive lives.”San Diego now joins Chula Vista, La Mesa, and the County of San Diego in becoming an age-friendly community.“San Diego’s membership in the AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities and our local partnership with The San Diego Foundation are essential to helping residents live easily and comfortably in their homes and communities as they age,” said Ward.“This is just the beginning, the hard work begins, the implementation part of it is where it’s at,” said Joe Garbanzos with AARP California. “It’s good to see that the city recognized that this is good framework to use to help advance livable communities in the area.”Kevin Mayor Faulconer was not present at the news conference, but wrote the following statement.“Here in San Diego we’re focused on building more affordable housing, increasing mobility choices, and creating livable communities to improve the quality of life for all San Diegans, including older adults,” said Faulconer. “We also recognize the importance of preparing for San Diego’s aging population with policies that enhance healthy aging, civic participation, and social inclusion. San Diego State University on Thursday detailed a 0 million plan to avoid the massive flooding that has engulfed the Mission Valley Stadium site, which it plans to turn into a West Campus. The current stadium sits on a 166-acre site that is largely sloped, causing runoff from the nearby San Diego River and Murphy Canyon Creek to pool. In 2010, the flooding got so bad that it went onto the field and threatened the Holiday Bowl football game. Voters in November approved the SDSU West measure, paving the way for the university to turn the site into a Mission Valley campus with a smaller football stadium and a river park. The project is currently going through the environmental process. "It started out as a technical problem and it became kind of a foundation of our design and our vision," said Laura Shinn, SDSU's director of planning. SDSU presented its plan to mitigate the flooding to the city's environmental committee Thursday. The idea is to turn most of the sloping site into an elevated, flat area for the campus and stadium. Then, it would build parts of the river park on a slope along the edge, giving the water a place to go. 1156

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- People living on the streets are worried that the new portable restrooms installed by the city will get shut down because of those using them for illegal activity.  The city installed four portable bathrooms on First and C Street near City Hall. Four hand washing stations were also installed.On Monday, people using the restrooms were thankful and said the restrooms were long overdue. One man, a Navy veteran, told 10News he's used the restroom twice since they were installed. On one of those trips, he found a used needle. He worries drug users will force the city to shut the bathrooms down. The area has 24-hour security. Security guards work in 12- hour shifts. One guard told 10News he warns people that they can't stay in the bathroom for too long. The city plans on installing other portable restrooms at different locations in the coming weeks.
