SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are searching for a suspect they say tried to kidnap a 13-year-old girl on her way home from school.According to police, the victim was walking home on the 700 block of Picador Boulevard near Montgomery Middle School in Otay Mesa West when she noticed she was being followed by a black van. The van pulled up next to the girl and opened the door when the man inside asked the 13-year-old if she wanted a ride home. The suspect then grabbed the victim by the wrist and tried to pull her into the van before she was able to escape and run home.A witness driving by saw the 13-year-old talking with the suspect and made a U-turn before seeing the victim run away. The suspect is described as a white male between 50-60-years-old with glasses, a full beard and a raspy voice. Police say the van had a “J” or a “K” in the plate. 870

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One of San Diego's most popular taco stops plans to expand across the county.City Tacos, which started in 2014 in North Park and added a La Mesa location in 2017, is preparing to open in four more locations around San Diego County. The shop is heading to Imperial Beach, Encinitas, Pacific Beach, and the Sorrento Valley area, according to City Tacos owner Gerald Torres."We've been expanding as rapidly as we can while being responsible," Torres said, noting when he used to open a store, he did so, "quietly and let people trickle in and take care of them."RELATED: List: San Diego's best Mexican restaurantsThe opening of the Imperial Beach location, however, will see a bit of a different welcoming. Free tacos will be given to the first 200 customers during its opening. In IB, the location will partner with local craft brewery Mike Hess to feature a 6,500-square-foot taco shop and beer garden just steps from the beach on Ocean Lane. Customers can expect many of the delicious taco creations found at other City Tacos locations, with the added benefit of pairing them with Mike Hess brews. To open, the IB stop will also offer tacos from local IB Street Tacos, including the carnitas, pollo asado and cameron enchilada tacos. Eventually, breakfast items will also be added, like chilaquiles and benedicts, and tostadas.RELATED: 10 must-eat restaurants on San Diego's Convoy StreetIn Encinitas, the location will feature a wrap-around patio spanning nearly 2,000-square-feet, giving diners plenty of room to eat and hang out.Torres says the Imperial Beach location will hold a grand opening after the property's gas is turned on, but mobile service is currently serving customers. Encinitas is set to open in two to three weeks, while the Pacific Beach location is about three months out.Sorrento Valley's stop is at least a year away, Torres added. 1882

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Oak Valley Middle School 7th Grader, Madhumita Narayan, says she spends up to 2 hours per day practicing for the upcoming County-Wide Spelling Bee.Her secret? Google."I just search for hard spelling word lists and try to memorize a bunch of words," she says.Words like "translucent," which she spelled correctly to win the school bee earlier this year.RELATED: Scripps National Spelling Bee regional challenge held at Liberty StationNow, she'll compete against dozens of other students from around the county for a chance to go to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington DC.Narayan admits she's nervous."I'll probably get even more nervous than I already am. A lot of them probably do study more than I do," she says.RELATED: Test your spelling skillsHer Humanities teacher disagrees. Dusty Posey has run the bee at Oak Valley for 4 years. She says Narayan is one of the best the school has sent to the county bee."She was very calm and collected," says Posey. "The biggest key is to go slowly and not worry about time and just think about it, spell it out in your head and visualize it. You can tell she was doing that. And she seemed to be very confident up there."Narayan says her love of spelling came from a childhood spent reading and writing. She won her first bee in 4th grade.RELATED: John Oliver is a spelling bee superfan"I really enjoy learning new words and their definitions and how to spell them," she says. "When I'm reading any books, I try and go through the words I don't know, and learn their spellings and definitions and their origins." 1628

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - One month after a scooter accident nearly killed his wife, a Chula Vista man says she's pulling through. Dean Riggott says he watched as his wife Karen fell off a Bird scooter, her head crashing into the pavement. "She hit the back of her head with such force and ferocity, that scooter threw her with such force, that she only hit the back of her head, and broke the bones all the way around the side of her face to the front of her eyes, above her eyes," said Dean.Doctors told Dean to expect the worse, that she would likely not survive the head trauma."I cry literally every morning, every morning."But Dean says his wife is a force of nature and is now defying the odds."She can open her eyes, and she can even smile if you let her know you're in the room, and you're here for her."Karen has some movement in her arms and legs but still cannot support herself. "Unfortunately the families who's lives have been damaged by these scooters, it's going to be a reminder and a remainder in their life for a long, long time," said Dean. While Dean's focus is on his wife's recovery, he can't help but warn others about the dangers of scooters."It's pretty simple. When people are dying, something is wrong."He's reached out to all nine city council members asking for help; so far only three have responded to his pleas for action against scooter companies. Until there are stricter scooter regulations, Dean hopes Karen's story will remind people to think twice about riding them. 1507

She's living with cerebal palsy which has kept her in a wheelchair. But, it's not holding her back. "When people look at me. It's been really hard, but I overcome that. You can do anything, I tell people you can do anything in the world," said Solis.Solid has worked in the security field and wants to move onto bigger opportunities so she decided to attend this job fair.Charlene Autolino is the chair of San Diego Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities, which put the fair together. She said the event gives many more than just a job, but motivation to strive for more."Imagine being told for years that you can't do anything because of this disability, or you aren't capable of able which is not true," said Autolino. The organizer of this event will also be hosting a similar job fair specifically for veterans in November. 1031
