NANJING, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- Police authorities in China's eastern Jiangsu Province on Sunday intensified their search for the suspect in an armed robbery in the province.Police have increased patrol and initiated a blanket search for the male suspect, who shot and robbed a man in front of a bank in Nanjing, the provincial capital, on Friday, the provincial public security bureau said in a statement. In Nanjing, special armed police and police cars have blocked major roads, with many others searching in public places. Two helicopters are used to facilitate the search. The provincial police authorities also offered a reward of 100,000 yuan (15,850 U.S. dollars) for information leading to the arrest of the man believed to be in his 40s.The suspect shot a man who had just finished withdrawing 200,000 yuan in front of a bank on Nanjing's Dongmen Street at 9:50 a.m. Friday. The robber then took the money and hopped in a car that sped away from the scene of the crime, Pei Jun, deputy chief of the Nanjing public security bureau, said Friday.Pei said the suspect is believed to have used a gun to kill six people and injure another two in six robberies that took place in Changsha, capital of Hunan Province, and Chongqing municipality since 2004.Firearm possession is illegal in China.

NAIROBI, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- The UN refugee agency said on Tuesday there has been an outbreak of cholera in Dadaab, the world's largest refugee camp in Kenya, which is believed to have started among new arrivals who had most likely acquired it in Somalia or en route to the camp. The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said the situation in Dadaab, home to Somalis fleeing famine and conflict, is being exacerbated by heavy rains and accompanying risks of waterborne diseases."Rains and flooding had affected the trucking of water to parts of the camps, and we fear some refugees resorted to using unsafe water from flooded areas," the UN refugee agency said in a statement released in Nairobi.According to UNHCR, there are now 60 cases in the camps, including 10 laboratory-confirmed cases and one refugee death. To manage the outbreak, UNHCR and partners have set up cholera treatment centres for severe cases, it said. The UN agency deplored insecurity which it said continues to affect aid efforts more than a month after the kidnapping of three aid workers in Kenya's Dadaab refugee complex. The UNHCR says insecurity is still hampering aid efforts in the area, despite the deployment of 100 Kenyan policemen in the last month.UNHCR is assisting them with vehicles, shelter and telecommunications equipment."Together with our partners, we are exploring options to gradually resume full operations despite continued security incidents in and around Dadaab. In the meantime, refugees are still receiving life-saving aid, namely food, water and health care," it said.According to the agency, most cases can be managed through oral rehydration solutions (ORS) that can be given at home or at the health posts."We are working with UNICEF and the Ministry of Health to train health workers in the community-based management of diarrhoea so that patients can begin treatment at home," it said.UNHCR said it has increased levels of chlorine, which kills cholera-causing bacteria, at water points in the camps. These, it said, are monitored to make sure they are maintained at the correct levels."We are also promoting hygiene practices among the refugees, especially the use of latrines and hand washing with soap. Each refugee received 250 grams of soap with the latest food distribution and this will continue monthly for several months," UNHCR said.Dadaab is home to more than 400,000 registered refugees, nearly all of them Somali, with an estimated 70,000 people having arrived in July and August as conditions in their homeland rapidly deteriorated.

BEIJING, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government will donate one million U.S. dollars to quake-hit Turkey, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu announced Friday.Jiang said that China has paid great attention to the situation since a 7.2-magnitude earthquake hit eastern Turkey on Sunday.Jiang noted that Premier Wen Jiabao sent a message of condolence to Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan immediately after the quake. The Red Cross Society of China has also donated 50,000 U.S. dollars, and China will continue to offer emergency relief aid to Turkey, she added.According to the Turkish government, as of Friday morning, 570 people were dead and 2,250 injured after the powerful earthquake struck the province of Van in eastern Turkey on Sunday.

BEIJING, Sept. 30 (Xinhuanet) -- The number of children being prescribed stimulants to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been steadily rising in the U.S. since 1996, researchers found. The finding was contained in a report released Wednesday in the U.S. medical journal Psychiatry.About 7.8 percent of children aged 4 to 17 in 2003 were diagnosed with ADHD, compared to 9.5 percent in 2007, according to the data gathered from the Health Resources and Services Administration's National Survey of Children's Health. And compared to 0.6 percent in 1987, 2.9 percent of children under 19 in 2002 have been prescribed stimulants, the report said. The finding raises the researchers' concern as stimulants have side effects such as decreased appetite, leeplessness and even heart-related damage, the report warned."Stimulant medications work well to control ADHD symptoms, but they are only one method of treatment for the condition. Experts estimate that about 60 percent of children with ADHD are treated with medication." says researcher Benedetto Vitiello, MD, of the U.S. National Institute of Mental Health."There is ongoing concern that these drugs may not be used properly, especially when they are prescribed to college students or children in their late adolescence who are more in charge of their care and may not be using the medications as prescribed." he added.

BAGHDAD, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- Iraqi President Jalal Talabani told the newly-arrived Chinese ambassador Tuesday that Iraq is willing to expand cooperation and strengthen ties with China.Talabani made the statement when receiving the credential from Ni Jian, China's new ambassador to Iraq, in his presidential palace. The friendship between Iraq and China can be traced back to more than a millennium ago and endured the test of time, Talabani said. The recent years have seen increasing cooperation and exchanges between the two countries in multiple fields, bearing positive results and breakthroughs, he said.Ni Jian said that China attaches great importance to the Chinese-Iraqi relations and is willing to broaden friendly ties with Iraq on the basis of equality and mutual benefit.
