A Pinckney, Mich. woman is recovering after she was bitten by a rattlesnake while walking in her yard.Laura Bowen says she was cleaning out her garage, carrying some rakes down a walkway between her home and garage. That's when she says she didn't see the rattlesnake on the ground in front of a garage door, but almost immediately felt a burning pain in her leg when it bit her."It was like a bee sting times 10," Bowen said of the bite. "It was instant fry." Bowen is slowly recovering from the incident, which happened noon on Aug. 20."Just kept telling myself don’t over react because it’s just probably a garden snake or something," she said. "I took a couple shutter steps and looked back and it was a huge snake."The bite happened so fast, and the excruciating pain was almost instant."It was like acid, burn, pain," Bowen said.She says she took a picture of the snake after the bite. Emergency responders immediately recognized it as an Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake."That was the best thing that I did was to take that photo so they could identify it and know what they were treating," she said.Bowen spent four days in the hospital and received 10 vials of anti-venom. She still plays that day in her head over and over again, and is thankful everything is going to be ok."I think I’m going to buy some garden boots, the rubber ones that are clunky," Bowen said. "Definitely re-thinking my garden attire."She's currently using a cane to help her get around, and should be able to walk on her own again within a week.Bowen has two more doctors appointments just to make sure everything is healing well. 1700

A special guide dog has reinvigorated Anastasia Pagonis' zest for life and her swimming career.After a devastating diagnosis and the loss of her sight, it was Radar that helped pick her back up.Pagonis started losing her vision when she was 14 years old. Her parents signed her up for swimming and she excelled, but when she lost her sight completely, she didn't want to get back in the pool at all.Things changed once Anastasia received a guide dog from Puppies with a Purpose."Radar is my guide dog. He is honestly the best thing that has happened to me. I'm so happy to have him in my life." Radar has also given Anastasia the confidence to get back in the pool "When I got back in the water and just, like, felt the chlorine on my skin, I knew that this is what I wanted to do. I knew that I was going to do anything I could possibly do to get me where I wanted to be. And that's Tokyo 2021." A student at Island Park High School in Florida was suspended after the principal and other staff members saw him imitating a gun with his hands and pretending to shoot in a classroom.This happened Friday. "You shouldn't be doing something like that at all," former Island Park High School student Devan Hinton said."It's just not something to be taken lightly," Sam Sherman, who lives in Fort Myers, told Scripps station WFTX in Fort Myers, Florida.The principal called the Lee County Sheriff's Office to file an incident report after he saw the student "imitating a rifle with his hands and pointing it to the classroom."Another staff member described the student making "a gesture with his arm simulating as if he was firing a weapon into the classroom."A third staff member said the student "stood in the classroom doorway and made a machine gun style pose with his arms pretending to shoot at the classroom.""That isn't OK. With everything going on, that's not something to joke about. That's lives in someone's hands," Hinton said.The principal said he didn't think the student was serious but will not tolerate this behavior in school, so he suspended him.It's an action Sherman said he agrees with for the safety of the students."It's better to be preventative than wait and let it go on, and God forbid something else occur," he said.The principal of Island Park High School, Arthur Nauss, sent WFTX this statement:"I took the disciplinary action of sending the student home after I observed him pointing his finger at another student imitating that he was shooting a gun. The student pointing the finger and the student he was pointing at know each one another and were laughing at one another. There was no threat being issued but I believe it necessary to make it clear to the student, and all our students, that this is unacceptable behavior considering the recent events here in Florida. I called the student’s mother to inform her of what had occurred and let her know I would be working with the student in the future to ensure this behavior does not reoccur.When the student returns to school he will be informed that any future actions such as this one will result in a suspension or expulsion from school. A rent-control style bill that would cap annual rent increases is advancing in Sacramento.The bill, by Democrat Assemblyman David Chiu, would limit annual rent increases to 5 percent plus inflation. Currently, market landlords in San Diego County can raise the rent as much as they want at the end of a lease. Adam Moody, of Pacific Beach, just saw his rent go up by 0 a month, or 10 percent. "We're thinking about moving somewhere because if it's going to keep increasing, we'd rather maybe get a house or something," said Moody, who lives with his wife. The bill, AB 1482, made it out of the Assembly Appropriations Committee Wednesday. It will now advance to the full assembly floor before moving to the state senate side. With inflation, the cap in San Diego County would be 7.2 percent, which is nearly three times faster than wage growth. Molly Kirkland, public affairs director for the Southern California Rental Housing Association, said the organization opposes the bill. She said legislation like this turns off developers from building more much-needed housing, and can lead to the current supply going unrepaired. "The five percent plus CPI (inflation) may be enough if you don't have significant operational costs, if you don't need a new roof, but that's not a certainty," she said.Moody says he supports the cap. He says there must be a happy medium for landlords to be profitable, while allowing renters to keep affording where they live. Gov. Gavin Newsom has not indicated whether he would sign the bill.
