BEIJING Jan. 10 (Xinhuanet) -- Scientists have found a plant in Brazil using leaves to capture the tiny worms in the soil, according to Monday's Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in the U.S.The plant, named Philcoxia, was found in the tropical grassland of Brazil, where the biodiversity is well conserved. As the scientists searching for the answer of why the plant grows the leaves underground, they found the 1.5 millimeters-wide leaves can trap the worms and produce a digestive enzyme to help its roots to absorb the nutrition.Although it is not the first meat-eating plant to be discovered, the finding has still "broaden up our perception about plants," according to researcher Rafael Silva Oliveira, a plant ecologist at the State University of Campinas in Brazil. It suggests that carnivorous plants "may have evolved independently more times in plants than previously thought," he added

BEIJING, Sept. 30 (Xinhuanet) -- Miners, construction workers and people in hotel and food service industry are most likely to smoke in the U.S., according to new research finding. The finding was contained in a report released Thursday by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).According to the finding, miners and people in hotel and food service have a cigarette smoking rate of 30 percent, followed closely by construction workers' 29.7 percent. Both rates are much higher than the average smoking rate of 19.6 percent among all U.S. working adults.Workers in the education services industry have the lowest smoking rate, with 9.7 percent, followed by the 10.9 percent of workers in company management, the report said.Low education levels are a factor in high smoking rates, along with poverty and gender, said Ann Malarcher, senior scientific adviser at the CDC."Although some progress has been made in reducing smoking prevalence among working adults," the report wrote, "additional effective employer interventions need to be implemented."Smoking kills an estimated 443,000 each year in the U.S., costing about 193 billion U.S. dollars annually in direct health care expenses and productivity loss.
HONG KONG, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- Computer and electronic device maker Lenovo, listed in both Hong Kong and New York, has replaced Dell to become the world's second largest personal computer company, Lenovo said Thursday.Lenovo made the remarks in a statement, citing figures released by International Data Corporation (IDC), a global provider of business intelligence for the consumer technology market.Following five quarters as the fastest-growing PC maker among the world's top vendors, the preliminary IDC data reported that Lenovo has achieved record market share of around 13.7 percent and record quarterly shipment volume of some 12.6 million units.Lenovo CEO Yang Yuanqing said his company had surpassed two competitors to capture the No. 2 spot in worldwide PCs in just two quarters and it was the highest rank that Lenovo has achieved in worldwide PC sales.Given current competitive environment, the new achievement positioned Lenovo as a strong challenger to ultimately become the global market leader, Yang said in the statement."We are growing in the enterprise and the consumer space. It serves customers in more than 160 countries and regions.
JIUQUAN, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- China will launch the spacecraft Shenzhou-8 in early November at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest deseart area. The unmanned spacecraft is expected to perform China's first space docking with Tiangong-1, or Heavenly Palace-1, a space lab module that was launched in September from the same launch center. The spacecraft and its carrier rocket, an upgraded Long March-2F, were transferred on Wednesday morning on a 20-meter-wide railway to the launch pad.The launch pad is 1,500 meters away from the assembling and testing center. It took nearly two hours to complete the transfer.Technicians completed testing on the assembling of Shenzhou-8 and the rocket after they were delivered to the launch center at the end of August, said Lu Jinrong, the launch center's chief engineer. In the next few days, the launch center will continue testing the spacecraft and the rocket, and inject propellent before the final launch in early November, Lu said. The assembling, testing and transferring of the spacecraft and rocket were all conducted while they were vertical.Shenzhou-8 is capable of docking with the spacecraft Tiangong-1 in both manual and automatic modes. The Tiangong-1 space lab module is functioning smoothly in the orbit, and all equipment and experiments are going well, according to Lu. The module is ready for the docking task, Lu said.
