ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from rain-triggered mudslides in Zhouqu County of northwest China's Gansu Province has risen to 337, with 1,148 others still missing, Chen Jianhua, official sources said Monday night.Another 1,242 people were rescued, Chen, Party chief of Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, which administers the county, said at a press conference.Chen said 218 injured survivors had received treatment in local hospitals, and 41 severely injured ones had been transferred to hospitals in the provincial capital, Lanzhou, as of 4:30 p.m.

KABUL, July 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi on Tuesday called for continued support of the international community to the war-torn Afghanistan."We want to see a peaceful, stable and independent Afghanistan that enjoys development and good neighborhood," Yang said addressing one-day international conference on Afghanistan in the Afghan capital Kabul."We should respect Afghanistan's sovereignty, and work together for the realization of Afghanistan run by the Afghans," he stressed.To achieve the goal, he proposed four points including ensuring security, political reconciliation, speeding up economic reconstruction and enhancing international cooperation."We call on international community to channel more assistance to infrastructure and other projects that will bring immediate benefit to ordinary Afghans," Yang said.He added that it is important to enhance coordination between regional and international cooperation so that they will complement and reinforce each other.The international community, he said, should remain committed to bringing durable peace and stability to Afghanistan. LUOYANG, July 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao has stressed economic restructuring, agricultural production and the role of grass-root party organizations during his visit to the city of Luoyang in central Henan province.Hu visited state-owned enterprises, research institutes and talked with local farmers during this trip from Friday through Sunday.At Citic Heavy Industries Co., Ltd., the largest manufacturer of mining machinery in China, Hu learned that the company had shifted focus from manufacturing to research and development. He said innovation is the lifeblood of a company.He also visited a tractor manufacturing plant and a bearing producing company, both enjoying rapid growth thanks to restructuring. Hu asked officials at the two companies to continue with their restructuring and their ongoing expansion through innovation.Hu also visited two research institutes.
