SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- A 76-year-old woman who died on May 24 is the first local fatality of e-cigarette or vaping-associated lung injury, the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency announced Thursday.Three vaping-associated lung injuries in young adults were confirmed in recent weeks and are the first reports of the lung illness in San Diego County since 2019.All the newly reported local cases tested negative for the novel coronavirus, which causes COVID-19, and all reported recently vaping products containing THC.The California Department of Public Health recently recognized new reports of confirmed lung-injury cases in persons vaping THC-containing products in April, after no cases had been reported since February.Since July 2019, a total of 52 EVALI cases have been reported in San Diego County residents. All patients had to be hospitalized."While our community is understandably focused on COVID-19, it is important to remember that lung injury from vaping is still a major public health concern," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, county public health officer. "People who vape, especially those using THC-containing products, are urged to stop."In January, the San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted to restrict the sale of flavored smoking products and e-cigarette and vaping devices in the county's unincorporated areas. SAN DIEGO — Three teenagers were taken into custody in three separate attempts to smuggle fentanyl across the U.S.-Mexico border, according to federal officials.U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said the incidents occurred on March 30 and 31 at the San Ysidro Port of Entry near San Diego, California.On Friday, CBP agents stopped a 17-year-old Mexican citizen. After noticing an "anomaly" on the teen's back, agents conducted a pat down and found two packages strapped to his back. The packages contained four pounds of fentanyl — a street value of 1,000.The next day, CBP agents stopped two more male teens within 10 minutes of each other: a 17-year-old and a 15-year-old. Both were found to have packages of fentanyl strapped to their backs. The two combined were carrying about nine pounds of drugs, a street value of more than 6,000.The teens in each case were arrested and turned over to Homeland Security Investigations. Eric Van Vleet, who was arrested in Idaho's Cassia County less than a week after the alleged Nov. 1 attack and extradited to San Diego, faces up to three years in prison if convicted. Deputy District Attorney Will Hopkins said the unnamed officer was breaking up a fight amid a crowd of people outside the Atomic bar about 1 a.m. when Van Vleet allegedly yelled, ``(Expletive) the police'' and punched the lawman in the side of the head.
