Dog's aren't just our best friends, they're also good for our health, new research suggests.A study published Friday in the journal Mayo Clinic Proceedings says that owning a pet, especially a dog, may help maintain a healthy heart -- in case you needed any more reason to head to your local animal shelter.The study began in 2013 and 2014, when researchers gathered health and socioeconomic information on over 2,000 people in Brno, Czech Republic, and scheduled follow-up evaluations for every five years until 2030.The latest was this year, in 2019, when researchers again looked at about 2,000 people with no history of heart disease. They scored the participants on the American Heart Association's list of seven ideal health behaviors and factors, also known as "Life's Simple 7": body mass index, diet, physical activity, smoking status, blood pressure, blood glucose and total cholesterol.The researchers compared the cardiovascular health scores of pet owners with those of petless people. In general, people who owned a pet were more physically active than those who did not, with healthier diets and blood sugar levels.But then they compared dog owners with everyone else and found that no matter their age, sex or education level, they benefited the most in terms of cardiovascular health.Take that, cat people.The findings are consistent with research that has shown that dog ownership leads to more physical activity. Meanwhile, pet ownership in general reduces stress, betters our self-esteem and makes us more social.Francisco Lopez-Jimenez, one of the lead researchers on the team, said what makes this study so significant is that it showed the benefits of having a dog go beyond just increased physical activity. DENVER — Three unvaccinated children who are visiting Colorado from another state tested positive for measles after traveling to a country with an ongoing measles outbreak, according to a Tri-County Health Department news release on Monday.The children flew into Denver International Airport with their family Wednesday. DIA officials said people who were in concourse A, on the train to the terminal, the west baggage claim or at the west passenger pick up area on that day between 1:15 p.m. and 5:45 p.m. may have been exposed. However, DIA said there is no ongoing risk of exposure. The exposure risk in other areas of the city is unknown at this time. Health officials said they are working to identify people who may have been exposed to the highly contagious infectious viral disease.The three patients are currently being treated at Children’s Hospital in Aurora, according to the health department.More cases of measles have occurred in the US during 2019 than any year since 1992, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. She was only following what her parents taught her when she saved her 6-year-old brother from the clutches of a possible kidnapper.Julianne said that a man tried to grab her brother in the early evening hours May 23 while they were playing in the front yard of the their Cleveland home. Julianne said the man grabbed her brother's arm, and she managed to her pull her brother away from him.“He grabbed him like this, so I just grabbed him and started carrying him into the backyard,” Julianne said. The 11-year-old girl immediately alerted her father, Joshua Moore, who ran down the street and confronted the suspect."He was about five houses down, and I said, 'Hey, did you touch my kids?' He just threw his arms at me and just continued walking,” Moore said. "My daughter and I gave a full description to police, and just 10 minutes later they had him in custody. They did a great job."Police arrested 33-year-old Pedro Luyando of Cleveland half a mile from the scene. He is charged with abduction.Moore said he taught his children to use the buddy system when playing in the front yard and is proud of how his daughter took action.“She’s my hero.
