As Tropical Storm Laura began setting its sights on Puerto Rico, and eventually, the Florida coast, Tropical Storm Marco formed late Friday.Marco has top winds of 40 MPH, but is expected to gain strength by the time it reaches the Gulf of Mexico. As of late Friday, however, the storm is not forecast to reach hurricane strength.The storm is then expected to head for the Texas or Louisiana coast.In the meantime, Marco is expected to hit Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula this weekend.Tropical Storm Laura is also headed toward the Gulf of Mexico, but instead of approaching from the South like Marco, Laura is coming from the east.Laura has top winds of 45 MPH as of late Friday. Before reaching the Gulf of Mexico, it is expected to skirt Puerto Rico and Hispaniola and Florida.The combination of Marco and Laura could cause havoc for emergency managers next week. As part of his push to get schools reopened in the fall, he is calling on Congress to approve 5 billion in funding to help with additional costs associated with the coronavirus pandemic.“This funding will support mitigation measures such as smaller class sizes, more teachers and teacher aides, repurposes spaces to practice social distancing, and crucially mask wearing,” Trump said.Trump is also taking a different tact to compelling schools to reopen. Previously, Trump threatened to pull federal funds from schools that did not reopen. Many of those funds are through the Title 1 program, which are directed toward poorer and disadvantaged schools.Rather than pulling federal funds from schools that opt for virtual learning, Trump said that the supplemental funds would go with the students. Under his proposal, students could use federal funds for other in-person learning options, or for homeschooling.“If schools do not reopen, the funding should go to parents to send their child to public/private, charter, religious or home school of their choice, the keyword being choice,” Trump said. “If the school is closed, the money should follow the student so the parents and families are in control of their own decisions. So, we would like the money to go to the parents of the student. At least 226 people have died following a 7.1-magnitude earthquake that hit Mexico Tuesday, according to a tweet from Luis Felipe Puente, National Coordinator of Civil Protection of the Ministry of the Interior. Authorities asked for the public's help Wednesday in identifying a woman who allegedly broke into an Irvine home and went into a resident's bedroom before being chased out by a resident.Surveillance video captured the woman ringing the doorbell of a residence on Jan. 18 at 8:34 p.m., Irvine, California police said.The homeowner — who did not want her name made public — said when nobody came to the door, the intruder made her way into the house via a side door and then into the upstairs bedroom where the homeowner's college-age daughter was sleeping.The daughter woke up and asked the intruder who she was, the family said. The trespasser managed to flee after the daughter chased her out of the house, according to the mother.After reviewing surveillance footage, the family said they discovered that the intruder had also come to the home in December. It's unclear whether she was able to enter the house at that time.The family said they did not know the woman, who was described by police as Asian with brown hair, brown eyes and of average height.
