SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Father Joe's Villages announced Wednesday it is hiring more than 100 "compassionate, mission-driven individuals to join its team and help end homelessness in San Diego one life at a time," as need for the nonprofit's services swells during the pandemic.The homeless services provider offers housing for more than 2,100 people in San Diego every day, and those services have expanded further to meet an increased need during the COVID-19 pandemic.Open positions include residential, security and health care, among others."During a time where so many are left jobless, these positions at Father Joe's Villages are not only exciting career opportunities, they contribute to our organization's mission to prevent and end homelessness," said Deacon Jim Vargas, president and CEO at Father Joe's Villages. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - County health officials announced Thursday that flu activity remained steady over the last week but confirmed flu cases are still three times what they were at this time last year.The county's Health and Human Services Agency confirmed only 36 flu cases over the last week, bringing the county's 2019-2020 flu season case total to 335. The county had confirmed 109 cases at this time last year.Only two residents have died due to flu complications since the county's flu season started July 1. At this time last flu season, the county had not recorded a flu death.County health officials expect flu cases to spike as the year approaches the holiday season and gets deeper into autumn and winter."The holiday season is right around the corner," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. "With family and work gatherings coming up and people taking part in holiday activities, now is the time to get your flu shot to make sure you avoid getting sick and spreading the virus to others."County health officials and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention strongly advise the annual flu vaccination for everyone 6 months and older, especially in demographics with a heightened risk of serious complications like pregnant women, people with chronic medical conditions like lung disease and people age 65 or older.Residents can take precaution against contracting the virus by frequently washing their hands, cleaning commonly touched surfaces and avoiding contact with sick people. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities Friday publicly identified a 20-year-old man who was found dead of an apparent homicide in a car parked on a Southcrest- area roadside.Patrol officers responding to a report of a possible traffic accident in the 4000 block of Boston Avenue around 11:50 a.m. Wednesday found Ismail Abouabid mortally wounded behind the wheel of the parked vehicle, bleeding from the head, according to San Diego police.Abouabid, who had recently relocated to San Diego from Erie, Pennsylvania, was pronounced dead at the scene, Lt. Matt Dobbs said. Police initially reported that the man apparently had been shot to death but later backed off from those statements.RELATED: Police investigating after man found dead in car in Southcrest``It is very early in the investigation, and little is known about the events leading to (his) death,'' Dobbs said. ``The mechanism for the man's injury is not being released at this time.''Witnesses told investigators three male teenagers had been with the victim shortly before his death.``The group of teenagers walked away towards a nearby park just before the victim was discovered with the injury,'' the lieutenant said. 1182

Thursday's normally scheduled collection will occur on Friday, and Friday's collection will occur on Saturday. Residents in other cities should check with their waste hauler for holiday service schedules.The Miramar Landfill will be closed Thursday.Torrey Pines, Mission Bay and Balboa Park golf courses will be open until 3 p.m. Holiday rates will apply. All San Diego skate parks will be open.All public buildings in Balboa Park will be closed, including the Balboa Park Activity Center, Botanical Building, Casa del Prado, Municipal Gym and War Memorial Building. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Four local restaurants and gyms are suing the state and county over its coronavirus restrictions as a shutdown of indoor operations looms for many county businesses.The lawsuit was filed Thursday in San Diego Superior Court on behalf of Cowboy Star Restaurant and Butcher Shop, Home & Away Encinitas, Fit Athletic Club and Bear Republic.The suit comes as San Diego County is slated to shut down indoor operations for nonessential businesses at midnight due to its recent entry into the most restrictive, purple tier of the state's coronavirus reopening plan.The businesses allege that San Diego's increased case numbers are not a result of exposures at restaurants, gyms and other types of businesses that will be impacted by the impending closures. The lawsuit cites recent figures indicating restaurants/bars, retail businesses, places of worship, schools and gyms make up a small percentage of confirmed community outbreaks.San Diego County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten recently submitted an adjudication request to the state seeking to have San Diego County remain in the red tier. The request was rejected by the state last week."Penalizing the impacted sectors for case increases is wrong, as these sectors continue to do the right things, while trying to weather the ongoing pandemic and the back forth of reopenings," Wooten's request states.The businesses allege in their complaint that they may be forced to shut down permanently if the shutdown is not averted.
