SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Councilwoman Barbara Bry Wednesday increased her lead for second place for the third straight day over Councilman Scott Sherman in the San Diego mayoral primary election.The two candidates with the most votes will head to the general election in November, so depending on the final vote count, San Diego voters look likely to be choosing between Assemblyman Todd Gloria and Bry.Should Gloria and Bry face off, it would guarantee San Diego its first Democrat mayor since Bob Filner resigned in 2013 and just the second Democrat elected to the nonpartisan position -- several Democrats served as interim mayors in 2005 and 2013 -- since Maureen O'Connor stepped down in 1992.Gloria, a former San Diego city councilman and interim mayor, has a more than 64,000-vote lead over both Bry and Sherman and is virtually assured to make it onto the November general election ballot.Bry currently has a 444-vote lead over Sherman, a Republican.With a projected 25,000 ballots left to be counted, and with Sherman's election-night lead of more than 3,000 votes in the rear-view, November is looking all but assured to be a showdown between the two Democrats. 1172
SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A motorcyclist died Sunday in a head-on collision with a truck in the San Pasqual neighborhood, police said.The accident happened at 1:41 p.m. when a 65-year-old man riding a 2020 Harley Davidson motorcycle traveling east in the 18000 block of San Pasqual Valley Road crossed over the double yellow line and hit a 1997 Ford 250 driven by an 88-year-old man traveling west, according to Officer John Buttle of the San Diego Police Department.The motorcyclist died and the driver of the Ford and his passenger were taken to the hospital.Traffic Division is investigating the collision. 609
SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A suspect was detained by police Saturday in Thursday's fatal stabbing of a man in a Midway District strip mall.The stabbing was reported at around 8 a.m. Thanksgiving Day in the 3100 block of Sports Arena Boulevard, according to San Diego Police. The unidentified 55-year-old victim was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to SDPD Lt. Matt Dobbs.At around 10 a.m. Saturday, police spotted a man matching the description of the suspect in the 4200 block of Cosoy Way, near Presidio Park.RELATED: Man stabbed to death in Midway District shopping centerPolice detained the man for further questioning, according to Officer Tony Martinez.Dobbs said the victim and suspect had "an altercation" outside a business, leading to the suspect stabbing the victim in the neck with an unknown weapon.The suspect was described as a white male between 20 and 40 years of age. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man accused of ambushing a janitorial worker at a Little Italy coffee shop and trying to sexually assault her pleaded not guilty Wednesday to a half-dozen felony charges, including kidnapping with the intent to commit a sex offense.Christopher Merron, 28, was ordered held on million bail. He faces life in prison if convicted, said Deputy District Attorney Nicole Roth.Merron allegedly attacked the woman as she was cleaning the coffee shop in the 1700 block of India Street about 4:30 a.m. last Sunday, pushing her into a back room, taking her car keys and threatening her with a knife.Following a struggle, the victim, whose name was withheld, was able to break free and run out of the building, said San Diego police Lt. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Four men allegedly bringing several dozen pounds of drugs through the coastal North County were arrested today following a road chase from Solana Beach to Carlsbad, authorities said.The pursuit began about 10:30 a.m., when detectives tried to pull over a vehicle with five people in it on Interstate 5 near Lomas Santa Fe Drive, according to sheriff's officials.The driver refused to yield, continuing on to the north for about four miles before exiting onto Encinitas Boulevard, Sgt. Bill Kerr said.There, one of the passengers, 24-year-old Gabriel Albert Delosreyes, got out of the vehicle and allegedly made a futile attempt to escape on foot.As deputies chased down Delosreyes, the fleeing driver -- later identified as Juan Manuel Villalobos, 28 -- got back onto I-5 and went north for several more miles, then exited at La Costa Avenue and headed east along the southern shoreline of Batiquitos Lagoon, Kerr said.Reaching a residential area off Levante Street and Caminito Monarca, just east of El Camino Real, Villalobos pulled over, jumped out of the vehicle and ran off with his remaining companions.One of the four, an unidentified woman, managed to escape, but deputies quickly captured Villalobos along with cohorts Marcos Martinez, 34, and 26-year-old Eddie Anthony Navarro.Inside the trunk of the car Villalobos had been driving, deputies found a truck tire with 25 1/2 pounds of methamphetamine stashed inside it, according to Kerr."Small amounts of other drugs were also found on the suspects,'' the sergeant said.The arrestees were expected to face various criminal charges, including possession of an illicit narcotic for sale, illegal transportation of a controlled substance and conspiracy. 1736
