With over 160 vaccines in development, the race to defeat COVID-19 continues.A California company hopes to deliver its vaccine to your mailbox; one that is pain-free and doesn't require a needle and syringe."One of the things I wanted to do was make vaccines more patient-friendly, so they don't hurt and you're not afraid to take them," said Dr. Dan Henderson, a virologist and the CEO of Verndari, Inc.The biopharmaceutical company is based in Napa, California. Dr. Henderson originally came to the wine country to retire but stepped back into the lab during the Ebola crisis. He says some adults avoid vaccines because of a fear of needles, so Verndari set out to do something different. They created the VaxiPatch, a single-dose vaccination kit that uses a dermal patch with a metal microneedle array to deliver vaccines. Once applied, the person wears the patch like a Band-Aid for five minutes. The vaccine uses the COVID-19 "spike" protein that enables the virus to infect human cells and works to enhance a person's immune person.Unlike traditional vaccines, the patch doesn't need to be refrigerated, which Henderson says would make it easier and cheaper to send to developing countries. The company initially set out to make a flu vaccine but switched gears during the pandemic; they continue to adapt to the world's changing needs. "Now, for the First World, it's a shelter-in-place vaccine," said Henderson. They're working with the FDA to see if it could be mailed to your home. The vaccine would leave a temporary blue mark so the patient could take a photo and send it to their health care provider as proof of vaccination. In collaboration with the UC Davis, they've begun clinical trials in animals. Dr. Henderson says so far the results are promising.Other researchers are also working on getting a patch like this on people's arms.Scientists at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center have created a fingertip-sized skin patch that is also showing promising results in animal testing. Verndari hopes to test its vaccine in humans in the fall, and if all goes well, it could be made available to the public early next year. Dr. Henderson believes they could manufacture about 20 million doses a month. "It would mean a lot because it's important to me to make a contribution and a contribution like that, to me, is priceless." 2408

on their walk to school.Terri Johnson is a substitute crossing guard for Tooele City. This week as the weather has cooled down, she noticed some of the kids walking to school without coats. That’s when she came up with a simple idea to help out.“They’re going to school wrapped in blankets and that’s not enough,” Johnson said. This week she decided to do something about it. She posted on Facebook, asking people to donate coats for the kids.“It was just an idea to post it there and see what would happen; it has just been phenomenal,” Johnson said. She’s already seeing some response from the community, getting several small trash bags full of coats. She said there’s still more kids who need help, and she’s hoping the community will come together for not only the kids in Tooele, but those in other cities too.“I can’t do it by myself, but if you had something in your closet that your kids not wearing anymore, why not help somebody out?" Johnson said.Anyone interested in donating to the cause should 1006

and is warning others to keep them from falling for the same scam.Paula, a Florida resident, said she lost more than ,000 after calling an Amazon customer service number she found on a Google search. But the person on the other end of the line turned out to be an imposter and didn’t work for Amazon at all.Paula said the imposter helped her get back into her Amazon account but also told her she needed to verify her identity by going through the steps to purchase ,000 in Amazon gift cards. She suspects the imposter hacked her account to access the gift cards.“Nothing is getting charged to your account this is for verification on our side,” Paula said the imposter told her.WFTS called the same number as Paula. The man who answered would not say where he was located or give the name of his business. An Amazon spokesman said in an email, “We monitor for suspicious activity, including gift card activity, and work with law enforcement and consumer protection agencies to investigate and take action on bad actors… A member of our team has reached out to the customer to get additional information.”Paula said she understands her money is long gone but hopes by sharing her story others won’t make the same costly mistake.Experts say you can avoid falling for one of these scams by always using a company’s official website to find a customer service number — and avoid searching for contact information on Google and other search engines. This story was originally published by 1488

issued by Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Officials from the Tucson Sector of Customs and Border Patrol, along with members of Mexico's Federal Police, were conducting a "cooperative bi-national tunnel sweep" when they found the incomplete tunnel on May 29. "The tunnel’s entry point was found several meters below street level inside a legitimate cross-border storm drain that runs into the U.S. from Mexico," CBP's press release reads. 445
