(KGTV) — Pacific Beach restaurants are open for dine-in service for the first time since the pandemic started."People look happy, people are just happy they don't have to cook for themselves right now, they have some place to go where someone can cook for them," Mavericks Event Manager Krista Marcheschi said.Mavericks is a popular destination for drinks and dancing weekend nights, but since the pandemic Marcheschi said they are adhering to the strict guidelines set by the county.RELATED: Encinitas lifeguards out in full force for Memorial DayMarcheschi said they closed on March 15th and reopened last week for take out. They have a no-touch menu option, using a QR Code, or one use menu. There are signs on tables showing when it has been sanitized. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— Two Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School alumni were in San Diego for a book tour Sunday evening. Sofie Whitney and Brendan Duff shared details of the most horrific moments of their lives — the 2018 Parkland School Shooting. They were two of several authors who wrote the New York Times Best Seller, "Glimmer of Hope."The event was part of a special talk series called "Community Divided: Humanity United," hosted by the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center. "We may have different faiths or cultures. We may have different political perspectives. At the heart of it all of it we are human," CEO of the Lauren Family Jewish Community Center, Betzy Lynch said. "Valuing that human life and value in that, and other human beings is more important than any difference amongst any of us."Valentines Day 2018 was supposed to be a celebration of love. But for Sofie Whitney, it was anything but love."Awful. Like it was my worst nightmare... it was everyone's worst nightmare," Whitney said. At the time, Whitney was a senior at Stonemason Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. She was in drama class when a gunman committed the worst school shooting in the history of the country. Seventeen students and staff lost their lives. "It was unfair that so many people had experienced such a loss, and so many people experienced such trauma, and that it wasn't abnormal," Whitney said. It was not abnormal then. And not abnormal now. Mass shootings, unfortunately, are still a part of the American story. "We just need to collectively remind ourselves that this is a uniquely American problem, so we need to address this as Americans. Not as one side of the political spectrum or the other," Brendan Duff said. Duff had graduated from Stonemason Douglas High School the year prior. He heard about the tragedy from his younger brother, who survived the shooting. The Communication student at Elon University immediately flew home, and became the spokesperson for what later became the "March for Our Lives.""It's our crazy, messed up minds somehow led to this incredible movement forming from just a bunch of kids," Whitney said. Months following the tragedy, survivors did countless interviews. They started the "March for Our Lives" -- the campaign to fight against gun violence. They spoke to every publication, every station, and anyone who would listen. They did not stop until the media attention suddenly faded. The next stage was their book, "Glimmer of Hope.""With the book, we had a lot more time to streamline our process, and figure out what we wanted to include and how we wanted to tell our story," Duff said. He and Whitney collaborated on the chapter titled "Becoming a Team." In it, they wrote stories about survivors and victims. Duff wore several bracelets on his arms, each of them honoring the fallen. ?"We take little parts of these people with us," Duff said. "It doesn't just stop when the tragedy is over. It doesn't just stop when the trigger is pulled. This is something that we take with us, and so we take them with us physically too."Audience members were moved by the young adults' presentations. 72-year-old Lynne Jett from Vista went home with a signed copy of the New York Times Best Seller. "We can't let this happen anymore. We can't let our children sacrifice. That's why I am here," Jett said in tears. "If they are willing to stand, I am certainly willing to listen. SAN DIEGO - A hot air balloon with 14 passengers and a pilot on board made an unplanned landing in Rancho Pe?asquitos Sunday night.The balloon set down on a hillside at Pe?asquitos Drive and Del Diablo Way west of Interstate 15 about 7:15 p.m.The community jumped in to help, keeping the basket stable and helping the passengers exit safely, according to the San Diego Police Department.Witnesses helped the pilot bring the basket down to the street where it could be picked up by the owner, police said. The owner's name was not released.No one was injured.The NTSB will investigate the cause of the unplanned landing.  643

SAN DIEGO COUNTY (KGTV)-- New SANDAG and San Diego County statistics show an alarming number of San Diegans of color are impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. Wednesday, community leaders and elected officials announced the creation of a new regional task force to tackle the root causes of the inequities.The coronavirus did not create society's inequities."But it has definitely exasperated them, and it has highlighted them," San Diego County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said.That is why community leaders announced the creation of the new Regional COVID-19 Task Force for Equitable Recovery. They will work with elected officials to tackle the underlying problems that lead to inequities such as job, food, healthcare, and economic losses, felt by many San Diegans of color."You are valued," National City mayor, Alejandra Sotelo Solis, said in the Zoom announcement. "You have made a contribution to our community, and we want you to stay healthy.""The elected officials will then shoulder the obligation to take their recommendations and suggestions and translate them into policies that can be introduced for a vote to make the change real," Fletcher added.A newly released SANDAG report found that when compared to the white population, Black and Hispanic people are more than four times more likely to live in areas that have been impacted both by COVID-19 and unemployment.New San Diego County numbers show that while Hispanics and Latinos make up 34% of the county population, they account for 67% of the county's positive coronavirus cases."Not one community needs the testing, tracing, and treatment," JoAnn Fields with API initiative said. "But it needs to be on an equal level so that we are all protected as a whole community."The task force hopes to close the understanding, trust, access, and resource gap felt by people of color, in a proactive way. SAN DiEGO (KGTV) - Police deployed tasers to arrest a man following a road rage outburst that got out of control Wednesday evening.Police identified the man as 33-year-old Jason Berard. He was driving a silver SUV that backed into a white pickup truck near Park Boulevard and Howard Avenue in the University Heights neighborhood.  According to the driver of the pickup, they pulled over into a Chevron. The driver of the pickup truck thought they were going to exchange insurance information, but instead, Berard was confrontational.  According to witnesses, Berard punched the other driver before ripping away the man’s cell phone and throwing it on the ground, smashing it.A gas station employee called the police.  After police responded and made contact, police say Berard assaulted an officer. That’s when another officer came to help and fell to the ground during the struggle.Police say Berard took off on foot and got about a block down Howard Avenue but was taken down after an officer using their taser.Berard could be facing battery charges on an officer as well as resisting arrest. 1122
