LONDON (AP) — St. Bernards are known for helping to rescue distressed travelers in the mountains, but on Sunday the tables were turned in northern England. Sixteen volunteers from the Wasdale mountain rescue team took turn carrying Daisy, a 121-pound (55 kilogram) St Bernard, from England’s highest peak, Scafell Pike. The mountain rescue team spent nearly five hours rescuing Daisy, who had collapsed while descending the mountain on Friday evening. Rescue workers say she was displaying signs of pain in her rear legs and was refusing to move. They administered some pain relief, adjusted their stretcher to be more dog-friendly and packed a few treats to help settle her down. Daisy is now recovering from her ordeal. With their sense of direction and resistance to cold, St. Bernards have been saving people in the mountains since the 18th century, according to the Smithsonian Magazine. 899

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A ballot measure restoring the right to vote for felons on parole has been decisively passed by California voters.Proposition 17, which nearly 60 percent of voters had approved, will change the state Constitution to allow an estimated 50,000 felons on parole to vote.Supporters said the parolees have paid their debt to society and should be able to shape the policies that affect their lives.Opponents said restoring rights early to felons is a slap in the face to their victims. 507

LOS ANGELES (AP) — California State Parks officials are trying to solve a stinky mystery: A die-off has left hundreds of fish floating in a recently restored lagoon on the tony Malibu coast.California State Parks Angeles District Superintendent Craig Sap says Monday scientists believe the Malibu Lagoon die-off, which began last Wednesday, is very likely caused by the unusually warm water temperatures. But other possibilities include elevated nutrient levels, dropping levels of dissolved oxygen or having too many fish in the lagoon.Officials are taking water samples and fish for testing.Malibu Lagoon underwent a controversial restoration project in 2013.Sap says officials improved the ecosystem by providing better oxygen levels and the number of fish in the lagoon has since increased. 801
